Torchlight is available on Steam

Damn Damn Damn! All this talk about TL and now I gotta check it out. I'm still playing Risen, Gothic III, Borderlands, Wolfenstein, Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed AND I have Dragon Age on order.. Tell me how am I supposed to get all this accomplished. How?? Oh all right I'll check it out.

So far I'm really liking Torchlight. It's a lot more Fate than it is Diablo. A lot more polished though. The UI is great, graphics are a step up from Fate but not by a huge amount.

I have only encountered one bug but it was potentially a game killer. I was doing a side mission (you know the ones where you are not allowed to use Town Portal?) and my character glitched up onto a ledge of a cliff. There was no path to get down and I couldn't just run off the edge. I thought I was screwed since I couldn't TP out, but then I used a charge attack and managed to get down (probably the same way I got up there in the first place!). This was in the second or third side quest that you teleport in to.

Another thing of note, Torchlight was overheating my video card when I first installed it (280 GTX @ 2560x1600), so I ran FRAPs and my FPS was up around 300. Enabling v-sync solved this by locking the game to 60fps. Card isnt even breaking a sweat now and the game runs buttery smooth

Question about fishing. Does anyone know if you can find items while fishing or is it only fish? In Fate you could find items, but so far in Torchlight I have only found fish.

Even though Torchlight shares a ton of similarities with Fate, I'm glad they have added blood and gore (even though it's not a huge amount). Good fun using your powers and disintegrating enemies into a cloud of blood :D

Really fun and addictive game. I can see me logging many hours and drinking many beers while fishing! Definately worth the $20 price tag. Sure the game could do with MP, but the single player campaign has plenty of great hack'n'slash gameplay to keep me well entertained.

Tried the demo and had to buy it. My wife likes the looks of it, she was a dungeon siege fan and its a little like that. Steam is nuking my wallet, about 90% of my game budget goes to them.

I'm very impressed and in love with this game. Well worth the price.

And for all you people who keep asking about multiplayer on every damned page, its posted all over the thread... READ IT! NO MULTIPLAYER! ...god damn

I *think* you only get fish from fishing, spent almost an hour today in dungeons and town, fishing and only got fish. Even if you did find items, I would find so much more rare/unique/set items dungeon diving than fishing, I find fish quite useful too.

So enable v-sync?

I'm going to download the demo.

I have too many great games right now. The $20 price tag is nice, but irrelevant. Right now, it's not the cost of the programs, but finding the time to play them. Right now, I only want to play the very best stuff out there. I have Arkham Asylum and Bioshock on the go right now - and they're both mind-blowing.

And of course Dragon Age is almost upon us. One more week to go.

I've found a few fish-related, but not fish, items. Like fish eyes, or fish meat, or whatever they're called (I'm at work so can't check what they're actually called). Basically they're potions that grant temp abilities. I think they act on your character because they go in your normal inventory screen, not the Fish screen. I've also found a pair of magic boots.

I'm really loving this game. Wish I wasn't at work, but at least my apartment is close enough I can get a little time in during lunch. :D

As for the multiplayer...I completely agree with the frustration, TheGamerZ. For somebody just finding out about this game it might seem a bit harsh, but this question seems to be asked a few times everywhere I've seen this game talked about. More than once I've seen the conversation turn from how fun a single player game this is into how bad, or lacking, the game is because it doesn't have this feature the developers never said it would even have. It's not a huge development team, they tried getting this out in less than a year, it's a solid and fun single player game, and it's only $20. Adding a multiplayer, or co-op, version would not have worked without some of that changing.

Fun game. I am playing on hard mode with hardcore enabled. I am just about level 18 so far. It is so fun with hardcore knowing that if I die even once I am completely screwed.

I bought Titan Quest gold during the D2D deal for 5 dollars a month ago and I have already played this game just as many hours. I am really liking it.

Tried the demo - meh.

This is one of those titles that will appeal to people because it is a budget game. It just astonishes me that people will tear a game like Risen apart, or they'll say that Bioshock is 'boring', or that Mass Effect is an awful RPG - but then they'll rave about something like this.

Or worse, they'll say that this game is great, but then they'll say that Dragon Age is a 'pretty generic fantasy RPG'. The gameplay in Torchlight is just plain tedious - there's nothing even remotely intelligent or interesting about this. With the stack of games I've got on my shelf right now there's no way I'd spend the time on this.

played the demo. kinda trying to decide if i should get this or go back to titan quest. can anyone tell me if the dungeon is random or is it the same thing everytime you go into it? cause if it is...its gonna kill replayability for me

If you'd taken the 3 minutes to read the interview i linked earlier or even just read the steam info page you would know it's generated randomly every time you reload the game. In the demo I got down to Floor 3 of the mines and needed to quit the game for a few hours to do other things. When I came back I had to fight my way back down to floor 3. Which meant more loot for me. :D

Yup, the dungeon is random.

The price point is nice, but for me, I just really dig hack'n'slash, loot finding games like this. I really enjoyed Fate, I think that game is excellent and I kinda consider Torchlight to be Fate 2. It shares so much in common, it's uncanny. I like the fact they have integrated a bit more of a story into the game opposed to Fate.

Fantastic being able to dual wield some pistols, then hot swap to some swords for melee combat. The powers are fun to use and I have planned out my character skill set already. He's gonna be one badass mofo! :p

I am still very early in the game but I would certainly not call Torchlights gameplay tedious. I'm havin a blast!

hack N slash = tedious.

No matter how you mash it up it is tedious, the only difference is to some people its a fun to others its not.

i never played fate. but i really think i may pick this one up

this is funny... everyone is comparing TL to mythos and the diablo series...

"Development of the game is led by Travis Baldree, designer of Fate, and Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer, co-designers of Diablo and Diablo II, joined by the team that developed Mythos"

that's from the wiki - hell this is diablo and mythos...

which mean this is WIN and WIN>

Can't wait for the full live online version which we all know will happen probably sooner than Diablo 3.

The demo reminded me of Titan Quest, which sort of didn't work too well on my old PC when I bought it on day one - except I spent most of that summer playing it.

I reinstalled Titan Quest just now on my new computer, and holy mackerel has the game ever stood the test of time (and it's smooth!). I don't want to get into a debate about this (those of you who are enjoying Torchlight, fantastic - I have nothing against people enjoying themselves!) - but honestly if you haven't played Titan Quest yet then you really should play that before you buy this.

I tried the Torchlight demo again - but it just seems so rudimentary. And those cartoony graphics just look silly.

Ah well, I'll probably end up buying it one day anyhow so I'd probably better just keep my mouth shut.

I think they both have their intended audience. Torchlight seems more for the casual audience, or those looking for a pure hack-and-slash dungeon game. A good bit of evidence for this is how easy Normal difficulty seems to be for people who've actually played an ARPG before, and I've seen one of the devs in the official forum even suggest ARPG players start on the higher difficulty level. Titan Quest seems to be geared more towards the non-casual audience.

I do agree with you, though. If you haven't played Titan Quest, check it out. I actually liked it more than Diablo 1 or 2, but that was probably because I liked the ancient myths setting to the hell setting.

I don't mean to derail the Torchlight thread but I was just shocked at seeing how well Titan Quest has stood up - those golden fields at the beginning of the game are superb!

I tried playing Titan Quest the last couple weeks before Torchlight came out... I dunno, it didn't do too much for me. Not sure why... good graphics, action-RPG environment. Just didn't scratch that itch that Torchlight is seeming to be able to do. Strange, eh?

I agree Titan Quest is a fantastic game along with its expansion pack. I actually enjoy the gameplay in Torchlight more than TQ. I think the UI is superb, loot drop model is spot on, fishing is a nice feature, pet is awesome, diversity in character skills is excellent. You can really meld your character to whatever your play style may be.

I'm used to the cartoon graphics of TL from playing Fate and I think the animation in TL is really well done. TL is geared towards the casual gamer right through to the seasoned ARPGer. If Easy and Normal settings are too simple for you, you can always crank it up to Hardest and turn Hardcore mode on.

Hey, I just wanted to say I just found some set item boots from fishing (Gorgon set) so yeah you can find things besides just fish.

I was fishing in a dungeon, not in town, if that makes a difference...

Awesome, that definitely gives more incentive to do some fishing! Thanks for letting me know :)

I dont know if this game could be any more identical to Diablo. There are diablo clones and then there is this... everything is the same down to the finest detail! The only thing different I have noticed is the fishing thing.

Still, pretty fun to play though until Diablo 3.

It is a decent game. Titan was better in terms of a hard core game. This one is too hack n slash for me but still fun. A well made game for sure.

Yeah, it's pretty close to D/D2 with some cool twists. My favorites, so far, are the pet and firearms. Even when items drop out of chests, barrels, etc. you can hear the same sounds from D/D2.

Wow. Anybody else notice their CPU usage loaded at 100% for a single core?

You'd think smart programmers would utilize dual cores these days.

I don't think this game needs dual core, or even a fast single. Hell, it has a netbook mode. It must run on just about anything made in the last 15 years. I think it just uses the full CPU then applies a frame limiter so we don't all go in super speed.

Anyone else not able to get AA to work in the demo? I checked it, and it minimized the game as if it was changing a setting, then it went back into the menu and the AA box was still unchecked. I assume they wouldn't turn this off for the demo so I am not sure what is going on. I am on 2x GTX 275s.

Well, I tried forcing AA in nVidias control panel and it pretty much seems to do nothing.

Yeah exactly. Why spend time/effort optimizing multi-threaded code in a game like this?

God, do all clones have to be so kiddish looking? First it was Heroes of Newerth and now Torchlight. No sale.
