Why can't I get into mass effect?

Another thing that helps is if you are really into that sort of sci-fi...me, I can't wait (literally, because I'll be dead by the time it happens) till we discover Lightspeed travel and (if it is possible) FTL travel.

So the story was particularly engaging for me because it was like exploring a possible future.

My advice if you get dragged down, ...stick to the main story, main plot. Avoid subplots, hard to do if you are a completionist. But once you find yourself getting into the story (which gets better and better towards the end) you'll find the subplots /sidemissions will be more interesting to do.

Also, CHEAT and add one of the skills you get for doing a certain skill a bunch of times... personally I love THROW even though it is not the most bang-for-buck skill...but lots of fun and makes you feel like a jedi

I believe it was Einstein that said it is possible to travel slower or faster, but not at the same speed as light....I'll have to double check on that.

As far as skills go, max level lift was by FAR the most overpowered thing ever. You could literally just float an entire room of enemies and blast them out of the sky one by one. It was followed closely by the one that placed a rift in the air that sucked everything within range to it.

This game would have been a lot better 3rd person isometric or zoomed out like Baldur's Gate/NWN...

Or otherwise an FPS would have been awesome as well.

I think this sums up the thread pretty well - everyone who didn't enjoy ME either wanted a pure RPG or a FPS. The fact that it was a combination of those things just makes peoples heads explode, apparently.

It's impossible to travel at or above the speed of light (at least as physics is understood today).

It would require infinite energy and would make you infinitly massive

I LOVED ME. The story was well developed and very deep (see NPC companion dialog). I am ecstatic about ME2

Yeah, I loved my Bionic. I remember Throwing the Matriarch off the screen into some pit and she died immediately.

I wonder if there is many misstaking Mass Effect for a action game rather then RPG? The thing with this is the story and character development not the action part.

That said I am a bit disappointed still. I think they should have progressed further. I liked KOTOR over this in term of characters/story. But also in Mass Effect you have main story and then nothing. It´s not like in bethesdas titles where it´s the side stories that is the main story. And there is no fun in looting or just living your life. You are a soldier that is going to beat mr evil guy or join mr evil guy that´s it.

Still if you are mature enough to enjoy rpgs its great even though it don´t quite reach up to the absolute top.

The game needed more depth. It needed more historical information outside the main plot. It needed deeper and greater rewards for exploration of planets. It needed tighter controls for the rover, (though I actually kind of liked the floaty Moon-Patrol buggy.) :) It's still an excellent game.

As far as being derivative, show me something that isn't.

I could only play in 30 min increments bored to years with the lame boring cinematics. I love a good story but Commander Shepard was so wooden and boring that I could give a crap what happen to him.

Should have tried a Female Shepard, she's voiced by Jennifer Hale which is one of the best voice actors you'll find in a game.

I played it for about an hour.. then quit.

For one, I don't like sci-fi games/movies/etc. They just don't do it for me. I don't even really like Star Wars.

Two, I hated the combat. I can't quite remember why since it was a long time ago, but I hated it.

I also didn't like Fallout 3 very much. For some reason, FPSRPG's just make me want to barf.

If you do get into it. Stick to the mainquest and not exploring each and every planet. The random other plants are lame, and just seem like a chore. Im a perfectionist gamer who likes to explore everything and this just got to be a long drawn out unworthy expidition with no side stories but only petty extras to be found, not enough reward for the punishment one goes through entertainment wise.

this is the best advice to anyone even thinking about finishing the game. find a sidequest? DON'T DO IT. no matter how interesting it sounds. you will get sucked in, expecting riches and glory, only to be dissapointed again and again. I wish I had known this earlier, so I could have finished it. but it is too late for me, I got burnt out on one too many of the same damn sidequests, and could not finish the game no matter how hard I tried. I got about halfway through, and I keep hearing people say "but the story roxorz!!111" and it gives me the will to try, which I have more than a few times. but I just can't stand playing for more than half an hour even if I do manage to run the game, it's just that boring.

Not to resurrect this thread, but I didn't want to start my own. After over 10 hours invested into this game it is boring me to death. I wish I could fast forward to the exciting parts...but the combat is lame, the AI is about as smart as a pet rock and the characters for most part uninteresting. The only thing, IMO, redeeming of the game is the "hack the lock" mini game.

AMEN to those saying this game is JUST BORING. Sure, there is the story...but if you want a GAME look elsewhere. If you want an interactive story, then maybe. *YAWN*

I know what you mean. I enjoy the game, but even still I only play it in hour long bursts. Otherwise I just get bored. I think the graphics are great, I enjoy the combat and the main story is interesting. I love reading the history of everything and hearing everybody's stories. It's just how it all comes together....idk...it just doesn't feel right. I'm progressing though, still think it was a good purchase ($20 off steam).

I tried and tried to like ME, but for some reason it bores me after about two hours into it.

It's odd because I normally love Bioware stuff, and it is somewhat like KOTOR, which is one of my favorite games of all time.

This.

Ya, I tried to keep myself interested in this game long enough to finish it, but I couldnt do it. I am not saying this game is bad or boring it's just not the style of game that can keep me interested. To date it's the only bioware title that I haven't loved.

Don't want to preach to the choir but I could not get into the game either.

The story seemed real interesting but the whole "fake FPS" system was just done very sloppy imo. Could never get comfortable with the controls so I gave up.

Just blast through the game, Ill amdit I didnt find it too fun at the begining but just running through it as fast as I could I can look back and say I had a good time playing it.

Not trying to be rude, but you say you don't like sci-fi games, but here you bought two expecting to make yourself like them?

Do some research before you buy games man.

I'm trying to get into playing it as well. I like Sci-Fi in general and I loved KOTOR , one of my favorite games. I think once I make it past the Citadel things will be ok, its just so big and overwhelming. I think I might need to pick up the Strategy guide for this one.

I liked Mass Effect, though I can't force myself to finish it. The sequel looks pretty good. I do think Bioware dropped the ball HARD regarding DLC for the first one. Only two pieces of DLC that were both garbage.

I already gave this game a shot at grabbing my attention more than I have with any other game. I have come to the realization that this game is just not for me, and I have no intention of continuing to try and make myself like the game. I am now onto dragon age and most likely borderlands when im done with this one.

Had it wrapped on my desk for months
Poped it in tonight
BOREING! Making an interactive FMV multiple choice was stupid
What's with the fucking shitty bouncing sniper scope
I've handled and fire long range rifle shots before no scope is going to woble that much onless you are on a moving platform.

The special that shows all the people it took to make the game is uber failure why do you need 50-75-100 people to make a single game?

Basically you don't understand how RPG's work, especially Bioware's RPGs.

Game =! real life, However I sincerely doubt you could steady a meter long sniper rifle without benching it either. Furthermore this is a sci fi RPG and while the scope weave may be a little excessive it was probaby there for game balancing reasons, I do feel it made that part a little annoying.

I suppose your point is that one person could have made a game that you didn't enjoy so why employ more than that. However this just comes off as incredibly ignorant.

To me, the game was tits. I enjoyed the heck out of my first play through. The second time through was a bit tedious, I ended up skipping quite a bit of sidequests and swearing never to play it again. I will be buying ME2, hopefully it will have more replay value.

The reason your sniper scope was bobbing and weaving was because you were not trained in sniper rifles yet. Once you get to halfway through the skill tree there is little bob and maxing it there is zero.

Is it realistic? Not necessarily, but that's how RPG's work - you built up your character to be able to use certain skills. It's called character progression.

I maxed sniper rifles and never used them. I was always better off mindlessly spamming my pistol and popping that one cooldown every few minutes. That to me was the biggest dissapointment since I made... you know... a sniper.

Why complain about lack of DLC when you admit in the same sentence that you didn't even finish the game?

I'm not going to defend the game (I loved it). I'm going to ask what's with all the attitudes? I mean becuase someone likes this or Halo and haven't played the 15 year old RPG or shooter that you deem the best they are sheep or not a real gamer. Pathetic Really. How about give sheep such as myself some good RPG Sci-Fi game to play? Because of Mass Effect and KOTOR on consoles us sheep are interested in RPG's .

i found it very linear and fairly boring but the storyline was interesting enough to keep me going.

I loved Mass Effect (I'd easily put it in my top ten best games of all time). Sure, it was pretty linear, but most RPGs that have a good story are. It did have some weak points IMO, like the generic weapon/armor system (only a few basic types, numbered one through ten to denote how powerful they are), which made the whole concept of advancing your characters along via new gear pretty uninspiring when compared to the loot in a game like Dragon Age.

A big factor in how much I liked ME was definitely the sci fi aspect. I'm a huge sci fi nerd and it was so refreshing to play a rich Bioware RPG that wasn't another Tolkienesque D&D spinoff. If you don't like sci fi then you definitely would not like Mass Effect.

I jumped on Mass Effect for $10 on a Steam sale...the story is interesting, the combat is meh. The dialog system that I've heard so much about is actually quite frustrating at times. The options the game gives you are often a little deceptive. I'll choose to say one thing sometimes and my character says something completely different from what I wanted to say.

So, I tried playing ME again, but with a different strategy: skip all of the side missions (boring, unintersting), bypass almost all of the dialog (blah...) and play it like an FPS. It was an okay game after that.

I'm playing Age of Dragons, and it's a LOT of fun. Great story, great gameplay, very deep game.
