Looking at two tv's...

Probably a little more than what you want to spend, but I bought the 47" LG 47LH90 LCD monitor with LED backlighting.

I basically chose LCD over plasma because it consumes less electricity and produces less heat.

I specifically looked at the LG 47LH90 because:

1. LED backlight with local dimming capabilities for actual blacks. The LED lights are in a grid pattern of about 256 sections, each is individually controlled and brightness varies depending on what is being displayed in that section.

The downside is "white bloom" since each LED section backlight a large number of pixels. Most noticeable when credits are scrolling against a black background. Also some people notices it, while other do not. Two of three of my friends did not notice "white bloom".

2. IPS panel which makes wide angle viewing doable with little color shifting compared to other HDTVs made with MVA / PVA panels.

A friend of mine who owns a plasma said this particular HDTV actually looks real good compared to what he remembers of his 65" Panny HDTV (don't know his model, high-end model from a few years ago).

I've got the Samsung LN46B650. The biggest reason I went with LCD over plasma is because of the glare from the screen. My room has a lot of light coming in and I didn't want all the glare.

I can say that the screen on this TV is so glossy that it has as much glare as a plasma. If this is a big thing for you, make sure you look at the reviews for comments on how glossy the screen is.

On a side note - I absolutely love the TV.
