Mozilla’s CEO says that Firefox has gained 30M users in the last eight weeks. That translates into a total of 330 million users a month. Impressive.

Over the past eight weeks, Mozilla has seen an average increase of 10 million daily users, from approximately 103 million to 113 million. That translates to a total of approximately 330 million monthly users . "It's amazing to have 330 million users," said Nitot. "That's the size of the population of the USA."

what is going on? amazon reported a 60% gain last quarter too i heard... it doesnt even make sense...

Cool, to be honest I really think the Browser Wars were over long ago. At this point does it really matter? I use FF and IE 8 (which has some integration with tools that I HAVE to have).

Maybe some of the numbers are from people installing windows 7 and downloading firefox again. So its not really any new user numbers probably.

Yeah, I'd really love to see how they define a "user". Is that just a download? Because, if so, I count for about 10-15 of those users after all the re-builds I've done this year on my home and work PCs.

lawl I seriously, seriously doubt it. Anyone who beleives really, anything those guys say, and blinded by fanboyism LOL

That's some funny math you have there.

I think it means that the browser is used by 330 million people per month at some point in the month, up by 30m people per month in the last 8 weeks.

Er...so wait. Their average daily user count 8 weeks ago was 103 million. Now it's 113 million. They're taking their "average daily user" count and multiplying it by 30 to get their monthly user count? Holy shit, their yearly user count is almost 4 billion people! More than half of the total population of the world is using Firefox, way to go guys!

So basically we've learned that a browser "monthly user count" is one of the fakest and stupidest marketing-speak ploys in the tech world. Good to know.

Their stats are fine - you guys are just totally misinterpreting them.

Average Daily Users: ~113m, up from 110m two months ago
Average Monthly Users: ~330m, up from 300m two months ago

This is entirely possible, considering that not everyone will use it everyday and they are counting users not uses. And no, they did not multiply 110m per day by 30 days per month, or that would be 3.3 billion users

Holy shit! They're only multiplying it by 3!

and I have reinstalled FF, about... 7 times so far?

Updated it a few more times, too.

Do all those count? After all, they aren't keeping track. (and yeah... I do clean install based on CDO -the way it's mean to be spelt- though Windows 7 has managed to last 3 months, so far.).

Best of luck!

I used to be all about Firefox but I stopped using it months ago and made the move to Google Chrome.

meh firefox doe sit sjob perfectly for me.

Wifes broher and sister got there facebook account hacked and was sent a link from one of their account to try a "cool" app, firefox detected the link as a scam the second she clicked it.

As long as it keeps my computer safe I'll never ditch firefox

+1.

Makes something out of nothing.
IE for corporate/managed use, FF for personal. Works for me.

They've said that the program pings the servers once every 24 hours. The chances of double counting most probably rests on the time the program was first installed. There is still a possibility of double counting, but there would be no way to eliminate them since each and every Firefox in the world won't be pinging at the same time. The only similarities is that each ping by each Firefox would be 24 hours apart. It's a case of not being able to do anything about it (except using a smaller factor for the monthly users number) rather than a deliberate act of misinformation.

All those users and they still can't get off their asses to write an x64 version. Just lazy.

This. I never used a ton of extensions, and Chrome has the most important ones (ad blockers). Not that FF was terribly slow, but Chrome is noticeably snappier.

but Chrome is noticeably snappier.

I agree with that. I made the switch back in the states and even with the internet in Iraq it is much faster.

do foxes eat acrons?! or maybe like fire ants, fire foxes eat anything?

I'm glad to see it getting more users. I see tons of commercials on the internet for chrome, so I won't be surprised if that become more popular soon.

Think about it guys. What came out that caused millions and millions of people to re-download and reinstall Firefox?

The Mozilla CEO is just like any other company's CEO. He put a spin in his facts and you guys are eating it up.

There is an x64 version (on linux, anyway). The problem is that there aren't any x64 plugins, so why offer a browser that would serve only to piss off and confuse most of the people who download it since things like flash, java applets, etc... would no longer work?

Also, a 64-bit version of Firefox wouldn't really get you anything, anyway. There isn't any real advantage to 64-bit vs. 32-bit as far as a web browser is concerned.

it would get me a version that I don't have to process-tree kill every time I want to close. That'd be a pretty damn good start.

Come on guys read the article before posting comments. The numbers are not based on downloads. They are based on requests for updates from people actually running the browser with a factor to account for people who use FF but where not using it that day. Would love to see how they came up with that multiplier. Anyway, I'm sure glad the browser wars are not over.

I'm all for FF (and use it on both of my computers at home), but I agree that the #s could be inflated from the Win 7 upgrades. The good news is that FF's market share has been steadily increasing at the cost of IE. Let's see what the figures are next month.

I uninstalled Win 7 because the favicons wouldn't load on my FF. I love my favicons on my FF.

FF rocks

How are they tracking this? Are they just counting unique downloads of their software isntall package?

^^^ read the dam article!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

or heck, even the posts in this thread, only 3 above you!

Or mabey you could take proper care of your computer cause i've never seen that happen on well maintained virus/malware free systems

fresh install. all drivers and ff 3.5.4 off an external. I find it pretty odd, myself, but then a lot of the x86 programs have picked up new bugs.

I'm going to have to go with "never seen Firefox lock up before" too. Perhaps you're using a plug-in that's poorly maintained or incompatible with 3.x?

My only quirk with Firefox is that lately they've been slower starting up. But once started, they're pretty decently quick.
