MW2, No Dedicated Servers, PB, 9v9 limit, leaning, etc etc

First, the "hosting" option has been around in a lot of games way before MW2. Second, do you know for sure that the host has 0ms lag in MW2? I believe I've hosted at least a couple games and I did not notice this. Is there a way this can be measured? Where did you get your information on the MW2 coding. And let's talk about the concept of "advantage"...come on, gamers who play on decicated servers don't like "advantages"....you must be kidding. The competitive gaming community loves advantages, it seeks them out, with a passion. I've gotten into decicated server COD games where someone has blown away and wreaked the whole game w/ some kind of advantage hack...and it sucked.

.

Unless IWnet magically creates 150+ms lag for the host they have zero ping. Do you know anything about networking at all?

Nice comment. Yes I do. And that's my point, you don't know how it was designed or if a lag has been introduced....do you?

What was so balanced about dedicated servers that allowed people to jump in and out of game at will, mixed experience levels, hacks (there are plenty), undocumented game mods, etc. Don't the people who modded the game have an advantage?

Here's what I know: we are being bombarded by people on the internet trashing this game without ever having played it; and the real purpose of their posts is to go after Infinity Ward to get what they want. Go check out the Infiinity Ward pc forums for MW2 and the posts are just trash talk.....no substance, no help, just kids trashing anyone who tries and post with an honest question or positive comment...it's so obvious that it's embarrassing. No wonder IW is not listening to these kids....they're acting like spoiled brats, and they only want what they want and they're going to wreak every thread till they get it....if you have kids, does this sound familiar. So these are the "dedicated server" gamers I'm supposed to identify with, eh.

I totally agree with your 3rd paragraph, the 2nd one however doesn't fair so well.

So i see this thread is the most popular thread so here it goes.

Anyone else experiencing problems with the game meaning it freezes once in a while and then resumes to normal? Frames do not drop just freezes and comes back to normal. Friend had the same problem and all he did was lower the textures settings to high instead of extra and it worked but nothing for me. :(

Currently on older drivers, wondering if updating drivers would fix this.

So many times have i attempted to lean left and instead thrown a flashbang. It's like they did it on purpose for fun

I had that problem. I set the textures to high as well, and the AA to 0. It was lagging a LOT before that, now fine, but I got that occasional 1-2 second freeze...also my video card took a shit a few times.

I doubt you even have this game or the computer to run it.

To see what kind of guy you are dealing with here check out this thread http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1462524&page=2

WOW! Thanks for the trolling.:rolleyes: Internet tough guys like you crack me up.

First of all, you have no right to tell anyone what games they should or should not buy. Second of all, I'm not "bitching" about anything. I was simply posting some frustration with Activisions decision to penalize digital buyers vs. retail buyers. I am excited to play the game, it's just frustrating that I have to wait a few extra days.

I agree, your second one is kinda missing the point. I'm sure plenty of people enjoy the game. Also the IW forums have been the way they are since they announced...well they didn't announce it at all. We found out through a podcast. But anyway since that podcast launched it has been like that. The most vocal people will find forums and are rarely the voice of the majority.

You have to remember that the issue with fans, IW, and MW2 is not just dedicated servers. It's a whole host of issues from mods to public relations. If they had even released a demo and said "We changed a core principle in your multiplayer experience, but please check it out."

I'm sure the game isn't bad or horrible and obviously people are enjoying it, but I know for a fact there we're better ways of handling this and it has been shown in other games, and I have no desire to take a step back, because I know that is has bigger implications in the future. One example would be the cell phone bars. The bars mean nothing to me and while you may be able to kill just fine, it is an "ignorance is bliss" situation. With no control over net settings other than opening ports IW I'm sure has a lot of lag compensation and interpolation which makes the game "seem" smooth. People also bring up smaller map sizes and smaller player limits. The smaller player limits are only because IWNet cannot handle that much more. They could have easily made larger maps and balanced the game around a higher player number, but since we are on a P2P standard for this game, we cannot and once again it's a step back from what the PC can truly accomplish.

So, as an Australian, say I buy the game and start up some MP. Will I get on a server hosted by Australians, or am I totally screwed and will almost always be dealing with Aus to US pings?

From what I read you'll be matched with people in your area (AUS), but from time to time you read people getting weird matches like Canada --> Russia or something.

That did the trick! Thanks it doesnt look that bad but hey i like eye candy!

So far im loving the single player, no work today so im just gonna finish it til friends get home! :D

Then you get into the whole "host migration" issue and the fact that the matchmaking system doesn't support nearly as many players. There is no way that the matchmaking system works nearly as well as dedicated servers. Infinity Ward fucked up.

Bottom line is, no matter how good the matchmaking P2P system is, a dedicated server setup will ALWAYS be better. Period.

And that's what the fanboys can't argue.

And as above when you can get a smaller range of ping for the "bars" you get a much more telling picture of the quality of connection in P2P gaming. No more "wool over the eyes" that some people don't care about when it comes to these cell phone bars for ping. :(

For those of you that bought it,

Here is a guide to show you better ping rates,
http://www.infinityward.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=167264

Mod it and weep.

 With pings that high, I wonder why so many people are saying the game doesn't feel laggy. Game probably has hit boxes the size of a small village.

Lag compensation/interpolation I would assume. We have no way of knowing what kind of algorithm they have in place to compensate for higher pings. It definitely isn't a pure experience, but I'm sure if it is smooth and you have 3 to 4 "bars" you assume you aren't lagging and you just go with it. Ignorance is bliss? :(

Listen servers over residential internet connections lag more than properly spec'd up dedicated servers running on leased lines, that's basically fact.

You dont need listen servers to achieve forcing mods off or detecting hacks so this is a fundamentally flawed point. But even if you ignore that, it's still well understood by the gaming community in general that the best defence against hacks is not anti-cheat which is continually beaten, but by having a well admin'd server which is now impossible.

This is what happens when you do something very stupid, people get pissed. You reap what you sow.

Quick question ---

Since the game is installed via Steam and such, do you still need to keep the physical disc if you bought the retail copy? I.e. if I lose the disc and need to re-install can I do it via steam?

no, once activated through steam, you can download the game through steam, you could lose the disc and still reinstall at any time. This is how I installed since I did it remotely from work.

This.

I picked up the game last night because I had to see it for my self. All I can say is it sucks bad. The ppl on here who think it is fun need to be slapped. The fking FOV is AWFUL. You pull up the gun and you ant see shit. The movement of the game seems a little wierd and the match making system just plain sucks. It felt like an older game to me. The graphics are by no means a setup up. Makes me think if anything its a step down.

the FOV is the same as the default COD4 FOV, but i can see how it would bother some people. i'm pretty sensitive to FOV myself (Wolfenstein is unplayable, FC2 was as well before the fix) and MW2 is just fine to me. the movement is exactly the same as COD4. i agree matchmaking in general is no good, but MW2's matchmaking system works just as well as any other. you're off your rocker about the graphics. they are slightly improved, not a huge leap but in no way a step down. maybe it's the artistic style you have a problem with? the lighting seems a little more dramatic than COD4, but on par with WaW.

In fact, 402 was quoted earlier in the year saying that the PC game experience would not change at all. Flat out lies. I agree, the communications style and public relations for the PC release are totally inexcusable for a company and product like this.

Then you get into the whole "host migration" issue and the fact that the matchmaking system doesn't support nearly as many players. There is no way that the matchmaking system works nearly as well as dedicated servers. Infinity Ward fucked up.

My experience last night:

1. Merc TDM, 12 players. Six of us had 3 or 4 green bars, six of us had one 1 red dot. The game felt like we were fighting in molasses. We suffered through two maps before someone asked the red dots to leave. Since I was one, I left, so I have no idea how things improved. Nice matchmaking

2. Merc TDM, 12 players. Three players in the high twenties, five players level 3 or lower. Nice matchmaking.

3. Merc TDM, 12 players, all pings in the green. Host leaves, host migration delay lasts 50 seconds, then we're dropped as no suitable host was found. Nice matchmaking.

The new weapons and perks are interesting, but the game play itself is boring and game entry is unacceptable. It would be nice to see IW respond to some of these issues.

I guess we have different opinions.. I went back and fourth between cod 4 and MW2. The graphics are no better and look worse to me. Its like the surroundings in MW2 lack detail. The movement thing I brought up to a buddy who also plays cod 4 and 5. He noticed the same thing. I am wondering if the FOV is effecting how the movement feels to me. The FOV is awful... I have always played at 80 and it looks great like that. COD4 and COD5 are the only games I play so I am very familiar with how they look. The graphics are by no means an upgrade. I will play some more when I get home to make sure I am not just seeing shit. I really wanted to like this game despite no console or dedicated servers.

hmm i'll have to pay more attention to the movement when i get home tonight and make sure i haven't been overlooking it.

Yeah really. Wow...

Prime example of how the media is able to make people believe anything on the news.

This part is great......

"Matchmaking & Smoother Gameplay
: When you want to player a multiplayer game on PC, in the past. You’d have to scroll through a Server Browser which listed every available server which was hosted by individual server admins. Each had their own private rules, mods, or ways of playing the game. Most players would also use the server browser to find just the best quality game (based on PING)."

Ya man, matchmaking and "smoother" gameplay. What a pain it is to browse through servers! lol

"Most players would also use the server browser to find just the best quality game (based on PING)."

Ya I mean, why would anyone want to find the best quality game based on ping? How absurd! lmao

"Cheat / Hack Free Games: The biggest benefit of using IWnet by far is the fact that you don’t have to worry about joining a server full of aim-bots, wallhacks, or cheaters. Or relying on the server admin of the server to constantly be monitoring, banning, and policing it. Modern Warfare 2 on PC allows us to control the quality of the game much more than ever before as well as utilizing the VAC (Valve-Anti-Cheat) system to keep games clean of hackers and cheaters."

This part is just plain hilarious.....I should post this quote to the IW forums with the screenshots of the wallhacks/aimbots already available lol..

If THAT ain't the final nail in the coffin I don't know what is. Wait oh yeah, there's still the possibility of IW including DS in the future.
