So I setup my WHS yesterday and was very excited as all appeared to have gone smoothly. This morning, I attempted to create my 1st backup-it failed. It said my E drive was not a recognized format. My E drive shows up in my computer- but is not accessible, and is now in RAW format. I am confused.

  1. What causes this to occur? a corrupt file?
  2. How to I switch it back to NTFS?
  3. How do I recover the data that was on the drive?
Please help.

Downloaded the WD diagnostic tool. Ran the quick test and received a failure:

I am now running the extended test....which appears as though it will take several hours.

Any suggestions?

If the SMART test failed then you might be out of luck.

You could try a recovery program like File Scavenger which can sometimes identify files even when the NTFS partition table is missing.

I would also suggest not running the drive until you're ready to perform the recovery. If the drive has a mechanical problem it could further damage itself.

So do you recommend I quit the extended test, attempt to recover the data, then try to diagnose the issue?

In my experiance SMART test usually don't fail even when there is a problem, so if the short test is showing failure that's a good enough sign for me to start recovery and toss the drive.
