Dragon Age Origins discussion...

Question,

How in the hell do you take down that one Revenant in the Brecillian Forest just outside the Werewolves Lair ? I've fought that fucker so many times it hurts. I have the whole set of armor minus that one piece he drops.

After messing with the runes on the Tombstone? Yeah that was crazy. I took him out last night. I have Me (Dual wield Rogue), Sten (2Hand), Alistair(1H + Shield), Morrigan. We are all around lvl12.

I had Morrigan immediately put force field up on the Rev then took out the adds no problem. While rev was still in force field, mana potions, heals, etc to regenerate. Then just proceeded to wail on him with everyone. When force field was up on Morrigan again, I used it and then took the time to regenerate the party, heals, mana pots, etc. We used a lot of potions, I wont lie. Haha. Everyone has a tactic slot to drink a potion when below 25% health. Morrigan has a tactic to heal when party member has health below 50.

Force field is pretty versatile. Besides crowd control, I've used it as a healing spell (sort of) and a pulling method (charge in and self-forcefield!). Pulling with it can be pretty funny, it draws the melee enemies together then you can toss AE of choice without hurting your ally.

Wynn made a great healer but I've had to, uh, cut her from the roster. :)

Has anyone played around with Shale's support tree? That lets him grant regen bonuses but make him stand still. Useful?

$HIT, I never even thought about "force fielding" myself / party member!! Ive always used it on enemies. Thanks!

I just picked up the game from my local Gamestop.

Quick question: Which difficulty is similar to the "Hardcore D&D" difficulty from Baldur's Gate 2? I wanna start off that diff. Seriously, I'm actually waiting for confirmation.

Apparently there's a huge memory leak or something. Load times are rapidly getting worse.

Yup they do. I did a comparison on 2 installs, one to a normal HD and one to a SSD.

HD works fine and loads are good for a while then starts to take longer and longer.

SSD loads almost instantly to start with, but then starts to show the same increasing load time behavior, especially when I'm 4-5 hours into the game. :D

I'm hoping they can patch it.

I havn't had any probs, and I'm around 30 hours into the game. It loads faster when I have to reload constantly...I don't let any of my guys fall, which equates to 3 times more reloading lol.

Great now I've probably gone off and jinxed it!

Hey, does any one have problems with F5 (quicksave) and F9 (quickload)? None of them work, and they are setup right in the control menu. It's of no consequence, just a few extra clicks going into the saving/loading menus.

Happy DA-ing! :D

If you haven't noticed the load times for each zone taking longer and longer the longer your play session is, then you're one of the only ones I've heard of without the issue.

In total I'm about 60 hours into the game, nearing the end, and when I first boot it up, loading into Delerim takes all of 1-2 seconds. After playing for maybe 3 hours, it takes closer to a full minute to get into Delerim.

My F5 and F9 keys work fine for me. Perhaps some other installed software causing an issue? Thats the only thing that comes to mind.

Hey, no reason to rain on my parade, Denerim loads in a few all the time. The only thing that takes more then a few is the dang crossed blades symbol when I get attacked while traveling. Otherwise good to go.

Yea idk, I want to play DA more then I want to figure it out lol. :D

have the load issue here too, after about an hour or so of play. exiting the game takes care of it.

Wasn't trying to rain on anything. Most people I've chatted with seem to have the problem, and if you don't, then something is obviously different.

Consider yourself lucky, not rained on if you don't have the issue.

And yes, a quick restart of the game fixes it.

The load times are fraking horrible the longer you play the game. They need to fix that shit asap, having to save and exit/restart the game is garbage, but anyway.

So, Wardens Keep DLC was totally worth it just for the very nice Armor drop there. :D
I like this game more the more I play. Can't wait for some mods to start coming out for this and hopefully some more DLC content from Bioware extending the game.

I havent noticed any long load times here either, nothing that made me even think there is an issue.
16hrs play time.

In case it matters/helps, heres my hardware/OS specs
Win7 32bit
E8400
GTX260 195.39 driver
4GB
X38 mobo
330GB/platter hard drives/16MB cache, default config for swap file

The load times get noticeable after hours of gameplay. If it gets really bad, I exit the game entirely and restart which takes like 10 seconds. It's extremely fast / snappy initially, but gets progressively worse...

What order do you guys suggest I tackle the main quests? I just got access to the world map and randomly went to the Dalish elf camp not knowing where I was going but don't feel like starting there quite yet on that quest. I hear you get Wynne at the mage tower? Maybe I will try that first since I don't plan on speccing Morrigan in healing at all. Or should I go grab Shale or do one of the DLC quests? Kind of cool that there are a few options here.

I'm telling you... this game doesn't care much about the Video card. I'm running a 1900XT on a 1680x1050 with maxed on some things like detail. Medium on AA and shadows. My card hasn't reached it's full heat. (I need to turn on the FPS number to get exact numbers). If you have a decent CPU, this game will play well.

... still waiting in line for the 5850... but I'm in no rush now since this game seems to be more CPU intensive.

I didn't finish the game, so I can't speak for end of game stuff, but so far, I haven't noticed any problems with the frame rate.

It doesn't really matter, the mobs scale to your level. I did the the DLC first for fun and so I could have Shale along for the rest of it.

Yeah go with the mage tower quest.

It tends to be a problem if you play for very long contiguous periods of time (which thankfully I can say that I have thanks to the quality of the game). It's not a major issue, as it can be fixed by simply closing the game and reopening it, but it does get annoying when it takes several minutes to do a zone transition.

Orzammar is (in my opinion) the best of the zones in the game. I enjoyed it more than any other. The Brecilian forest, on the other hand, was a bit of a letdown.

Played for quite a long time yesterday and the load times didn't seem to get any longer. Of course I wasn't sitting there with a stopwatch or anything..

Holy Cow, my rogue is doing crazy damage. Alastair can’t pull agro, even with the threat buff… She’s assassin/dual wield specced. I almost have enough to buy that $140k dagger from the dwarf city. What’s cool about dual wield is that if one weapon gives a +damage bonus, then it affects both weapons. So right now I have a dagger that gives +3 damage. So when I buy the other dagger, it will be a bonus of +6 damage to each dagger… Right now she’s back stabbing for 60 damage almost twice a second. When I buy the dagger, it gives a +30% backstab/crit bonus. Holy shit, it’s gonna be insane…

Also, here’s a really cool custom tactic I found last night.

1. If enemy status = stunned, go to Tactic 3
2. Enemy (target of controlled party member) use <stun ability>
3. Enemy (target of controlled party member) use Attack.

This helped a TON. Because for the longest time my guys would blow all their stun abilities on a single target, which is a huge waste. Too bad I didn’t figure this out until I was mostly done with the game…

I really cannot get into this one, which is unusual for me w/r/t a Bioware game

Any good guides on tactics/party control?

I've been having a pretty hard time with the tactics, simply because you do not have enough slots. My biggest problem is my main is a mage, and I usually try to sleep/horror when I start an encounter. Unfortunately, my nooblet allies decided they want to each go off and wake up all the other sleeping people. I can focus fire them to an extent, but they always seem to bash some random sleeping people.

Playing with main Mage, Allistair, Sten, and bard/rogue lady. Is there a way in tactics to convince her to fight people from behind while in melee? I try to make her fight ranged, but when she gets up close she insists on fighting people from the front, even when they are engaged by my tank.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!

Did anyone else have to fight Sten? He got all up in my face about not heading south to fight the darkspawn, and then demanded we fight. This happened after I killed Connor (whoops), dicked around in the main city for a few hours doing quests, and then went to Haven. I wrecked his shit, asked if he wanted to leave, and he stayed, then his approval of me went UP!

I can't check right now but there should be a way to set all your people to "Passive" mode while still enabling tactics. It's a drop down list at the top right of the tactics screen.

Once you set them to passive, make sure all their offensive abilities assist the controlled character. That way they won't take any action until you target an enemy. It's an easy way to focus fire without having to micro manage the party...

Why didn't you go to the tower during Radcliffe to save Connor? Seriosuly, you would've gained a lot brownie points with Alistair and Wyne.

Anyways, does anyone have troubles getting money? I really want some of those 132gold items, only problem is the max I've had is 36gold . Then I bought some stuff like backpacks, potions, better weps, etc. and now I'm dirt poor.

I did actually do up to saving connor although the route I chose definately didn't impress alister or Wyne :)

I believe "FrostyPrincess" is she, not a he, but I could be mistaken.

No, I'm male, I've never said otherwise.

Funny looking woman, from the Steam account picture I saw a while back (the one with a boot on top of his head)

Nice, my first stalker :)

You played 16 hours straight? The load times definitely get longer after a 3-4 hour stint.

+1. I played yesterday for around 3 hours, and continually died and had to reload during a boss fight, and those load times took forever, but other times it loaded up in a split second.

I am also having some disproportionate load times. It probably tops off for me at about 30-40 seconds, and this was after playing a 12 hour stint on Saturday.

Having a blast with a level 14 duelist though, stab stab.

Sorry I meant 16hrs total play time.
You have made it clear now that session time is critical.
4 hrs is about the longest I have played in one session so I probably havent hit hit on the issue.

'Cautious' mode will make them flee to safety, if you want a pure ranged character. Just gotta watch that they dont flee in the wrong direction and pull more mobs.

I've found that if you want to do something morally questionable, make sure you dont bring a party member that wont like that decision. Taking a -10 influence hit is easily cured with a few gifts, but some NPCs will attack if you violate their core principles. What they dont know wont hurt them...

I am playing through the human noble origin story as a 2h warrior. I have to say the origin part was pretty boring, maybe I wasn't in the mood. Anyway once the actual combat picked up I got more into the rhythm of what my character could do. He makes a good offtank and DPS. I have died a couple times, mainly due to my own carelessness. My current party consists of the above referenced warrior, Alistair (as main tank), Lorrien (the rogue lady) and Morrigan. Sten and the dog aren't being used. However I've been reading through this thread and there is a mention of a Wynne character who I haven't ran across yet. Is she before or after Redcliffe, since I am about to battle the zombie horde?

There is no before or after, it's up to you the order you do the Blight quests

Whats the best way to make Alistair a better tank? I've tried switching him over to sword/sheild but he can't take more than 2 or 3 enemies at once.

I've ditched Alistair, he crumples too easily compared to my other companions.

Pump the 2nd branch in weapon and shield, then pump the 3rd. Get someone to forcefield him and heal as needed. He gets the job done.

Is there much difference between the steam version and the retail version? I've seen some deals on retail ver but I would like to know if a retail copy can be activated on steam and if it requires a cd to run? also is the collectors edition worth the price difference over the regular one?

Question,

How in the hell do you take down that one Revenant in the Brecillian Forest just outside the Werewolves Lair ? I've fought that fucker so many times it hurts. I have the whole set of armor minus that one piece he drops.

Revenants are easily kited. They will tend to chase after one character, at the expense of other characters (even those that are hacking away or shooting at him). Also, revenants have REALLY HIGH armor, so you got to either pull out those armor piercing weapons, or just go home (or, use elemental weapons with fire or lightning damage -- immune to cold afaik), or use very damaging 2H weapons which will pierce the armor regardless. The thing I hate the most is his mass pull spell. I've lost many a mage to that.

Revenants are some of the hardest creatures in the game (to me), but they get alot easier if you're employing the right tactics. The first time I was up against one, I couldn't even damage 1/5 of its health. Then I realized that I couldn't simply walk in there and beat on the thing senselessly. Planning and frequent pausing were needed.

After putting in quite a bit of time (Beat Redcliffe and the Circle tower along with sidequests and Stone prisoner) the main thing i would say that has helped me in combat is making good use of working out the tactics to assign to my party and speccing Morrigan in disables/heal.

My main party is Allister, Morrigian, Leliana, and me (Dual wield warrior).

I use Allister as the tank and have him setup to threaten/taunt against the highest health person. Once he gets the attention of about everyone in a fight I have Morrigan cast force field around him (So he takes 0 dmg) and then I go around him with the other three mopping up the mob.

I have Morrigan specced with Cone of Ice which is extremely useful against a group and thenw ith my main I go around criting them which is a insta kill if they are frozen.

Tactics wise in order to get more tactics you can go cunning if you need them badly or every few lv's you get access to train a new skill (not the ability screen) but the one where you can select Poision making, survival, etc at the bottom of it is combat tactics, which grant more slots to that character.

Just go through the list of your fcharacters and work out what you want them to do. Have the healer pop a heal on someone when they are <x health, have your character apply their passives when they see a visible enemy, etc.

I have some things set like for Morrigan to cast vuneribtly hex on the main target and Leliana to use shattering shot on the target with highest armour and Allister to use Cleanse area if anyone is poisioned/disabled, etc.

Then set thier attitudes to what you want. I have most at default but I switched Leliana to ranged (specced her into archery since she was already trained in it some).
