i have a habit of doing this so far:

(1998) PS1: Final Fantasy 7, Armored Core Series
(2004?) PS2: Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, Armored Core Series
(2007) Xbox 360: Armored Core 4

after finishing the games i would sell them before the price of the console gets too low lol

next up when i get the money is PS3: Final Fantasy 13 + Armored Core For Answer

All of my consoles I bought primarily for a single game, but I keep them because there are always others I want to play:

PS1 - FF7
PS2 - AC2
Gamecube - Metroid Prime
Xbox - Mech Assault
Wii - Twilight Princess
PS3 - FFXIII (I bought it before it was announced for the 360 as well because I wanted the BC version and a blu-ray player)
360 - Mass Effect (When they were insisting it would not come out on the PC, doesn't bother me though because it gets much more use than my other systems)

Well, I honestly bought a PS3 specifically to make sure I secured next-gen Ratchet & Clank and Jack & Daxter titles, however knowing there would be many games I wanted besides those.

Gamecube - Resident Evil 4 / RE 1 Remake

Kept the system but didnt play it outside of those 2 games.

PS2 for FF-X

I'll get a PS3 or 360 when FF13 comes out. Depends on if one gets better graphics than the other. Wish they kept PS2 backwards compatibility though.

N64 - Killer Instinct Gold.

Also the last console I ever bought. Probably the last I ever will.

PS1 - Final Fantasy 7

I was about 12 at the time and had already bought FF7 before I had the PS1. I'd only saved enough for the game and then for the PS1 itself (I had the game first because I'd reserved it to get a free t-shirt!). What I didn't account for was a memory card. So when I first started, I got to the fucking GOLDEN SAUCER by leaving it on 24/7 and having it propped up on books. Then, I get home from school one day and turn the tv on in anticipation. As the picture is fading in, I hear the general FF theme music, NOT Golden Saucer music. When the picture comes in completely, I'm at the title menu where the credits are popping up on screen. My mom had somehow reset the system. If that had happened now, at 24 years old, I probably wouldn't play it again for a few months. At 12 years old, though, I happily started again and eventually got that memory card.

PS1 - Crash Bandicoot
PS2 - Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
PS3 - Gran Turismo 5 (it will eventually get here)

PSP - just for mobile gaming and movies. Nothin in particular.

I was inches away from buying a 360 solely for Gears of War, but then got it on PC when I heard it was coming to the platform.
I am in the same situation again for Forza 3. Right now I kind want to buy a 360 and play Forza 3 to hold me over til march.

I bought a PS1 specifically for Final Fantasy VII, but since then I've adopted some rules on what it takes for me to take the plunge on a new console. With my most recent console purchase (PS3), I've refined it down to the following 2 requirements.

-Console must cost less than $300US
-Console must have at least 3, exclusive, "must-play" games.

I bought a PS3 for WipEout HD, and the next WipEout game, whenever they get around to releasing it. I like HD, but owning a PSP I'd already played most of the tracks in WipEout Pulse. The Fury add-on was a nice bonus for me, but the new play modes are not my favorite; I guess I'm too much of a purist. I've played just about every version of WipEout available since release, from original Playstation to PC and Saturn. Never owned a N64, but I wasn't all that impressed with WipEout 64 anyway.

Sadly I didn't get a launch PS3, as there are still many PS2 titles I'd like to play I missed while I was an Xbox owner. I bought the Xbox for Panzer Dragoon Orta and Beyond Good and Evil. I, unlike the rest of the Xbox owning population, bought Halo but rarely played it. I've always felt PC was far better suited to FPS.

At the moment I'm very happy with the PS3 purchase between WipEout HD / Fury, Valkyria Chronicles, Little Big Planet (doesn't get much play but I love just knowing it's there as an option), Uncharted, Armored Core 4, Armored Core For Answer, and my latest purchase -- Demon's Souls.

That's a good idea. I bought the 360 only to sell it a month or so later b/c I ended up not really playing the games I thought would be fun (GTA4, GoW, ME). I mean, I've been more than happy playing SC/D2/TF2/L4D on the PC as it is so yeah probably my last "impulse" buy.

The Wii I've only really played for Twilight Princess and Galaxy. I haven't finished either of those, so I haven't sold my Wii yet.

I honestly just bought the ps3 for bluray but I would have ended up buying one for gran turismo 5. 360 was solely for GoW now that I think about it.

PS1 - Final Fantasy 7
PS2 - didnt buy for a particular game
PS3 - Star Wars Force Unleashed, InFamous
Xbox 360 - Gears of War 2

Eternal Darkness was super awesome.

Snes - Super Mario World
Genesis - Mortal Kombat 2
Saturn - Virtua Fighter 2
N64 - Super Mario 64
Playstation - Final Fantasy 7
Playstation 2 - GTA 3
Playstation 3 - Call of Duty 4

PS1 - Final Fantasy VII - Was at the mall, saw it was FFVII release day. Wasn't a PS gamer yet, so had no idea tehre even was a PS FF. Only had a little cash on me, so bought the game, and mail-ordered a PS the next day. Had to stare at the game for a week before being able to play it.

TurboDuo - Cosmic Fantasy 2.

Saturn - Albert Oddysey/Magic Knight Rayearth/Panzer DDragoon Saga

SegaCD - Lunar 1 and 2

Have a ton of other systems, but not bought for a particular game.

Sega Genesis : Sonic the Hedgehog
N64 : Diddy Kong Racing / mario 64
Gamecube : Resident Evil 4
Dreamcast : Blue Stinger / Sonic / Jet Set Radio - i'm pretty sure these were all out when i bought it.

I bought xbox and xbox 360 both on day 1, but I don't think there was ever really a single game I had to have.

Nintendo DS for the Pokemon games, sadly enough they're fun and captivating. Take the bore out of the frequent 8 hour plane rides.

PS3: MGS 4
PS2: MGS 2/3
Xbox: Halo (even had the green halo edition) as well as Ninja Gaiden
N64: Goldeneye

edit: I guess the reason I never owned a 360 was because there were never any must have games for the platform IMO.

WII: super mario galaxy and metroid 3 and zelda
N64: Goldeneye and zelda
PS3: MGS 4 (got the lauch bundle at midnight) :)
PS2: Gran Tursimo
PS1: FF7
DC: Marvel vs capcom
saturn: nights

never owned either xbox, dont really care to either, halo was meh to me

my pc supplements everything else

Actually bought Formula 1 Championship Edition for the PS3 about a year before purchasing the console assuming I'd buy it eventually. Was lucky enough to get the Best Buy MGS4+Killzone 2 bundle so it netted three great games and a solid console. So glad I pulled the trigger!

xbox 360 for gears of war then gave it (console, game, wireless adapter, hd dvd drive) away to my brother in law.

I bought the GameCube and Wii for Mario Kart. I bought both of them before the games were even announced...but I just had a feeling that it was inevitable. In the case of the Wii, it's really the only game I've ever played much of.
I actually bought both the PS2 and PS2 after Tekken was announced. In the case of the PS2 there was more to it, but with the PS3 I bought a launch system when Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection was announced. I had the money and I figured that there would be some other decent games, too.

Never. I simply find friends and family who buy the consoles and then spend an exorbitant amount of time playing the games on them. I've done it with numerous PS3 exclusive titles already.

master sytem - Phantasy Star
Sega CD - Lunar
DreamCast - Phantasy Star Online
Gcube - Fire emblem
Wii - Fire emblem

bought 100% for that 1 game.

PC - Quake 3 (it counts!)
SNES - Final Fantasy 6
PS1 - Final Fantasy 7
PS2 - Can't remember why
Xbox 360 - Mass Effect, Rock Band, GTA IV

xbox 360, because I really thought it would be the HTPC I wanted. It's close, but no chicken'n gravey.

N64 for Conker's Bad Fur Day. I dont really think this counts through given that by the time I bought the system the N64 I bought for $25 used and Conker was only $10 brand new from TRS.

I bought an XB 360 because I wanted to play GTA IV w/o having to deal with crappy ports to the PC. Although TBH, I wouldn't have bought it at all if I wasn't able to hack the console and download/burn the games myself. Even at this point the only games I have which I actually own (aside from XBLA games, of which I own a lot) is GH 3, because I needed both the game and guitar to play, and I was able to make it into a gift for my sister back when I lived at home.

Again, I bought the 360 used for $300 including the 20 GB HDD. I hacked in a 120 GB drive for the $50 the HDD itself cost, so I think I got my money's worth out of it.

Nintendo DSi - Technically bought for GTA: Chinatown Wars but I wouldn't have bothered at all if I didn't already know how easy and cheap flashcarts were to buy and use. This is another system where I don't own any games for it at all aside from the few Nintendo store games I have.

Ps2 Ace Combat 4
Ps3 ..well, I became a PlayStation person.

Pretty much built my PC for ArmA II.

NES: Super Mario Bros
Genesis: Altered Beast (I suppose. we were 7 back then, just wanted the system really.)
Turbo Grafx-16: Bonk's Revenge
SNES: TMNT IV

Everything below, I bought myself:
PS1: FF VII, Resident Evil 2
Dreamcast: Jet Set Radio (So many good games on this system, so many people missed out...)
PS2: Ridge Racer 5
GC: Rogue Squadron 4, sold, then bought again with Metroid Prime
Xbox: Ninja Gaiden (150 hrs, sold shortly after the embarrassment that is Halo 2)
X360: Ridge Racer 6 (bought, played, sold launch unit)
Wii: Zelda TP, Mario Galaxy

Currently own
NES, PS2, Wii, PC

+1 to the guy that actually bought a TurboDuo
I envied you soooo much, in 1993. :) If I only had $299.99 back then, haha

N64 - Mortal Kombat Trilogy, KI Gold
PS1 - FF9
Dreamcast - Soul Calibur, Sonic
PS2 - GTA3, FFX
Xbox - Crimson Skies, online multiplayer (XBL)

360 - no specific title

PS3 - Blu Ray playback

Wii: Dead Space Extraction
unfortunately the Wii was insanely loud while trying to play that game so I returned it.

Gamecube: Resident Evil 0-4
I just made this purchase last week. lol

saturn: shining force 3
I may be the only one but I was terribly disappointed in this game compared to SF2. I absolutely loved that one and could never get into 3.

Nes - Super Mario Bros. 1/2/3/Duck Hunt
Snes - Super Mario World
N64 - Super Mario 64
GC - Mario Sunshine (Boy, was that a mistake. At least SSX Tricky kicked ass)
Dreamcast - Soul Caliber
XBOX - Halo (The original, combined with all the other games, it was well worth it)
XBOX360 - Nothing in particular, great purchase tho.
