iPhone: Missing calls/texts since upgrading to 3.1

My wife and I both have the iPhone 3G 16gb. Since the upgrade to 3.1 (MMS upgrade) we both have the strangest problem.

At anytime of day, our phone basically loses connection to the AT&T 3G network. I cannot make/receive calls (people calling me says it rings and rings and eventually goes to voicemail) and text either won't go out or come in. This is a BIG problem as I work on-call for my IT department and CANNOT miss calls. I don't even know when it is happening, only until I try to make a call and it doesn't work. This is UNACCEPTABLE!

I have to restart the phone for the network to connect again.

I have done some reading and found this to be a very wide spread issue. What the hell is going on with the iPhone and AT&T?

Is there a "fix" coming in from Apple soon?

This is also going on with my wife's iPhone as well, same issues to the teeth.

If you have this problem, what have you done to resolve it? I have seen that AT&T might exchange your device for a brand new device. Is this true? Any input is greatly appreciated!

That's really weird this is happening on both phones? 3.1.2 was released a few days ago, you could try upgrading both to that and see if that fixes your problem.

I get that too but then again I have mine jailbroken so I am not so sure its the phone lol...

I had the same issue about not receiving calls when I had 3.1. I just upgraded to 3.1.2 a few days ago so I'll have to see if it improved and check back in.

I had the same issue on my 3G. Also had it where it would look like I had signal, but as soon as I try to make a call, it showed zero signal and it took a restart to bring it back. Then I look and it registered my attempts to call out as a missed calls.

I'd give anything for Verizon to get the iPhone. I'd take the hit and switch over in a heartbeat!

3.1 is a nightmare, I am a delivery driver and call all my customers prior to arriving.

Biggest things are loss of signal, fixable with a respring and not waking up from sleep requiring holding home and power button for 10sec and then over a minute restart ~,~

3.1.2 fixes both of these and probably some other things I haven't noticed yet, also seems a tad bit snappier but I haven't installed intelliscreen yet.

3.0.1 hasn't been too much trouble, so I guess I'm going to stick with that. Plus, 3.1 doesn't seem to have much that's new. There's only one thing I want from 3.1, and that's the ability to paste phone numbers into the phone app and dial it.

It's a function I had back in the PalmOS days, as well as Windows Mobile. So why did it take so long for the iPhone to get it? :p

Because Apple is innovating. And you never used it on Palm or WM until they could have stolen it from Apple. :p

LOL.

I find it funny also that in the mobile market, the situation is flipped - Apple's iPhone/iPod is more popular, and their interface is more familiar. I found myself struggling to get used to the Zune HD's GUI, as well as their Zune software. I am still confused as to how the Zune software works!

What happened to drag and drop files? :(

I like my 3.0.1 as well... And I do jb - I gotta have Backgrounder and SBSettings at minimum!

This actually sounds like pretty typical AT&T function. My Sony/Ericsson w810i has these problems and it requires a restart to fix them. Odd that it just recently started happening to you, I've always had this issue with them.

I updated to 3.1.2 on Monday 10/12/09. Yesterday (10/13), I had a call not ring the phone - the caller said the line rang five times then went to voicemail. This is the first time I'm aware of this having happened since I got an iPhone; hopefully this isn't a new, chronic problem...

i had this problem on my 3g since 3.0, i found the only way to get the phone to function was to completely wipe it and restore fresh.

I have seen this sleep "problem" on my iphone 3gs since the 3.1.2 patch, so I wouldn't hold your breath. I have also noticed the "hand off" from 3G to Wifi is sometimes problematic, resulting in no signal at all on 3G or Wifi.. a hard-reset is the only thing I can do to remedy this..

I don't have the missing calls/texts problem but I do have a different issue since moving to 3.1.2.

I take the DC metro to work. In the tunnels there is no AT&T signal due to Verizon and their finally expired contract which gave them a monopoly in the tunnels. After coming out of the metro station my iPhone 3G will get ZERO signal. It just sits there on "No Service". No 3G signal and No Edge signal. Before 3.1.2 I would pick up signal within about 10-15 seconds of leaving the station.

I have a Blackberry through work which is also on the AT&T network. The Blackberry is Edge only and it picks up the network as soon as I get out of the metro station.

The iPhone just sits there and stares at me. If I manually force it to Edge it will take about 30-60 seconds and finds full strength Edge. Swapping back to 3G goes back to "No Service". After 5-10 minutes the iPhone will finally grab a 3G signal again.

Its like Apple broke the iPhones ability to easily bounce between 3G and Edge. This problem happens to me when I leave work too so it has nothing to do with the location.

How long is your ride? You could maybe enable/disable airplane mode when you get off the train? I'd imagine that would make it search again.

Actually, doesn't searching for a signal (and not finding it) strain the battery quite a bit? I've seen that on my old Blackjack. You could enable airplane before you get in the tunnel.

Going Airplane Mode and back again does make the phone search but it finds nothing. Still get the "No Service" message. Ride is about 20 minutes without signal.

Turns out it was an AT&T issue. It was in the news yesterday afternoon. In both metro stops I get off on, AT&T, T-Mobile, and others have been interfering with cell signals while they install new antennas in order to get signal down to the platforms. Today they turned them on so I didn't have the issue. Now I technically get cellular signal at some of the platforms but not in the tunnels.
