Brandon LeBlanc used the Windows Team Blog today to announce that Windows XP Mode will be available via the Microsoft Download Center on October 22nd.

Thanks to everyone’s feedback, we’re happy to announce that Windows XP Mode has RTM’d today. We expect to make the final release of Windows XP Mode available via the Microsoft Download Center on October 22nd. OEMs will be able to offer Windows XP Mode on their PCs based on their manufacturing schedules.

This makes me happy, I am about to load up my work pc with Win7 and need xpmode for stupid legacy programs that the developer refuses to upgrade.

Than you MS

When I found out Windows XP "mode" was actually just a VM instance I was bummed. I thought they would do something like parallels and "pop out" the application so it appeared it was running in Windows 7, and not a separate OS/desktop. Its literally VMware.

It does. Have you not messed with it yet?

This won't fix the driver compatibility issues that caused me to switch back to XP from 7.

You need to look into it more. . . it does exactly what you hoped it would do.

Yeah, XP mode actually makes Windows 7 windows if you make the sandbox for it. So you can have your saved data on your Win7 drives and everything.

I don't have the final version obviously, but I was a bit bummed about the XP mode for different reasons. Maybe I'm not doing it correctly but the XP mode doesn't seem to support DirectX for games and it doesn't do full screen DOS mode for really really old games. Oh well.

Very very few VM programs are capable of hardware acceleration

DOSbox?

And don't hold your breath on DX support thru a VM. Besides, what games were you trying to play? DX5 or 6 games?

LOL, that is exactly what it does, I suggest actually installing it and using it before making those claims. :p

I for one LOVE XP mode but as time goes on, we will see less and less of a use for it which I guess is a good thing.

Yeah, this. XP Mode went from something that could be potentially useful for me (all I do on my Windows machine is game) to something I'll never use.

No kidding? I did poke around, but after seeing a Windows XP desktop startup and clicking through the menu above I didn't see anything like that. I didn't however check the program's menu-- is that where its at?

It says they will let you vm XP 64bit on Win7 32bit, but will they let you vm XP 32bit on Win7 64bit? I could use that for several 32-bit only apps. Currently dual-booting Vista 64 with XP 32 and this could save me having to restart for a handful of rarely used apps.

I do have it installed, and I did use it, but I must have seriously overlooked that feature.

In fact, I'm still not seeing. What do I gotta do to get an application to "pop out"? Not seeing it in the context menus, the menus on top of the VM, or anywhere else...

If you install an app in the XP VM and then close the VM, it will show up under "Windows XP Mode Applications". I used Packet Tracer as an example even though it works perfectly fine in 7.

Ugh, no edit button..

Here is Packet Tracer running in XP Mode.

Got it-- that explains why I don't see it. Only thing I've got on it is Duke3D :p Thanks!

That's pretty cool. I wonder if support for XP Mode will include XP updates. :p
