Getting a 15" MBP soon, few questions.

When I saw it had 2GB's of RAM, it wasn't what I was looking for because I wanted 4GB's. But I saw how cheap it was to upgrade and it's already $400 dollars off or so, it's not a bad deal what so ever. I read about Apple's refurbish policy I guess... Seems like there's nothing wrong once they inspect and there is already one year of Applecare that comes along with it. So I might go ahead and order a refurb hopefully tomorrow!
Nice! I bought the exact same model two months ago. It was impossible to distinguish it from a new one. Added 4GB RAM + 320GB 7200RPM drive which cost about $160 from the Egg. I still paid over $300 less than buying the base model new. Best lappy I've ever used. Have fun!! :)

This is so frustrating!! I have to wait for one check to go through another day and I can order =[

But the anticipation is killing me now haha.

Trust me wait it out.. I bought one MacBook about 2-3 years ago with a credit card payment plan.. I'm kicking myself to this day.

Seriously.. don't do it.

So pumped!! Finally ordered the refurb MBP and got next day airrrrrrrr =]

Will post up again once I get on the Mac!

You wont regret it! Recieved my refurb MBP two days ago and loving it!

Can I first say how disappointed I am right now..

I get the computer, turn it on and it works fine. I go to install updates and it freezes for legit 30 minutes on the install script. I shut off the computer and turn it back on.. Now it's stuck on the grey Apple screen. What the hell is going on?

Turn it off, then power on while holding down the Option key. You should see the Mac's hard drive icon. Click on it and see if you can boot up to the desktop. Let us know...

Yeah, that's a problem if you turn it off or mess with it when it's updating = you'll need to reinstall the OS. I learned about that the hard way when I accidentally closed the lid on mine while it was updating...it was a MacBook Air too which is super slow to install anything. Needless to say I wasted another 3-4 hrs with the re-installation...

I seem to remember having an update installation hang on me. I was able to just power it off and start it back up fine. Since you just got it though a fresh install won't hurt anything and may be the easiest way to solve the problem.

Alright I'm going for the fresh install... Will post up again if I have any problems or other questions, thanks for all of your help so far guys!

Alright!! I just re-installed and everything seems fine to me =] I'm already going to install Adium and I'm thinking about Firefox too, but Safari 4 runs pretty good too.. SO PUMPED!!

Reminds me of when I first got mine, new toys are awesome.

If you go for Firefox, try an optimized build. The OS X version of Firefox sometimes feels like an afterthought, though Mozilla is making strides in that department. 3.7 and especially 4.0 ought to be excellent.

Alternatively, you might like Camino, which uses Gecko just like Firefox, but is made from the ground up for OS X.

+1 on Firefox. 3.5.3 works pretty well in OS X. Looking forward to 4.0. Safari always feels sluggish to me. I should try Camino.

I am seriously pumped, like wow.. Here's my new desktop! And I'm also looking through some threads already on some programs I could use, I need some movies... haha.

Congrats....I remember the feeling when I got my first MacBook...it was lovely!

Another question for you guys haha. I have my iTunes on my old computer and all the music I deleted from it that I didn't want, my playlist had all the songs I want and now I don't want to reformat my iPod because I want that music still, just want to be at where it left off. I tried to export the playlists from my Windows iTunes and add into the OS X iTunes, but it's missing a few songs and the ones I really like too. Is there any way to swap them over to my Mac now? I do not want to go through 6,000 songs and delete the ones I didn't want to sync onto my iPod.

You can copy over the entire consolidated music folder. It's time consuming to compile and transfer, but if you want total library preservation, it's worth it.

This guide's a little bit dated, but the basics should still apply. Basically, you're going to consolidate your music files on your Windows install of iTunes and transfer them somehow to your Mac. This is probably best done with an external hard drive.

I did move all of my music in Windows onto a backup drive and then I added it into OS X, but I had songs in folders and RAR's for Album's and OS X didn't pick up on that, so now all of my organized music is now in one bulk folder. I added that bulk into iTunes but now I just want the music from Windows in OS X.

.:Edit:.

I just looked at the guide, didn't notice there was a link there haha, but I'm on my way to the gym and once I come back I will try the guide out and hopefully it will be a success!

Ok I just tried the tutorial but I can't find out the step with find & replace. I have all my music in one folder that I transferred from my other computer. And when it says to locate from the Windows path to the OS X path, I just don't understand. Can any one help me out?

It's telling you to change the file paths in the XML file from the Windows format (C:\program files\whatever, for example) to the OS X format (Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Music/iTunes, for example.)

^^ That helped a whole lot. I didn't understand the paths and how the Mac format goes yet, but thanks for explaining to me man. My iTunes is back to normal!!!!!!

Again a big thank you to everyone who was able to help answer any of my questions! If I have any more questions or need help I will post in here. Thankssssssssss,

-Matt.

Hey everyone.. Back again! Haha, well this is really bugging me. Sometimes when I'm going through web pages or if I'm just looking through folders to get to a file, my icons start to change in size. As if I'm playing with the scroll option to change the size. I use two fingers sometimes when using the trackpad, but this is really annoying. Same thing happened with the items on my desktop, I was going to move a file and the sizes of all my icons went to 120x120. Is there a way to fix this?

You probably used the pinch to zoom gesture. Go to System Preferences → Trackpad to adjust or disable it.

To fix it, you can either pinch zoom out, or Command-click, two-finger tap, or right-click on the desktop, select Show View Options, and adjust the icon size using the slider at the very top.

That's what I was thinking. Sometimes I'll accidentally resize my icons in a finder window, because I leave my thumb in the bottom left hand corner, for clicking, and if my thumb is down, and I drag my index finger on the pad, even a little, it sometimes thinks I'm doing a pinch/zoom and resizes my icons!

It can be quite annoying, but at least they give you the option to disable it.

I know you were worried about Powerpoint, etc. Microsoft office has 2008 and you also have the Apple iWork alternative. I don't think you will be disappointed. It's a great machine (I have one).

Hey guys, back again. Haha, I want to create a RAR file and compress some stuff that I've got, I can't find an app that would do that though, only to extract other RAR's. Google is not my friend right now either..

You don't need a separate app. OS X does it natively. Select all the files you want to compress, right-click/two finger-click/Command-click and select Compress Files. Granted, this will give you a ZIP instead of a RAR file, but is RAR really that important? If so, you can try SimplyRAR, but I wouldn't sweat the difference.
