Apple Seeks Patent on Operating System Advertising

Seems pretty clear this patent is, although broadly labeled, mostly for cell phone or small device use. This would make sense as its been rumored Google was looking into doing something similar.

Here's an interesting thought, Apple looses the cell phone OS war to Google's Android, Apple sues Google for patent infringement due to the Adsense ads within the OS browser and games on the Android Market. I could totally see that happening with this.

There is a good chance that anyone who needs a free OS isn't going to be able to afford the bullshit they are being spammed with. then again we are talking about apple users.

I doubt they are going to put this into their retail operating systems. They would only be screwing themselves over if they did that.

This is Apple and Steve we are talking about here. Those two (or one) can do other can't even imagine. Once they get the patent approve, the will name it "iAd".

Wow... I don't see this going into apple PC's... but for some reason I totally see it going into the iPhones!!

Then they can build it into the OS when it go's multi carrier in the US and each carrier can build in there own special ad's so you can get lets say... unlimited sms messaging for free. Just watch our add's from time to time while you do it.

Thinking outside the box here..... This will never impact the [H] reader and here is why..

They are going to use this to help fund, through advertising dollars, a "free" netbook to the "poor" masses! Advertising revenue and brand placement at an early age and continuing to adulthood is way too tempting....

"SHOW ME THE MONEY"

Hmm, guess we now know why Snow Leopard only costs $29....

Coming soon in OSX 10.6.5 - advertising!

When I see these types of things i always that famous phrase by Albert Einstein:

"There are two Infinite things:
1.-The Universe.
2.-Human Stupidity.

I'm not so sure about the first."

Most assinine patent application I have ever heard of.

Lawsuits will be flying left and right the moment it's first implemented due to invasion of privacy.

LOL.... I wanna know how all the Die Hard Apple fans are going to justify this one. Basically Apple wants to integrate ad-ware into their os.. Good for you Apple users. Good for you!

HAHA! Bet your PC can't do that! :p

or rather... "Bet my PC will NEVER do that!" lol

"In some implementations, the operating system can disable one or more functions during the presentation of the advertisements..."

Well, until my computer starts printing money *on it's own* for me (in essence, paying me for my time)...then I'll continue to be the one to tell my PC what to do, and when to do it T.Y.V.F.M.

LMAO, the worst infection to hit a Mac os this century, is happily brought to you via...........Mac!!!!!

If I could get a $30,000 dollar car for $10,000, I would be willing to watch a twenty second ad every time I started my car.

Advertising isn't always a bad thing...

I'd guess you wouldn't mind watching a 20 second commercial before you're allowed to go into the restroom when youreally have to go :D

They'd probably have to chip the machines in some way so that only the ad-supported versions of the OS could be installed. The trick would be making it reasonably hack-proof, which is probably next to impossible.

Just name it Gibson, I hear they are very difficult to hack :p

First of all hopefully our disgusting patent system will not approve this garbage. Talk about prior art. This has already been known to be a direction OS will head at some point highly subsized and computers and free OS will be funded by Advertising. It is just somewhat pathetic that a patent can actually be submitted for this.

While were at it, lets patent a car that won't allow you to start or accelerate until you finish watching a 20 second ad which is displayed from your windshield. In addition, you won't be able to use your brakes until a 3 second ad is finished displaying.

hahahha too good :D

this would be on an apple product though.

They just need jobs to come on and tell them it's a feature, make them somehow feel superior for their mac and they will continue to sell as normal. Hell i'm willing to bet they would be proud of it.

I hope apple gets the patent, that way we won't ever see it on the PC

I'm a Mac

And I'm a PC

Whats going on Mac?

Mac are you there?

Mac?

Sorry, PC, I was disabled by an ad.

Well if this ever did happen you damn well know there would be a crack to disable the ads... Fuck Apple. But what is funny that the end user is always getting screwed by the software/music companies with these ridiculous money making schemes and in return the end user screws back. It's a constant war that will end. I guess someone has to pay the bill. Not me. Fuckem.

Play make your own patent with find and replace. heart defibrillator is a good one. Mailbox. Crosswalk Signal Traffic light . Airline boarding ramp. Emergency Exit. Fire Alarm. Elevator.

The toilet is configured to present one or more of the advertisements to users of the toilet. In some implementations, the toilet can disable one or more functions during the presentation of the advertisements and then enable the function(s) in response to the advertisements ending. That is, the toilet can disable some aspect of its operation to prompt the operator to pay attention to the advertisement.

The washing machine is configured to present one or more of the advertisements to users of the washing machine. In some implementations, the washing machine can disable one or more functions during the presentation of the advertisements and then enable the function(s) in response to the advertisements ending. That is, the washing machine can disable some aspect of its operation to prompt the operator to pay attention to the advertisement.

Actually this one should fail due to prior work. Windows had that program where if you let ads go one your PC they gave you a free copy of windows or office, I'll have to see if I can find the link.

Gonna spin this a different way.

Maybe the big, bad, evil Apple is patenting this to prevent it from being patented, and used, by another corporation - A selfless action to serve computer users across the world.

See? Just as plausible as any of the other explanations. Until this gets into software - big freaking deal.

I REALLY hope apple wins this patent.
Of course the Smuggles will turn it around and call it an "advantage" just like a second rate nvidia chipset.

Who wants to deal with that vastly improved Windows 7 when you can have big brother force feed you ads in OS X? Puh-shaw.

The very concept is obvious under the art and cannot be patented. Period. You could COPYRIGHT specific code to implement the function, however.

I want to patent BABIES...mmmkay? I want to patent Fucking... mmmkay? I want to patent picking my nose... mmmmkay?

... sure, that'll be $5K please, plus quadreniel maintainence fees. Thankyou.

I want to patent being a patent clerk....mmmkay? :eek::rolleyes::D

That's really the thing, if it ends up in OS X, shame on Apple. Until then, whatever, there are so many thing patented that don't get anywhere near the hardware or operating system. One of the Macs strengths is no adware or crapware like you get on a Dell, HP, Gateway, etc, just a desktop light and fast and ready to work. Why change something so fundamental?

And where is the [H] outcry on Microsoft putting ads into versions of Office 2010? This isn't a patent, its actually happening. Maybe because it isn't as big a deal since its just office software, but I dunno, I find it just a notch less offensive.

Sorry nagware the worl over should have a covered this patent even back in the DOS days.

Well I think we're ok with that because it's only going into their free Office 2010 Starter edition. People would rather deal with ads than have Office disabled in 60 days as it does now.

Windows Live Messenger is free and is ad supported also. So are many other commercial freewares.

If Microsoft put ads into paid versions of Office 2010 you can be sure there'll be some rioting going on.

What gets me is online advertising is that lucrative. I can't remember the last time I saw an ad on a page ans said, Oh, I need to click this ad and see what the Sham-Wow guy is selling.
