I know I should be running Vista or Win7 I am just too lazy to upgrade this week. I read on one of the newegg reviews that 5870 is not supported on windows XP. Has anyone tried it on XP?

My card should be here tomorrow.

There was reports about 5870 performing bad in XP but i can't remember where i read it if i find the link will post back, generally you should go for Win 7 64.

It definitely has to be supported, There are quite a few scores posted on hwbot for 3dmark2001se with the 5870 and its only worth running 2001se on xp. That said, this is only an assumption.

I haven't tried Xp with my 5870 but I'd like to out of curiosity. And I've also heard reports that the 5870 does preform much slower in Xp then it does in W7. But I'm sure that's due to the drivers. Ati probably puts all their efforts into W7 drivers now, windows xp is probably just an after thought now...

There is a guy in the forum and a guy on newegg having issues with XP.

I haven't gamed on it yet, but the drivers from the CD installed correctly on XP-32 bit SP3, so I'll load up a game tonight and see how it goes. Maybe Crysis or Far Cry 2.

I believe I tried Furmark and it worked, but I'll re-check it tonight when I get home.

I DO know that EyeFinity requires Vista or Windows 7 though.

Oh well time to upgrade the OS. I just ordered an SSD drive, should arrive by the end of the week. I think I can score a Vista copy from MSDN I have trough work. I will try to get it working on Windows XP just for giggles in the meantime.

It is kind of disappointing that they dropped Windows XP support. Especially when you consider Steam survey still shows it's the most widely used OS at 54%.

I will try it tomorrow on XP when the card gets here and will report here.

After the Windows 7 release expect that to change. If you can get your hands on windows 7 it will run well with that SSD drive.

If you have MSDN at the office, you should be able to grab yourself a copy of 7.. it was posted to MSDN at the end of august.

We got our license keys a few weeks ago at my office.. and a number of us have installed windows 7 professional on our workstations.

Ok so I installed it on Windows XP and the performance while significantly better than an aging 8800gt was not what I expected.

I just tested EVE Online which is really the only game I play. Running 4 EVE clients at the same time resulted in 20-30 fps, which was kind of disappointing (max settings, 1920x1200).

My SSD arrived yesterday and I installed Windows 7 on it. EVE doesn't run higher than 60fps, the game tops it at 60. So I was able to run 4 clients at the same time @ 60 fps which is very impressive. I was expecting a drop in performance by the time I started the last client but the card had no issues with it.

A Corsair 32Gb SSD and an upgrade from an 8800gt to 5870 is probably the biggest jump in performance of a computer I've ever experienced.

Conclusion: Don't run 5870 on Windows XP. The card will run much faster on Windows 7 (I suspect the same goes for Vista).

I think it's time for you guys to put that dog to sleep and move on. Vista is not that bad and if you buy it now you get the free up grade to w7 from the egg.

IMO keep testing XP. They seem to have fixed most things in 7 but legacy/old school is still fun, i.e. old cars or NES/SNES emus.

Less than stellar rigs or laptops will probably use XP if it's already on there, they usually aren't scrap just older. Pop in a 5870? Probably not. 5770? Maybe.

And HTPCs, if XP becomes basically free and can play Blu-Ray/media, why not?

Because it seems as though AMD isn't going to support windows XP with drivers for the 5870.

I'm running in on XP, and there are already many issues that i'm experiencing in certain games, such as the witcher or GTAIV where there is strange flickering and texture tearing.

o/ Are you sure "interval one " (v-sync) is not enabled at eve settings ?It looks like enabled but i would keep it ,it helps for overheating problem at stations while docked .
So my questions ,how many screens are you using? Did you try 3 screens?Any problem ?Clients full screen or windowed ?Any problem if you want to use 3 screens with 3 clients at fullscreen ?
Are you mining ?

O7 you're right I am pretty sure it's vsync, which is totally fine by me. I have only tried 1 monitor setup so far, thinking about going for more monitors.

I am part of a 0.0 alliance often times I run 3 clients at the same time, empire trade alt, sub cap pilot and a dread pilot on standby for a hot drop. Most of all I would like to Fraps big fleet battles in their full beauty ;)

the best way I've been able to stress test the card is by running as many clients as I can.

the BLACKTCC6 user rolled me for that gigabyte board he sold here. $135 kissed.

just warning before he burns someone else. I apparently don't have enough posts to lay this in the FS thread so I put it here. I tried posting it elsewhere but my thread was locked and I see this guy still has an account.

Hmm eve, sirmo? Nah you can't be... Err wait given the rest of this thread damn I guess you could very well be but nah I still don't think so.

PM one of the FS/FT mods. They should be able to help you.

Umm maybe I am missing something but are you sure you got the right guy?

I don't even see a FS thread in his post history.

Um yeah, I just looked at your post history. You need to edit your post man, your accusing the wrong guy. The OP of this thread is not the guy who was selling the gigabyte board. Yes he made a post in here but again he is not the OP. You really need to fix that error on your part and contact a mod if your having problems with a sale here. This is not the way to go about resolving your problem at all.

XP Pro x64 is Server 2003 x64 with an the Luna theme.

Regardless... why are we even talking about XP? If your on this forum you're an enthusiast, and enthusiasts are running Windows 7 because it kicks ass in every conceivable way. :p

This man speaks the truth, W7 64 FTW!

While I don't have Windows 7 like I did Vista I find no compelling reason to use it as a main OS over my Windows XP Performance Edition July 2009.

In the years to come when SSD's become more mainstream (and if W7 SSD performance is as good as it claims) my stance may change or if DirectX11 doesn't flop like DX10 did, but until then no thanks.
