MW2, No Dedicated Servers, PB, 9v9 limit, leaning, etc etc

Well I'm not sure what the exact sales numbers breakdown for cod4 and 5 are but I know the number of units sold on the PC were respectable. Yes it's easier for them to focus dev time on the console but the pc is also a profit center and one strong enough not to just dismiss, they know this, they aren't stupid by a country mile. The pc variant of this game is good for at least 1 million units. So yes the 360 might sell 4mill and the ps3 will sell 2.5 (approx numbers) but that extra 1 million units @ 60 bucks per wunit with NO ROYALITIES to pay to fucking micosoft or sony is appealing. You don't just toss 60million or so dollars into the toliet because you don't wanna add dedicated server support to a game series and engine thats completely capable of having it and has had it FOR YEARS.

The only way this even remotely makes any sense from a business sense is for some executive at activision/blizzard to have figured the loses from some pissed off pc gamers hwo wont buy it for pc will somehow not equate to the losses they incur from piracy. Also they probably figure long term they stand to gain ALOT with their own closed network to run and update games with in the future. This is is course speculation but I think it makes sense.

Bottom line is I think they severly underestimated the back lash this would cause and it's gonna bite them in the ass harder than they tought. That is unless someone over there wakes up and reverses this fucktarded decision. I hope.

WoW! What a dissapointment! I was so looking foward to this game. Was even thinking of preordering it, but now, no way no how. I will be visiting this forum/thread and the CODMW2 forums to watch the unbelievable backlash on the tenth. This should be EPIC.

Man, talk about taking the wind out of your sails...

:(

Online petitions do nothing. In the years I have been on the internet, I have never been presented with any kind of evidence that even the people they are directed to even see or care about them, rather then them even causing any sort of change. And I have signed many of them. But no more. But hey, if ya want to...go ahead and sign it.

i'd say you're right on how this came to be, it's obviously the result of a cost/benefit analysis. i disagree however on the backlash. i doubt this will have much impact on them financially. just speculation of course, time will tell.

i'll be part of the PC gamer group that helps perpetuate the process because to me it's still worth $60 for what i consider an awesome SP and a broken MP, and i refuse to pirate. i don't like the route they're taking, but at the end of the day it's about having fun and i'm sure i'll still have $60 worth of fun just playing the SP. the only way they'll lose my business is if i'm let down by the prior release and feel i didn't get my money's worth. so far all COD games have delivered for me.

Well its your money but i would not drop that kind of money on a 5 hour campaign mode and a broken MP game. This smells "rent" title to me instead of buying it.

Best to rent it out because i guarante you will be finished with this game in a week. £60 for 1 weeks worth of fun?

I think that IW and Activision have just stepped into a hornets nest with this announcement. After finding huge numbers of petitions that have over 65,000 signatures you will see some response from IW, I think that they still care about the gamer and not just about the money. But who knows.

IMO if they are cutting dedicated server support it will cripple this game because dedicated server support is just necessary for the continued support of a game. It would be like taking LAN out of an RTS.....oh wait.

Activision seems to be the publisher that is behind the developers who make boneheaded choices. So really is it the devs or Activision.

Looks like they really want to push away PC gaming. They use the loss of profits due to piracy to push their agenda.

If that's what they want......

First nfs shift with no dedicated servers, than OPF2 now this? so every console port wil not have dedicated servers?

They will until they get the hint that we're not buying games without dedicated servers. Use your wallet to tell them how you feel. Next time a good multiplayer shooter, with dedicated servers is released, I guarantee that there will be a lot of hungry PC gamers eager to give it a try. Let the sales speak for themselves.

haha

DICE backs dedicated servers

Following confirmation from Infinity Ward that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on PC will not feature support for dedicated servers, DICE executive producer KM Troedsson has backed dedicated servers.

"Dedicated servers FTW. What ever secures a better online experience is a given for us," Tweeted Troedsson.

Interesting that DICE feels dedicated servers result in a "better online experience," an opinion obviously not shared by Infinity Ward.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is scheduled for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on March 5, 2010.

Awesome! As good as Bad Company 2 looks I can't wait for BF3 for PC....with dedicated servers!

Holy shit, they must have seen the huge dent in canceled pre-orders. Otherwise I don't think they would have given a shit. Its all about the $$$ after all.

What is really funny about all of this is the petition page itself. Look at the total signed page here. Now hit refresh on your web browser ever couple seconds. LMFAO, the numbers on the petition is growing by atleast 2-3 people a second. I bet there will be 100,000 people by tomorrow. That's 6 million dollars in potential lost revenue!!!

What Infinity Ward has to realize is that the petition isn't even the entire sum of people who WILL NOT PURCHASE IT. These people tell their friends, who tell their friends, etc. Not to mention how quickly this news has spread with a simple google search to confirm it on 50 thousand websites already.

The news is getting a lot of viewage from digg. Already number 4 in the top last 24 hours with over 720 comments. I'm pretty sure the petition will reach 100k soon.

ouch! luckily I'm not a big cod fanboy and can live without it but I hope this is not the direction PC gaming is going
and the piracy excuse is so dumb, this and most PC games are dominated by online play, I doubt many are settling with pirated versions with very limited or no online capability

more like PR damage control. They've already built this online matchmaking system and no way are they going to dump it. All he said is that, they will not "ignore" our comments and that all those asshats at infitity ward will read it. That doesn't mean much. Seriously, do you guys think infinityward did not anticipate an outrage?

I think they expected some backlash, just not one this scale.

I said we might have progress. That reply is better than nothing.

Yes they expected backlash just not of this magnitude. They are getting a lot of negative publicity and that negativity costs money. My guess is they will give us dedicated server capability and also keep their bullshit iwnet in tact for co op, for cd key verification and for any nub who wants matchmaking. That's my guess. Its not as if is difficult or time consuming since the code exists from cod 4.

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ THAT IS AWESOME.

They have this petition on every possible viral media medium possible.

even though it's unlikely, i'm crossing my fingers for this. it is fun to refresh the petition page and watch how quickly it's gaining signatures...even if it is an exercise in futility.

I have heard that many times in this thread. If IW takes out dedicated servers and everyone feels they deserve to pirate it because they didn't get their way, then how the hell does this make their argument about piracy any less true?

Yeah I'm glad they said SOMETHING but his response was

fourzerotwo: Definitely made a big wave, and the response will not be ignored. I'll ensure everyone at IW sees the petitions and responses to it.

Which means almost nothing to me. Making sure they SEE it? Pssh whatever.

Exactly. Pirating because they didn't put in dedicated servers is ridiculous. If they don't put them back in (via patch or otherwise), then this game will be in the bargain bin soon enough. I'll pay $15 or less for the single player campaign. $15 is a movie ticket and a bag of popcorn. As steep as $60 is, I still would have paid it for the multiplayer and single player... but not anymore.

Furthermore, I will only re-instate my pre-order if an official word comes out regarding adding the dedicated servers back in. Otherwise I will wait to purchase it until they do or it becomes bargain bin, whichever comes first.

Lol, waiting on a cod game to become bargain bin? Has cod4 even dropped its 49.99 pc price yet?

As I said, MW2 most likely will drop in price if the multiplayer sucks. Multiplayer with its required server side authentication is what sells most games nowadays. Otherwise word spreads about shitty multiplayer, but a semi amusing albeit short singleplayer, and a large majority of people will pirate it. Multiplayer IS REPLAY VALUE, it makes the price justified.
If you don't have a decent multiplayer, you have to have a monumentally epic single player campaign.

I'm betting if this fiasco gets big enough, there will be a patch about a month after release to allow dedicated servers (the biggest issue) while retaining the match making. Most likely there will be 2 different menu items with Match making similar to an "Instant Action" or something. I doubt any of the other issues will be addressed for atleast 6 months.

Yup and i cant see the single player being more than 5 hours long. if teh single player of this game was as immense and long as mass effect than its worth $60

Hope Battlefield: Bad Company 2 PC will be great.

Maybe BF3 with COD 4 guns (tweaked for realism) and all the tanks, planes and everything you want.

And dedicated servers....

I'll believe it when i have the game in my hands. This is great move by Dice to kick IW in the nuts after this disaster, but who knows what can happen in next 3-4 months. Crazy how i can't believe what anybody says anymore, what the hell happened to this world :D

If this petition actually works and demand goes down. Although I think we all know the 360 and PS3 versions will probably sell enough to justify it.

Anyways, could they open up the dedicated server option down the line?

This is honestly unbelievable, and history making.

I mean its the PC, the PC multiplayer is dedicated servers. That's all I've known.

Were they talking about taking Prone out?

Like laying down, prone? Or am I missing something?
