Hey guys,
I'm helping my girlfriend's little sister pick out a new laptop. She wants a 10 inch laptop under $500. I know that we want the intel atom Z processor but I'm not all that versed on hardware at this low level. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for the best 10 incher to buy or at the very least what i should be looking for.

Additional info: She's not a big gamer - She plays sims and some game called wizard 101. She spends most of her time browsing the internet watching videos.

Thanks in advance :D

I'm a fan of the Dell Mini line. There's the 10 and the 10v, the 10v just has less features and few minor differences with the CPU (N not Z).

if this is going to be an only laptop (e.g. her only computer) i would recommend not getting an atom z and instead getting a laptop with a core 2 solo in it. they are much faster and well worth it if your budget allows it. most atom based laptops are priced around 300-350. the core solos are a bit more expensive at around 400. i'd recommend something like this:

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=211827806&listingid=52131290

400 w/ free shipping (+tax where applicable). its not much bigger or heavier than most netbooks and performs much better. screen is much larger (and higher res!) which leads to better usability.

I agree that the core solo computer would be better and isn't that much bigger. I grabbed a Mini 10v a little while back from the Dell Outlet for $260 and it was a nice netbook. I liked it a little better than the EEE's I had.

Don't get an Atom Z processor - they're worse than the N series. The N270 or N280 are your best bets. Better yet, get a CULV like the Acer Aspire 1410 going for $399 at Amazon these days.

i am gonna get flamed for this.... i like dell laptops and have not had problems with them and used them for the last 8 years....

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellst...1&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=laptop-inspiron-10

options...
upgrade to 1.6GHz processor faster is better...
only upgrade moble connectivity if the owner is willing to pay more on the cell phone bill.... however does give the option to connect out on the road.
solid state drive? for the time being solid state drives can be a little slow at saving data so i would suggest going with the standard 160gig drive......
upgrade to the larger battery this provides more time "off the grid"
internal tv tuner seems neat but highly optional......
i highly suggest an optical drive..... makes installing things much easier.....
for the wifi i would suggest upgrading to the 802.11 g/n card. this card can handle the new wifi n standard which will make the laptop more future resistant...
the rest are little addons......

^^^ I won't flame you for the Dell laptop. I will flame you for suggesting THAT Dell laptop. By the time you get done configuring it, it's $450+ and that's way too expensive for the performance you're getting. Mini 10v is reasonably priced for a netbook. Otherwise, just get the Core 2 Solo computer over the Atom based netbook. Much better performance for the size.

Eee PC 1000HE.

I have one that I use ALOT.
Bought a 2 GB Ram stick, that's all the upgrading I did.
Runs Windows 7 32bit like a champ.

Won't conquer the world but will do most things very well.:D

I really liked my Dell Mini 9, bought my girlfriends parents 2 mini 10's and they love them, the bigger keyboard makes the biggest difference.

Good luck!

I wouldn't limit myself to a netbook, that Core Solo is the way to go for the price. I would try to convince her to get a larger laptop due to more powerful components, but women will always go for looks over performance.

Panasonic Toughbook CF T2 its awesome, you can pick one up on ebay for cheap...

Dell has 10.2 inch screen computers with a pink color. You can customize the laptop to your needs.
