Amendment 138 was dropped from telecom legislation that is moving through the European Parliament. This amendment was going to protect citizens from being automatically cut off from the Internet but now that it's gone, member nations have the ability to force ISPs to cut off the access of persistent file sharers.

The proposed legislation operates under a "three strikes" system. A new state agency would first send illegal file-sharers a warning e-mail, then a letter and finally cut off their connection if they were caught a third time.

and how are they going to "catch" them? By putting out torrents for Transformers on Government servers? Isn't that entrapment?
 
I wonder where this three strikes your out originated from. Tell me it wasn't from the greatest country in the world that proclaims freedom for all. It wasn't from a state that is run by an ex Austrian citizen. This Three strikes your out is running amok in the rest of the world. Its like the pandemic flu.
 
How many speeding tickets can you get before your license is revoked? 10? 20? Revoking someone's use of the internet for pirating three items seems excessive. While I have little sympathy for your average pirate, the punishment must fit the crime.

Sounds fair to me. Perhaps we need to make it

3 violent felonies = life in jail

Or, 2 violent felonies = life in jail

What's wrong with justice, brah?

Love that we're on the US blacklist for piratin'. I find it mostly hilarious and ironic.

Hopefully this kind of policy doesn't catch on here. It seems the war on piracy is the new war on drugs. Guess governments like throwing good money after bad.
 
What's alarming here is that the majority voted in favor of 138 but a few paid-off copyright-group-member politicians have destroyed what democracy decided upon. It's disgusting.
 
O all the RIAA has to do is send a letter to every European ISP saying all of their customers are infringing and then the RIAA gets all of the EU off the net?

Try more like 3...at least that is the law in NYS.

Also, keep in mind piracy can also result in massive fines and jail time, so getting your access cut off is light IMHO.
 
I'd rather see a three strikes and you're in law to take care of real criminals than this.

"Entrapment is the act of a law enforcement agent inducing a person to commit an offense which would be illegal and the person would otherwise have been unlikely to commit."

There's nothing to stop them from going and downloading the torrent themselves to see who else is.

What they actually said was each house needs to have access to a minimum std of "broadband" and they set that at 2M.
They didn't actually say residence.
 
ISP's should be pissed about this, since this rule/law is effectively doing away with their customers. One could argue they were a burden on the network and costing the ISP money, but how many customers are going to be cut-off before they start to think this a bad idea?

Sounds like all this is going to do is promote WiFi hacking or the like. This whole thing seems to be really dumb, are they going to say you downloaded this and that and give an IP address as proof? So this person who's been *gasp* banned from using internet will go to a public hotspot or another internet connection and continue what they've been doing. This is so dumb that it's funny.
 
Well I guess its time for you Euro's to stand up for your rights and tell those fuckers where to stick their bill isn't. :D
