Hey guys n gals,

I just upgraded my desktop from vista to windows 7 and had issues with some drivers. I figured out the Ethernet and video drivers stuff but can't get my audio to work. I have an old computer; its a P4 with SiS645dx motherboard (with on board audio). I just get an error "no audio output device is installed." I know its a driver issue but have no clue which driver to install. I tried realtek ac97 but that didn't work. Any clues fellas? Thank a bunch in advance.

Ok, there is very limited information of that motherboard, so the best I found was THIS. Is that your motherboard for any chance?
If it is, then it seems to have a "CMI 9738" audio chip.

I personally tried looking for official drivers, but didn't find any, only from 3rd party websites which I don't really trust. However, out of all those, none listed any Windows 7 drivers, so probably there isn't proper drivers for it yet.

Also, are you using 32-bit and 64-bit? If you are using 64-bit, then that's going to be a bigger pain in the butt.

I mean, I don't know what to tell you. Have you checked Device Manager? Does the computer even recognizes that it has onboard audio?

Sorry if I was not helpful, but this is a tough one.

First thanks for the reply.

That does look like my motherboard but may have minor differences. I downloaded a program called EVEREST which told me the type of audio drivers i would need. Like you mentioned the first one I searched was cmedia9738 but could not find one compatible with windows 7 (or vista). I'm thinking if it worked for vista it may work with 7 as well.

BTW, i'm using a 32 bit and the device manger does recognize it. If you could give me more advice or find the drivers for even vista, I could try that out to see if it works. Thanks again.

Sorry, i didn't find Vista drivers, only XP drivers. I guess you can give it a try in Compatibility Mode, if anything.

Again, this are not official drivers, so do it at your own risk: CMedia CMI-9738 (with audiorack) 5.12.01.0038.
Click the Mirrors, not the main link, so you don't have to download their garbage software too.

Tried installing that but it says i don't have that audio chip so it will not let me complete the installation. Any other ideas?

Hi All

To the OP this is all I could find. http://www.cmedia.com.tw/drivers.html

You may have to pick up a inexpensive sound card as there doesn't appear to be any driver support.

As a alternative try the Motherboard Manufacturers site.

Hope this helps.

Yea, I don't think you will find Windows 7 drivers any time soon, if ever. I mean, there is not even Vista drivers, lol.

Like jtm55 said, you could try looking for drivers in the actual motherboard website. I tried that already, but with no luck, so you might not find a solution that way either.

My honest advise at this point is for you to get a cheap sound card, something like this Audigy SE for $29.99 (Free Shipping). I already checked, and they do have Windows 7 drivers for it.

I mean, I know that's not the answer you want to hear, but I don't see any other option.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice guys. As for the drivers, I had vista before 7 and the sound card worked fine so I was hoping I could find vista drivers and that would do the trick but looks like I'm running out of luck. I think i'm left with purchasing a cheap sound card with 7 drivers. Any other recommendations besides audigy SE (anything cheaper? I only use audio for my slingbox so don't need a great sound card on this computer)?

I really don't know any other, as far as reputable companies go. However, check this other link: Audigy SE (Refurbished).
That one is a lot cheaper because is used. The seller seems to have a good rating in eBay, so I guess you can try that.

Great news guys, I got the sound to work on windows 7!

I was skimming through the installation files of the new operating system and found a folder called windows.old and open it up and bhaammm all the old files from vista... located the cmedia folder and went to device manger and selected that folder and updated the driver and it worked! So it feels great b/c I really did not feel like buying a new soundcard for this computer... now I won't need to.

Thanks a bunch Odin75 and jtm55 for the help. Much appreciated fellas!
