So after a solid 2 years of constant use, my 8800 GTX is finally dying. Graphics wigging out and locking up as soon as I get into windows, green lines all over my screen while booting etc etc. What would be a noticeable, reasonably priced upgrade?

Sorry to hear about your card. What do you consider reasonable? You bought an 8800GTX two years ago so you paid at least $300-$350 for it. If you want something right NAO, then grab an ATI 5870 or wait for the 5850's to become available. Or, just go with a 260 or 285. I would go the ATI route.

You didn't say how you use your computer or even what your current specs and budget constraints are, so don't expect a lot of helpful responses.

My system : e8400, 4gb mushkin ddr2 800, dead 8800gtx, Gigabyte x38 ds4, Corsair HX620 psu.

I use my comp for gaming, and I'd like to keep the video card under $300. I haven't used an ATI card in a very long time, have they improved their horrible driver support?

+1 for the 5870. DX11 support, cost to performance ratio, and the most powerful single GPU option for the time being. It will last you a bit longer. Personally I'd rather go with the purchase that future proofs me a bit. Just my humble opinion!

EDIT: With that bit of info available now, I'd go with the 5850 or even 4890.

their drivers are fine. nvidia's drivers are fine too. there are no bad drivers in my experience. if i were in your shoes i'd get an HD5850 when they're released (rumors say next week).

Aren't you going to RMA your GTX? If not, like everyone else is saying go for ATI's 5870 card.

No offense , but buying GTX285 nowdays is just crazy (unless you find super hot deal). For that kind of money you can almost buy new 5-series from ATI. Even GTX 275 is very close performance wise for a lot less money.

Yep. Upgrading anyway, why not go for the rumored $260 HD5850 and DX11. I think it comes with a coupon for Dirt2 also, so that will sweeten the deal.

Rumored as in price.

I used to be sponsored by PNY, so I got the card for free from them. I don't think I can RMA it.

Worth a try as emailling them. The worst they can say is sorry but no dice.

I don't think it's a rumor that the price is around $260. It was even on one of AMD's slides.

+1 for the oven.

I will probably upgrade to a 5870x2 (or what ever ridiculous card ATI has at the time) when I wanna get rid of my 4850.

I know the MSRP is $259. Just stating some venders will attempt to price gouge if demand exceeds supply. ;)

I'm probably going to try the oven method. How long can I expect it to work after baking it?

Like the others said.. 5850 in your price range if the Oven doesn't work.

I think my BFG is on the way out as well

I'm seeing a lot of 8800 series cards, particularly the GTX dying all of a sudden. My 8800 GTX was crapping out on me earlier this month. I've sent it for RMA and should get my replacement some time next week.

Unfortunately I already put it in the oven, so no pics or vids. :(

Fortunately it works like a charm now!

Thanks for all the help!

should change the name of the thread to "Zombie 8800GTX back from the dead" :)

nice!

it seems the longevity on baked cards is not very predictable. some people have had items last days to weeks to months...so its really a crapshoot. id start saving up some money now for that next upgrade.

i havent been using my 8800 since i baked it other than the initial testing. its been sitting on my desk since. who knows, it might not even work the next time i need it.

please post in the resurrection thread of your success please. :)

For under $300, the 5850 (~$260) sounds like a worthwhile upgrade for you. It's faster than a gtx 285 and has DX11 support. I assume you're running at least 1080p resolution?

Yeah I have a 22" 1080p monitor. Hopefully this lasts until the 5850's come up on newegg. Are they going to be $250 or $299?

Wow... Well hopefully the freshly baked GTX lasts you until you get a 4580 shipped to you! ;)

either bake it or clean out the fan. mine collected alot of dust then its back to normal.
