Title says it all. Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I figured it was OS related more than anything.

Also, after voting, post your average uptime if you so desire. Obviously server machines can have an INSANE uptime, so let's try to keep this to your everyday machine. And no, rebooting does not count.

Personally, I usually keep mine shut off when not in use (I use a MacBook Pro). But the longest I've had mine on is about a week (which I know is practically nothing compared to some of you).

Depends which computer. Most of my computers I have running 24x7x365. Even my laptop.

I have many which have not been fully powered off for over a year or two. Reboots now and then for Windows Updates...I suppose once a month...my primary gaming system probably goes several months without a reboot.

Laptop usually stays running for months without a reboot, just gets the lid shut when done..hibernation...Windows 7 does very well.

I leave mine on 24/7 but it's been off for the past 3 days due to the power being out from the storm that came through the atlantic. Power may be back on tonight at 10pm hopefully.

Web/Email Server, 2U PIII Coppermine - about...3 years+

Laptop is about 3 weeks.

Yeah for servers that'll push the count up.

BUT...are you counting reboots (as in for Microsoft Updates or Antivirus Program updates) as no more uptime? Or are reboots allowed?

I thought reboots were considered turning it off, in which case I voted 1 week to 1 month. But if they didnt, It would be 1 to 5 months.

Yah, I considered a reboot as turning it off. Either way I have to turn it off at least monthly to clean out the cat hair in the air filters.

This. ^^^

My desktop runs 24x7 for probably 345 days a year. I turn it off if I'm gone for more then 3 days due to power. ;)

Best uptime is probably 4-5 months but generally I reboot at least once or twice a month for Windows Update and possibly a Catalyst driver update.

Like a lot of people here my computer is on 24/7/365. My main rig that I use everyday has seen 1.5 months at the longest without a reboot. I had a really old computer running as web server/file server for my own personal use for somewhere around 6 months without a reboot. It was a power failure that took it down.

my computer is on 24x7 :)... except for restarts, its been on since I built it a few years ago

^ This. I leave mine up all month, unless some stupid software I install needs a reboot (fewer and fewer of these, these days), until patch tuesday.

I don't get it. If I left my computer on 24-7 it would add at least $50 to the electricity bill. Does sleep mode count?

Wow I should have added a "2 years to 5 years" option instead. :p

The results of this poll are disgusting. Anyone who leaves their pc on for more than 48 hours is a lazy ++++. Your carbon footprints must be huge. I turn my pc on sleep mode whenever i leave the room and turn it off at the wall when i leave the house or goto sleep.
and its not because i care about the power bill, its just pure laziness and inconsideration that stops people from doing as i do. Seriously how hard is it? And its not like a pc takes more than 10 seconds to come out of sleep mode or more than 2 minutes to boot up.

Almost 24/7 for 9 years running Win98SE. Except for the typical power failures and hardware cleaning of the dust bunnies, it's been a good Packard Bell machine on the network.

It depends on what you consider "leaving the computer on". Except for moving and power outages I haven't really turned off systems for 12-14 years. Of course, that's not a single system, but multiple systems one after another.

For a single system my longest uptime is around 6-7 months. That's no reboots, power outages or anything else.

My main system might get rebooted once a month or so and that's usually due to updates only. My fileserver might get rebooted every couple of months and my third system usually gets a reboot every couple of months as well.

Your insistence that your opinion is the only correct one is disgusting. Some of us don't give a damn about your opinion on how we use our systems and don't appreciate you trying to shove your opinions down our throats with insults. You also have no clue what some people have their systems on for which makes your rant even more disgusting. Maybe you should stop and think before writing out your rant.

My two servers (or one when I only had one) are always on 24/7/365 unless I have it down when I'm building a new one, restarting for an update or something, or troubleshooting it (rarely). Those have uptimes of a 2 - 6 months frequently.

My main machine is always on 24/7/365 with an uptime of 2+ months. Generally not longer than 3 though.

I left this Inspiron 1150 on everyday without a reboot for at least 7 months. I had it running to an external monitor so I'd just turn the monitor off but never the computer. Thing was built like a tank and weighed about the same.

Yeah, you should clarify if reboots count. If not, around 2 years with a Vaio notebook running Windows XP, torrenting linux isos 24/7.

I turn my computer off all the time but it is almost always for a reason. My 4850's work best if they are dusted out at least once a month. I also go to LAN parties frequently which of course requires you to turn off your box. I also reboot my computer at least once a month when the new Catalyst drivers come out.

Wow for a second I thought I was still in GenMay and entered the SoapBox.
What about the members of this forum that fold on their rigs when not in use? Are they also pieces of shit scum that deserve to die?

I leave my systems running 24/7/365. Only time the system goes down is once a month for a reboot, bc of updates. My computers are never "cold".

I've done a little over 260 days once. I just put my ShuttleSN25P AMDx2 @ Low Power/clock and turned the screen off. Used to run folding this way to keep heat and fan noise down. Didn't do any updates other than AV so no restarts.

+1. I fold on my rig 20 hours a day, the other 4 are for gaming.
I voted 1 week- 1 month. Ususally i reboot about once every 2 weeks.

One Win2k desktop system for 2+ years, multiple XP systems for 1+ years.

I leave systems on because they're running services which have to remain available, to download larger files during the night which I'll need the next day, for Folding@Home. As my company is international there really is no 'off time', so there rarely is a good time to take down a system except for the crash boxes.

You need to check your tree hugger attitude at the door and while your at it stop shoving your opinion down everybody elses throat.

You have no idea what our computers are doing and why the hell do you even care? I don't give a shit what you do with your computer or what anybody else does with theirs.

Whether I run my computer 24x7x365 or has no bearing on your life. I constantly run VM's in order to further my own knowledge so that I can get ahead in this world to support myself and my wife (who wants me to fatten up a little because she thinks I've gotten too skinny) and our future family.

I use remote access all the time to check up n my VM's to see if what I was doing worked or broke something. Sleeping Active Directory in a VM doesn't always work right in my experience either.

I've never managed to keep Win98 happy for more than ~3-4 weeks. After that long (with daily usage) it's started behaving oddly: icons getting messed up, the disk trashing, and eventually I had to reboot to get things back to a sensible state.

Win2k was actually worse. It would BSOD on weekends at least once a month. I remember saving all my open documents before the weekend "just in case". Amazingly it only BSODed on weekends, but thinking back I played games on weekends so it was probably related to that.

Now I leave the comp on 24/7 but I have no idea of my uptimes. Powerouts and reboot patches probably keep me to the 1-5 month bracket.

Last time i checked 1. It is his electric bill. 2. The amount of flamage in your post was worse for the earth than him leaving his pc on. 3. Why do you care? It doesn't effect you

My normal uptime is 1-2 months (restart to apply updates). My PC is turned off only because of power failure and maintenance.

A couple of servers have finally hit the 365+ uptime mark (and then rebooted for a kernel update, lol) but for the most part, my PCs usually get a reboot every few days.

Get over yourself.

Gotta lend some support to Karndog... I know more than a few people that just keep their personal systems on all the time just sitting there doing absolutely nothing... Now obviously for those with a real need to keep their systems on, I have no problem with that... But for so many others there really is n reason at all....

And the real ignorance in this thread comes from those that think someone else's carbon footprint doesn't affect the rest of us....

I shut both of mine down every night, and most of the time during the day if I'll be gone more than an hour or two. No need to waste the electricity.

I think i've done 60 days. If it wasn't for windows updates and whatnot I'd have a much longer uptime.
