iPods Make You A Loser

People don't compete to have fun. They compete to win. The more elite you are, the more true this becomes and the more tight-ass rules you have to follow.

I thought the same thing, I laughed a bit when she is rated in the "elite" class but claims she is just there to have fun. You are either there to race and as such in the "elite' group and need to know and adhere to every rule, or you are there to have fun and not rated in the elite class.

I still don't understand why an ipod or something called a pacing device is bad for running? Isn't the point of a marathon to do it in the fastest time possible? What does listening to music or any other audible have to do with that? Is it a mental thing? I don't run, so I don't know.

Am I the only one here that clicked on the article, scrolled down and stopped to look at her pic?

She's hot...and she's got a tat that I'd love to suck on.

Yeah, but to quote Ron White: "You can't fix stupid!"

Race photos showed Goebel with an iPod tucked into the waistband of her shorts and she admitted using the device in violation of a USA Track and Field rule that applied only to elite runners in the Lakefront Marathon. Runners competing for USATF championships and or cash prizes are not allowed to use electronic devices.

Hmm, I wonder if I'll also be disqualified for having hearing aids ;-)

Which, by the way, is also a Bluetooth receiver and can pick up sounds from another Bluetooth-enabled device such as my iPhone.

And if I told all the girls I've been with that they were losers for owning iPods, I'd be a much unhappier man right now.

Speaking of which, I love my 30GB iPod Video, which has outlasted all my friends' MP3 players and is still going strong after ~3 years of heavy use. And I am by no means an Apple fanb0y.

Finally, this is a dumb thread title, IMHO.

Why would anyone want to take up running as a sport... It's got to be the most boring fucking thing you can do with your spare time.

But yeah - using an iPod probably gives you an unfair advantage. Distracts you from how shitty your sport of choice is, and how you'd rather be throwing a football :)

What an educated comment.

Sugar is fine, it's a good source of quickly digestible carb for endurance events. It's a combination of preference and what the stomach is happy with without causing... issues. I'm not saying I, or that anyone should, eliminate carbs/sugar, just that I manage them separately.

Nah, I agree completely, and it's cool. I'm going to have to look up the stuff you were mentioning though, as I've never heard of it...or at least I don't recall hearing of it.

Something tells me of this was an iRiver or a Zune, it wouldn't have been reported here /applehaters

Because it might be Brawndo and electrolytes are what you need?

The non-stationed water or Gatorade could have, oh... a caffeinated energy drink put in there, liquefied pain relievers, etc. Too easy for cheaters to cheat.

Sorry for my miss-reading of this article that I commented on before :D

But how the hell can you "tune in" to an iPod? She got a radio receiver implanted in her brain or something? Sorry guys, could not resist!!! ;)

Cute gal. What a shame she got screwed by a stupid rule.

Not neccessarily ignorant of technology. You'll be surprised how many old phrases we still use today.

Cablemodem? Modem means modulator/demodulator. It implies analog data transfer.
Actually it does not: See wiki

The woman knew the rules, and chose to violate them, and now is whining about being caught. Gimme a break.

I completely agree. People contending for the top spots should be smart enough to check the rules prior to race day.

Of course it wouldn't be posted. Regardless, if you buy/don't buy any gadget for status purposes, I'd say you're a bigger loser than anyone.

Of course we all know that, right? ;)

What are you trying to show me? Cablemodems do not need to demodulate data. Just as that Wiki page you linked to me said.

Cable broadband is digital modulation, or direct modulation. There is no digital to analog conversion.

As for the safety rules, well I'm a little torn on that. Marathons are usually held on closed streets. If a car was to plow into marathon runners, I don't think it'll make a difference whether you're wearing a PMP or not.
