Call of Duty 5: Modern Warfare 2 may have lead to the untimely demise of my 360

since i wasn't going to sit around with mw2 sitting on my table, i went out and bought a new elite. im going to call m$ and get my old 360 fixed, but in the mean time, i am really enjoying how much quieter this elite is. the black also blends in well with the rest of black gear in my ht setup. guess ill have an extra box :(

Now I am just flat out suspecting y'all are killing yall's falcon and 90nm 360s to convince your significant other to get an elite.

lol not likely bro! i just got married, so for me, another purchase was really not necessary. I was happy with my halo 3 xbox, it had hdmi, and last year i upgraded to a 60gb drive, so all was good. i really think m$ purposely fucked up consoles. no reason for a perfectly good machine to just go bad like that.

Are you 100 percent sure it had good venting (And by that I mean it on TOP of everything not stuck deep inside a cabinet)

I highly doubt it wasnt bad cooling rather than MW2

i have always kept my xbox out on top of my media cabinet, standing up, and with perfect ventilation. absolutely no reason why it would go bad all of a sudden.

Some people must not read the threads they post in. I dont get all of the PC recommendations and talk. I understand that a PC is a better game platform. I have a nice PC, but having a PC that can play Fallout3, COD:MW2 or Borderlands at or above the level an Xbox 360 can costs more than $400. In addition, my friends all have the Xbox.

I'd say its inferior to consoles now...look at the new releases...most are ports from consoles..so why should I pay say 1000-1500 on a PC when a $200 Xbox Arcade or $300 PS3 can do the same thing and the game is optimized for it, vs a PC that has alot of variables to it (Video card type, CPU speed, memory etc) that may or may not work right.

Another thing to is that its getting harder and harder to find PC games via retail stores. Steam is alright, they have good deals on it (Got ARMA2 and L4D for $25 bucks), but I see some PC snob gamers on here complaining about it...I guess there is no pleasing everyone.

The PC gaming market has gotten so bad that my dad wants an Xbox360, since there isn't anything really coming out for the PC. I remember when there was 2-3 good releases for the PC each quarter and now your lucky to get that every YEAR.

I had a release Xbox360 crap out on me after a year and then its replacement crapped out again last summer. I got an Arcade to replace it and its been running strong and I pulled 3PM to 1AM gaming marathon playing MW2 mulitplayer this past Saturday with out any issues.

Extremely doubtful. MS is losing money on every console sold and they make the money with the games and gadgets that go for it.

I just dont understand the urge to spend more money instead of fitting the HD and parts from the old Xbox to an arcade xbox which will work exactly the same.

I remember the same thing happening when Halo3 came out. Most likely the extra stress from MW2 just accelerated an issue that was already present. My elite red ringed and I got a Jasper and it barely gets warm after playing hours of MW2- makes a huge difference. I would not hesitate buying a 360 now.

So the lesson here people! Get a jasper unit! And remember that if you buy the arcade unit you can use the stuff from your old 360 on the new including HD at 199 USD its far cheaper than buying a brand new elite.

You know MS really ought to have demanded 65nm to start. It would have saved them quite alot of funds.

Edit: Jasper units are best identified by the power plug as in this image http://www.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/xbox_360_jasper_psu_2.jpg if you are silly enough to attempt to buy a used 360. Make sure it looks like that.

yes, i argued that same point with myself at the store as I made up my mind about which unit to purchase. In the end it came down to having an all new theatre setup in a new apt and a white box would stick out horribly, while the black box fits in perfectly, as though it belongs there. so for another 100 bucks, i figured, i might as well try to make the damn thing blend in better so as not to attract the wifeys attention.

Had the exact same thing happen to me. Two days after getting MW2 screen goes green/blue and switches off after a couple minutes. This is on a launch 360 that has been sent in for repair once. Said stuff it, bought a Jasper Elite, love how quiet it is. Plus I now have HDMI for added neatness.

Felt the great urge to fix the old one today, so ripped it apart, removed the x-clamps and dremeled the old heatsinks to accomodate bolts to hold them down instead. Working perfectly 8 hours straight of playing MW2

Anyway, the new Elite is miles quieter/cooler running and now I have a nice lan setup for when mates come over.

Congrats tho at 90nm dont expect that old 360 to handle 10 hours of Lan play :p and the power bill will also hate you :p

Haha so true :p I expect the lights to dim when I power it up.

In my opinion MS ought to have demanded 65nm for the 360. Yes it would have delayed them close to a year but it would have prevented the plethora of RRODs that resulted in lots of loss.

They need to demand atleast 32nm on the next box. 22nm would be better

the new models fail too. .. . . I played my first xbox for 3 months then it broke.. now for the last 4 months I've been sending one in, they send me a new one, I recieve it, I plug it in, its broken, I send it back. . . 4 months without an xbox i've gone now because every new one they send me is broken. . . i receive my 5th xbox in about a week.

This time don't play it in a pile of clothes it has to have good ventilation so put it on top not shoved in a case.

I'm sure you've all seen my thread, but I think I'll post here to about a MW2 failure.

Played CoD4 to get warmed up for about a week prior, no issues whatsoever. Get MW2, in 2 days the console no longer works with stock cooling.

Have you been using the same hard drive in each one of these XBOXs? If you have, the hard drive might be the thing causing the problem.

Holy Sh*t!!!! I fixed my old elite today!!!. All it took was the following:

(8) M5 x 10mm bolts - fine threaded
(8) M5 Spring washers
(8) M5 Flat washers
(16) M5 Nylon washers

I replaced the xclamp on the processor as well as the gpu otherwise I would have need only half of the hardware I used.

I have no idea how long the repaired unit will last but for now Im stoked to have two working systems.

Glad the elite is working but I wish my first attempt at fixing the system would have worked. Its nice to have two systems now but I'd rather have the cash.

You have a jasper unit that wont burn out by just looking at it wrong now. Tis worth it

Funny thing- since I posted in this thread I had 2 friend's Xbox 360 red ring. One was an Elite from fall 2007 and another was a pro from spring 2008. Both of these guys been playing mw2 like crazy. I doubt it was the game, just the prolonged stress and heat from the long gaming sessions. Both of them went out and bought Jasper Arcades too and are going to try to sell the repaired xboxs after they get them back from Microsoft.

The same was said of Gears of War. My two 360's to failed after playing COD4 and GOW for one month 8hrs per day. When I got a Jasper 360, it didn't fail after playing GOW2. So there's definitely a problem with systems made before Jasper.

With the amount of banned Xboxes hitting the market they are not likely to get very good prices for their units. And there will be a great deal of suspicions.

8 hours PER DAY? Yikes man, how is that even possible?

Very cool! My friend did this. He bought 2 used ones from Ebay @ $40 each, with the RRoD. He fixed them using the xclamp thing from ihacked.com/360fix, and now has 3 360's for Lan's and stuff.

I'm going to have to agree that MW2 is taxing on some older systems. Prior to getting and playing MW2 I was playing Halo ODST and NFS: Shift just as much as I was MW2. Few days into MW2 my 360 Pro system would start freezing until I finally got the RROD and of course it just so happened to start 8 days after my system fell out of the 3 year warranty. After seeing that MS was going to charge me $100 for the repair I called them up, complained about the charge and they waived the fee.

Either way I already have an Elite holiday bundle on the way. Dell had it on sale for a few days for $270 and since I was planning on getting another one I went ahead and snagged it up.
