I currently have a linksys WRT54G router and a Terrayon TJ 715x cable modem. The router serves both a wireless network, and a single pc and an xbox in the wired network. The performance is usually satisfactory, but there's a problem I've been having almost since I got this setup 2 years ago. Occasionally, the router will simply stop providing internet access to both networks. The LEDs for internet connection on the router still blink, and computers on both wired and wireless networks can connect to the router. The internet just goes away.
The problem can be temporarily fixed by pushing the little reset button on the back of the router.

Does anybody know what the problem here is?

if you're only rebooting the router, it sounds like a router issue.

any torrenting going on?

also, when the issue happens, log in to the router and look at the status page, to verify IP address, DNS, etc, received from ISP

Agree it's probably the router....and I'll add to that...the setup.
When you say the problem goes away by hitting the reset button, that restores the router to factory default settings, which means a default wireless SSID of linksys with no..NO security at all. Soooo....even if you're not doing stuff like heavy downloads with that torrent/p2p junk...some kiddies next door could be since your wireless is wiiiiiiide open.

What I would do, update the Linksys to the latest firmware, or even try a slightly better performing 3rd party (and still free) firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato.

Make your wireless SSID unique
Lock down your wireless with WPA or higher security
Change your routers default admin password.

See if that helps.
Now if you have no neighbors, and you yourself are a heavy downloader..consider a more robust router that can better handle heavy traffic.

, that restores the router to factory default settings

well, this would depend on how long he held the reset button in for :p

on my Linksys, quickly pushing the reset button only reboots the router.
you have to hold it in for ~15 seconds to reset to factory default settings

Right. I learned my lesson the first time I held the button. Reconfiguring all of your forwarded ports sucks.

I do torrent some, but its never when I'm torrenting that I get problems. The router will generally cut out when it isn't being used, which means a trip to the basement to reset it.

So is your wireless unique and secured?

Just a idea, but what are you doing when it cuts out? If the answer is nothing, then the connection could be disconnecting due to idling.

It usually is nothing. I'm going to try leaving a torrent on 24/7 with the speed capped. If it is due to idling, that should fix it

do you have DSL and your ISP uses PPPoE?

If so, there is an option for "Disconnect if idle for XX minutes" or "Keep-Alive"

change to keep-alive.

I walked a lot of people through changing this option when I worked for an ISP.

edit: damn, you said cable modem. oopsie.

edit2: on that note, have you checked the router status page when internet is lost, to see if you still have an IP, DNS servers, etc?
