Torchlight is available on Steam

He means it's cartoonish looking, which obviously it is (I'm talking about Torchlight).

I've warmed up to the demo somewhat, but it still isn't a triple-A title, and I pretty much disagree with those people who are saying that they 'gladly' would've paid $40 for this - I wouldn't have. I'm still not sure I want to spend $20 on this.

What are the further levels like? Do all levels look identical?

I don't think this game needs dual core, or even a fast single. Hell, it has a netbook mode. It must run on just about anything made in the last 15 years. I think it just uses the full CPU then applies a frame limiter so we don't all go in super speed.

Netbook mode doesn't really seem to do anything, and right now its more or less unplayable on a netbook unfortunately. I doubt it actually needs 100% of even a single core of a modern desktop, however.

God, do all clones have to be so kiddish looking? First it was Heroes of Newerth and now Torchlight. No sale.

Great, don't buy or play it then. The art direction/design in this game are part of its appeal/charm to me, Shows me the Devs actually have an imagination. Used to hear the same complaints about Diablo, Diablo 2, WoW etc etc....

Good graphics are a nice bonus and I like having them too, however, gameplay trumps graphics every time in my book.

Hey, I just wanted to say I just found some set item boots from fishing (Gorgon set) so yeah you can find things besides just fish.

I was fishing in a dungeon, not in town, if that makes a difference...

That's funny. I just found the same set of boots last night. Level 15 now.

Multiple points in the swoosh attack for the Avenger seems to work great.

It's a budget title from an indie developer. You can't make a game with hyper realistic visuals on an indie budget. The developer has simply chosen an art style that fits with their limitations. If the art style is enough to put you off of a great game at a great price, that's your loss.

If you have the Diablo itch like I have its worth the money. If not Id wait until you do.

Still wish the game had multiplayer CoOP :)

My Brothers and I love to game together this time of year. And this game would be perfect for like 3 or 4 players in a group. We don't want a full blown MMO, just this same game with simple CoOp

I still can't get AA to work in the demo. Not that it's a deal-breaker, but for some reason when I select the AA option, it shoots me back to the main menu and when I check on the setting it's unchecked again.

No, each area has it's own tileset. I've so far seen mines, a lava prison, dwarf fortress, jungle-type ruins, and probably another one I'm forgetting because I haven't had my coffee yet this morning. But yeah, they do change, and in my opinion they get progressively more impressive looking.

What resolution are you running? I cant enable antialiasing at 2560x1600 in Vista x64 but I can in XP Pro. I can enable it at lower resolutions in Vista x64 though. Very odd.

1920x1200. I haven't tried forcing anything in the nvcp yet, though. Maybe that works? I also don't see any config files or anything either. But this is still the demo so some stuff might be left out in terms of config files, but I am not sure.

Mines, some weird floating area, some deep underground cave like area, catacombs, lava prison, jungle. That is all I have seen so far at level 23.

Ah, the lava level! No game is complete without one. LOL!

I re-played the demo last night, as the female bow hunter, and on a higher level of difficulty, and it was much more enjoyable. I kind of like the animation of how she runs along - something as simple as that can either make or break a game (like the way I couldn't stand looking at that freak Geralt in The Witcher - get a haircut and get a real job).

So it looks like once again I'll be eating my words. I did the same thing with Risen... although I have my doubts that this game will even come close to matching the love I now have for Risen... I'm a blasted Risen fanboy, no doubt about it.

EDIT: What the hell is it with you guys and multiplayer? I don't even like multiplayer games. All the hassle of having to deal with real people... ya know, one of the reasons I play computer games... it's actually to get away from people.

I only played 1 min of the demo to test out a new system. AA worked fine. 1680x1050, Win 7 Ultimate 64, Radeon 5850, latest drivers.

If it had multiplayer I'd be all over this. But alas, it does not.

Yep couldn't agree more.

My two Brothers and I have been PC Gaming for almost 20 years together. We have played all the classic CoOp RPG's together, and is much more enjoyable that way, than by your lonesome. And TorchLight looks like a classic Diablo style game, that just has to have CoOp multiplayer for small group action.

The Wife is really digging it. I had to comment to her that she'd been running it for over 12 hours straight a short time ago, and once she realized it was true she just yawned, right there on the spot and got ready for bed. ;)

Apparently she likes it, and after messing around with D/D2 for a decade this was refreshing for her. Plus the randomness of a replay should ensure it'll last a good while - till D3 comes rolling in, at least. It's definitely a winner in my book because whenever I've tried to find games similar to D/D2 that I thought she'd like, she couldn't stand 'em.

Not this time, and we all know why: because it's done by the creators of D/D2 in the first place, basically.

Same here. Me and my brother would already own a copy.

played the demo, the art style doesnt bother me but i can see what people are saying.. the gameplay does not hold me.. theres just not enough substance there.. now if it was the exact same game but was an mmo, it would be a wow clone for sure but would have a lot more appeal due to the multiplayer element.. single player hack and slash is played out.. until D3 of course :p

Just don't see why more people are not up in arms with the lack of multiplayer ? This game will be eleventy billion times cooler with basic CoOp to play with a small 3 - 4 player group like Diablo2. But just a single player hack and slash game is cool for a brief period, but fades away fast, never to be touched again.

This game would out sell anything the rest of the year if it included CoOp multiplayer, I sure hope they can patch in the future ? My two Brothers and I would play this game non stop then.

As has been said countless times, this is the single player version of their upcoming mmo which isn't ready yet. If you would rather wait for the multiplayer, then fine, don't enjoy this in the meantime. "There's no multiplayer" is incorrect. "Multiplayer isn't ready yet" is.

I would put money against this in a heartbeat.

Runic already said they have no plans to add it and protesting isn't going to change it, there are PLENTY of people out there (like myself) who enjoy these kinds of games with or without multiplayer. The entire FATE fanbase pretty much loves this game.

Alsom since they're releasing an MMO based off this game in a year or two, what's the point in including multiplayer now? No one would really be interested in playing the MMO and modders would probably be able to find a way to expand the multiplayer since all the dev tools will be available to use. They would be shooting themselves in the foot.

Doesn't sound like the developer's are saying a big "no" to CoOp, they sure wanted it like everyone else does, just not enough man power, cash flow, and time to include it in game.

But to me it sounds like if they make some good coin on TorchLight now, it might possibly be added down the road as a patch.

I'd like to think in 3-4 months we'll see some sort of co-op if only in a limited capacity. Even if it was LAN only I know myself and many others would be sold at this price. I'm sure they're working on it and we'll see it Q12010

There are enough co-op and multiplayer games on the market already. The people who like single player games need single player games as well - let's not forget that.

And yeah I realize that most mulitplayer games usually have a single player component, but all too often the single player component ends up being neglected - can anybody say Borderlands.

Ok name the many games since Diablo 2 released back 9 years in the year 2000 that are similar ? Only one in nine long years, and that was Titan Quest.

The Action RPG is not as common as you would think. So now comes along a wicked cool game in TorchLight, actually made by former Diablo developers, and it has zero CoOp  I am just saying, this game screams basic small group LAN CoOp or something.

It's their game, they can do whatever they want with it, and apparently they want to not make it just another damned co-op MMO clone of everything else.

Like it? Great. Don't like it? Move along... pretty simple I'd say.

Just tried the demo and its AWESOME, but no coop = no buy for me.

I would never play it :(

Perhaps everyone that wants co-op should email the developers. Maybe if there is enough of a demand they will add it. Otherwise wait for the MMO I suppose. I'm thinking this will be pretty popular with the Mac crowd since the last dungeon crawler was D2 I believe.

Straight from the developer is exactly what I said. All you guys/gals saying F off about CoOp they are making a multiplayer for the MMO version, just wait and play that  Well hello thats a completely different game, and not due out for another 2 years, how fucking hard could it have been to add in basic LAN CoOp support ?

Here ya go, they wanted CoOp more than anything in the game from the start.

:Bruce, which of the following two scenarios would you have found better: Waiting until Runic had enough time to add co-op support to the game before they released it, or releasing it as an SP game now and an MP game a year from now?

The first one, without question.

And why in the nine blue hells would you want Runic to spend time modding in an MP component to TL when that's going to be the whole point of the MMO?!?

Because the MMO version's going to be a completely different game, and it's going to be free. So if the MMo version's going to be everything the single player version's going to be except more, what was the point in paying 20$ for something that has a limited life?

@Zorachus, if you look at their situation, they made this entire game in under a year, because that was their plan. I'm kind of disappointed that there is no LAN coop either, but that doesn't mean it's an awesome game.

Also, I think you under-estimate how difficult it would be to just "patch" in LAN play. For $20, the plan was always to skip the LAN play, make a great SP game, and that's what they accomplished.

I get that. Just would have been willing to wait until 2010, and spend $50 on the same game just with CoOp support, and I bet the game would be a giant blockbuster, selling as well as Diablo 2 did back in the day. But with the game stuck at single player only, it is still an awesome game, but could you imagine if Diablo2 was ONLY single player and never included multiplayer ? Holy Sh!t, then D2 would not be the classic it is known as today, and that's what I am sad to see happen to Torch Light, it has the potential to be a once in a decade classic, just please for the love of God add in basic CoOp.

But I know they are a brand new company, need to get the basic game out to the audience for some influx of cash to keep them afloat and help develop their big MMO a couple years down the pipeline, totally get that. Just would be cool if they can maybe rebox the game and sell it again next year with full CoOp support, and I would like them to have my cash for the extra hard work that entails.

I definitely would like it co-op as well... and they are very active on their official message boards, even Steam forums, so they do see how many people want co-op... unfortunately they've probably made a contract with Perfect Worlds where they have to focus on the MMO now...

I would definitely love coop for this game though... would even spend some money on maybe a DLC that added it in.

Starcraft 2: The Death of Lan
Call of Duty: MW 2 The Death of Dedicated Servers
2012 is upon us and it is closer to our PC's than we had expected.

Darn, my hardcore mage died just. :( Damn those buyable dungeon maps!

I hit about 1% hp from a damned mimic (fake chest) on my 23 archer. It had my heart racing. I love how hardcore does that. I shoot chests first now. My shared chest is loaded with set and unique items at least. I'll probably remake a melee or a summon mage if I die on hard/hardcore mode.
