The World’s Best and Worst Places To Live

Typically the top bracket of developed countries are quite close.

For instance, this year Norway's index is 0.971, the US is 0.956, and the UK (#21) is 0.947. For some comparison, Lebanon is #83 and the last "high development" country, with an index of 0.803.

Data is available here from UN Development Program: http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/
I bet the US has even higher variance within it's boarders. For instance, Detroit would get a completely different rating than Seattle.

debt is higher*. Sorry, it's 2am.

And, please, stop with the BS stereo typing. You know it's the media that made Bush look bad, but of course, you have to blame it on someone...

Bush did that all on his own. (Well maybe he had a little help from Cheney).

You actually think that your country is ranked lower because of your current president? If anything to world thinks higher of the United States because of him. It's your moron right wing and republican loud mouths that disgrace your country now, not including that ape of a moron that was in office before for 2 terms.

Keep drinking that koolaid....

The reason Obama is liked by the elites over in Europe is because Obama is weak & will do what they want him to.

Awwww how cute, the tired koolaid bit! If every thread is going to be derailed into the realm of politics, can you at least get your own talking points and insults please?

So can we move the UN to NIger now so that they can focus and be at the heart of the problem? Wonder how many of these world leaders would resign from their post.

sweet, I am from Iceland and we are number 3. We are originally from Norway since we are descended from the Vikings.

It's called co-operating... and it's this kind of mentality that's justifies the rest of the worlds opinion on your country. The United States isn't the only country in the world, you are part of a United group of countries all working to better the world. Learn some humility.

I notice there is no Zimbabwe on the list. I would imagine that country is one of the bottom-scrapers.

This is soooo true as of late! hahaha...

Hey, it's true due to (insert your person to blame here).
Darn Presidents and everything the indirectly affect, from global warming to rats in the basement. It's all their fault.

Can we go a week without some political bashing crap?

I think the US has a much greater immigrant population then Germany. 12.9% is really low balling it because we have upwards of 20 million undocumented aliens here. That would really bring us to almost 20%.

I'm just curious...how can you be so sure it's 20 million if they're undocumented? I'm not saying there aren't a lot of illegal immigrants here - that's obvious - but how can you get an exact number and expect it to be accurate?

I didn't mean to be so harsh, it's just frustrating when Americans (not all of course) try to defend their country even when shown facts like this. Again I apologize and it was uncalled for. After I typed it I was wondering where the edit button was.

I'm sorry, but to which facts are you referring? That we're ranked 13th in this UN ranking? Well I don't think that matters at all, as the difference between 1st and 13th (or 20th for that matter) is quite negligible here.

If anything, I'm glad to know that so many other countries have reached or surpassed the living standards of the United States.

This is a shitlist - and every norwegian (inc. my self now that).
Norway pays this organisation the nice sum of $285 million a year.
One of the credentials for this list is open border for third world immigrants - and Norway has wide open borders for non producing immigrants which eventually will destroy our countrys economy which we see the start of in a lot of Europeean countries just now.
The european press does barely report the riots in Switzerland,Sweden,Denmark,Holland - our freedom of speech is also more or less gone to not "offend" a certain religion.

hate tip : youtube

Congrats with the third place, but can you understand that result for a country that more or less is technically bankrupt ?
Your currency value isn't even listed anymore in Bank of Norway :)

Otherwise greetings to our brothers on Iceland ! - I felt ashamed since Norway didn't help you anymore than we did

lol yeah I'll sign up to be a border guard just so I can tell them "guys, guys, guys, why are you coming here? Didn't you get the memo? Norway's an even better place to live." and watch them start rafting across the Atlantic.

To bad it doesn't help us. It would be nice if somebody else got a huge influx of Mexicans crossing their border illegally.

I'm assuming THEY TOOK YERR JERRRBSSS. How hasty to blame the "illegals". Don't forget about lazy blacks and white trash while you're at it. Also asians are good at math.

Hey look, someone's playing the race card.

Interestingly, this report focused on immigration and migration within countries. So, looking quickly through the data, Germany currently has a higher rate of growth in their immigration than the US does, with immigrants making up about the same portion of the population as in the US (12.9% vs. 13%).

Of course in their case it's primarily people from Turkey and Eastern Europe, not Mexicans. But other countries do in fact have to deal with this issue, not just the US.

Actually, according to the same source, by early 2010 the US will be the home of 1/5th of the world's international migrants. Yup, 20% of the TOTAL migrant population will live in the US.

So, it's amazing that we're that far down the list on "best places to live" when we're so far out in front of the "where people move" list.

And if you look at it as percentage of the population, tiny middle eastern countries (like Qatar and Bahrain) dominate due to large oil job booms. Those draw in a ton of foreigners in comparison to the native populations.

Another interesting fact is that the US accounts for 18% of the total remittance (money sent "back home" as it were) outflows for the world, which is about right on track with our migrant population make up. That's a big part of foreign aid that people rarely consider.

So, to me, lists like this are all well and good, but compare inflow/outflow from every country in the world, and almost invariably people chose the US much more than the US choses anywhere else. To bring Norway into it, two and a half times as many people moved from Norway to the US as from the US to Norway. It's a 5x ratio for the UK, and 10x for Germany. That tells me something about the quality of life available (and tolerance for immigration, obviously).

P.

Hey look, someone's playing the race card.

Sarcasm.
You want a lesson from Peter's coworker Fouad?
He taught him sarcasm: "OHOHO..Yes..he said nice day..it not really nice day! Now u funny too! OHOHO!" ChaCha!

I think the thing here is, BLAME EVERYONE ELSE BUT YOURSELF, it's the AMERICAN WAY! This applies to everything including our ranking on the UN list. :D

We don't talk about this much up here in Canada. Please no sympathy cards. A couple of years ago the stats came out that white people now were less then 50% of the population. That is what our multiculturalism policy has done for us. When I filled out a form for the government that asked what race I belonged to I actually ticked off the minority box. Their was only three choices Native, Asian,or Minority. They were old forms when whites were a majority, so if you left the boxes blank they knew you were white.

These rankings are a joke and it's hilarious to see liberals running around acting vindicated by them. Half of the ranking is based on bullshit criteria like this:

-Seats in parliament (% held by women)

-Women in ministerial positions (% of positions)

-Year women received the right to vote

-Year of ratification of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families

In other words, things that have absolutely no bearing on quality of life. Most of the countries "ranked" above us are not truly free. In Sweden, the citizens are virtually slaves of the government, with half of the GDP going to taxes. In Australia, the government tells you what video games you can and can't play by censoring some and denying the release of others. In France, there have been riots because the government will not allow some people under 30 to get jobs.

Afghanistan in the bottom 10? No way... where else can you get a huge house, beautiful carpets, and plenty of food for so little? And the mountains in the NE are great for snowboarding (if you avoid the mines).

No such thing as a real conservative loudmouth.
They're just liberals denying their true nature.

What - no multiple wives in your list of benefits? Of course, if I had to listen to more than one nagging me everyday, I'd volunteer to farm the minefield. ;) :p

You're ranked lower than Canada PERIOD. Doesn't matter Obama made you guys higher or lower. No point trying to argue otherwise.

You'd think in this day and age with the internet in every global household and people playing online games with anyone else in the world, everyone can afford to fly anywhere, drive anywhere, there would be a sense of global community, but I see we have a long ways to go.

Only because of my fellow Americans.

I apologize to everyone for my fellow country men / women who still have their head up their ass.

Until we realize that we are apart of a larger global community, and learn to reach out to one another to find common ground and solve our differences we will not get anywhere.

Obama seemed like he had potential, and in this regard he just might. However he is a whole lot of talk and no action. I find it hilarious that the right-wing has demonized him so much when he has done basically NOTHING as of yet. Oh with the exception of carrying on a number of right-wing neo-liberal policies inacted by the previous administration.

I am still holding out for all that hope, change stuff.

Let me get this right.

You bought Obamas campaign bullshit hook line and sinker and then you say the rest of the Americans have their heads up their asses?

Take a deep breath through your nose pall, that ain't hope you're smelling.

Whites are less than 50% of the population there? Oh, the horror. I feel for you all.

Wrong answer. The problem is people hide behind their government in one hand and talk shit about them in the other. There's too much national pride in everyone. Not just Americans, but every country in the world.

Forget the government. Forget politics. Forget the blame game. Think about YOU as a PERSON. A citizen of this planet.

The opposite has happened in many cases. You have websites, blogs, etc, that have a very specific focus and viewpoint. Places like that, particularly extreme ones, attract people with the same viewpoint which gets parroted and reenforced among its readership and members over and over. The result is a narrowing, not a broadening, of peoples' views and understanding.

Finland, Sweden, Norway.

Those only places I'd be willing to live in. I'm from Finland obviously. :D

Bloody hell, this year we didn't make the top-10! :(

Gogo norway WOOHOO .

i'd rate it 2nd cause cars are so god damn expensive( once you add some good japaneese BHP's to it)
American cars are like non existing due to CO2 output is out of scale, and therefore even more expensive :p

To bad it doesn't help us. It would be nice if somebody else got a huge influx of Mexicans crossing their border illegally.

ehm, sorry, but norway got that too.
Poland.
LT.
Russia.
Pakistan.
Turkey.
Iran.

We have the highest rate of immigrants in the whole europe per populous, and the reason is fairly obvious with the news post :p

I do think it has something to do with the amount of oil there is for a population thats the same for a american state like oregon.
And, yet another thing, we dont have military expenses that could run a small country, or 2-3 states.
There is numerous of reasons, the latest big one must be Bush :p

Hope things wraps up over there though.
