I just ordered an i5 750 and im wondering just how capable it is versus the i7 920.... how high can/should i clock it, what kind of cpu cooler should i pick up, etc.

let me know what you guys think

heres the rest of the build
msi p55
hd 5850
ocz 700w
corsair dom. ddr3 4gb
hitachi 500gb 7,200rpm

It all depends what your doing, i5 is very capable. if your gaming you probably wont notice much of a difference. Raw processing the 920 will win, partly because of the triple channel memorty.

i5 can OC pretty far, but some have found contact issues with high overclocking on boards with foxconn CPU sockets.

As for a cooler probably go with one of these

OR

Both are exceptional coolers and will let you OC and stay cool

If your on a budget the Scythe Mugen 2 and the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ are very good coolers and hang with the TRUE and Megahalems.

How high you can overclock it depends on the the CPU and there is no guaranteed overclock. I would also consider another PSU as that OCZ is known to have out-of-spec ripple issues above 500W (granted, you won't be above 500W).

[H]ardOCP did a good comparisson already. Things that need memory bandwidth, 920's triple channel memory wins.

I am working on my i5-750 build right now, no problems getting to 3.9ghz with my TRUE cooler so far.

Should be a pretty close race...

i7 basically has the 8 core simulation that may give it a slight edge in performance.

All in all the i5 is certainly a great performer.
