How powerful is the 260m?

yes it will run aion fine, my quADRO FX 770M runs aion fine and my friend has an XPS 1330 with the crappy 8400 256 meg card and it runs fine, but its still like half the speed of a real 260

aion runs pretty good even on low end systems but youll have some of the eye candy off, good game though we enjoyed all the betas :)

Thanks guys, I'd like a 280m gtx but those 17" are heavy and no battery life. I was looking around xoricpc.com and found some good 15" with the higest Rez. They did have that 17" safer which was around 8.3 lbs which isn't to heavy actually with a 280m gpu

I just started looking into notebooks with the 260m card and so far I'm hearing they are more or less on par with a 9800GT. It will run all the modern games decently if you pair it up with a good cpu. I'm currently looking to see how much cpu is needed though. In a thread I created here so far I'm hearing a P8XXX is minimum but I'm still looking into it.

The Sager 9850 has 280m sli but its an 18" notebook. Not sure if Sager has any models with 260m sli or not.

sager does have some systems out with both the 260 and 280m's

they have a 15.4" with the 260m
NP8662 http://www.sagernotebook.com/product_customed.php?pid=160092

also they have a 18.4" that's capable of sli 280m's
NP9850 http://www.sagernotebook.com/product_customed.php?pid=188463

myself i just ordered an Alienware M17x with a T9600, 4gb ddr3, 250gb hdd, sli 260m, 1900x1200 wuxga in the lunar silver color.. now my only thing to get is a bag for it and for the razer orochi to get back in stock and i'm set for lans

I liek the M17X but ti's heavy as hell and i'd like to carry it around for work and class.

the thing is only at max 12lbs.. thats not a whole of weight, just need to start eating some wheaties lol

If you are worried about weight then you probably dont want anything with dual (sli) video cards since those models will tend to be heavy due to their size.

I'm debating on the M17x or the new M15x thats supposed to be released on the 24th of this month. The M15x is supposed to get the new i7 procs so I'm holding out for that.

Post pics when you get it!

It's still one of my "dreams" to own an Alienware, and the convenience of a laptop has definitely caught on in my house... me and my gf both have laptops and I doubt I will ever own a desktop as a primary machine ever again. I'm hoping to spring for an Alienware as my next replacement, but gotta save up for a ring for the lady..... /sigh

What's the Graphics like Dual 260's or what?

my guess would be an i7 for cpu and maybe the new ati cards or probably just a 260 or 280m w/o sli due to the size

No one knows the requirements to run StarCraft 2 or Diablo 3 yet, but I want to buy a laptop that will be able to run them somewhat decently. Any predictions if this 260m will be able to do it? Could it be done with less?

Once again, 260M = G92b = something around the performance of a desktop 8800GT.

As notebookcheck.net says :

"Compared with Desktop graphic cards, the performance is about at the level of the GeForce 9800 GT (600/1500/900)."

Personally I would be pretty confident in that sort of card being able to handle the titles you mentioned. For starters, they are both Blizzard titles and Blizzard generally tries to keep requirements at a reasonable level (see: World of Warcraft) as it helps them maintain their player base and ensure that their long time fans can get at the games they crave. Also (especially with SC2) given the long development on it I somehow doubt that it's going to have high requirements.

Plus there's always the option to dial down the eye candy... My laptop has a measly ole 8600 GT in it (mobile version, keep in mind) and I can still play newer games on it. Unless you are hurting for a new machine, or there are other titles you anticipate, I would hold off for a little while; we'll eventually learn of the release dates for these titles, and the longer you wait, the more bang you will get for your buck as NEW tech becomes commonplace and older tech becomes cheaper... or the best/newest stuff comes out at the same cost of last generations brand new stuff.

Good points. I'm in need of a new laptop now, and do not plan on doing any gaming on it other than those two games. I know Blizzard is looking out for the weaker machines so it probably won't be an issue. I'm kind of curious if I could get by on something less, like a 9400m or similar. Those two games will be the most demanding thing I ask of my laptop, besides decoding 1080p. I don't want to spend more than I have to on a powerful video card that is going to shorten the battery life.

I'd stay with the Clevo W860CU. The mobile i7 will be around with us until Sandy Bridge releases in H1 2011. The only component that will be changing is the GPU, in which the G92b will be succeeded by the mobile GT200 later in 2010.

At 7lbs, a 15" Latitude (D820) was waaay to heavy for me, after walking back and forth, daily, over 1km! It was first in a 'laptop bag', then in a backpack. While I has glad when I got the lighter XPS M1210, the D820 is just far more solid... it can probably block a nuke... (no flexing).

Gaming on a laptop is pretty pointless... a slim desktop offers more upgradability then that! (and besides, for me [between school and work] battery life trumps all. (well... the Go 7400 isn't a power saver, but when it came out, it was no slouch, either.)

the 9400m is a pretty solid card for light gaming, but if its going to be your primary machine I would step up to at least the 9600. That's, if you're considering weight and battery. Obviously they dont compare to the higher end stuff, but I have no experience with that.

Here's some benchmarks for the 9400, it's pretty weak, so I wouldn't expect to be satisfied with it for next gen games. http://optimitza.cat/news/2008/10/16/nvidia-geforce-9400m-benchmarks/.

I've got a unibody macbook with the 9400m with Vista installed, it's okay for COD4 and older stuff, but it's nothing special. If there's anything you want me to run for some numbers, just let me know.

When I played it at Blizzcon '07 they were running it on G92 based cards. The graphics were significantly better last month when I played it again but it should still be fine on an 8800gt/260m.
