My new HDTV makes movies look cheesy

Hello,

I just purchased a Samsung 46" LCD along with a Sony Blue-Ray player. When I run movies (even dvd's but especially bluerays) the result is that the movie ends up looking very very cheesy. I mean we are talking B-grade porno here.

I can't decide if its the sharp edges, or the lighting, or what. But somewhere in the midst of the high definition upgrade there was exponential increase in the cheese. So far the movies I've watched in Blue-Ray are Iron Man and Transporter (the latter needed no help being cheesy before I watched it in HD).

Does anyone know what settings if any I might be able to fiddle with to make movies look more like movies again?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think you are going to have to explain what cheese means to you. We have no idea what you are talking about.

240hz and 120hz settings reduce those and you should be happier. assuming it's cabled properly...your not using like svid or composite cables are you?

If you take a movie with your personal camcorder then watch it on tv, it looks like it was taken with your camcorder.. If you watch your standard holywood movie it looks different, its got better lighting, it doesn't look like your camcorder video.

The movies on this tv look like it came from a camcorder.

Edit: what do you mean 120hz and 240 hz settings? We are using hdmi right from the blueray

Do you have the colors/contrast/etc correctly calibrated? Or are you using one of the crappy dynamic/vivid modes?

Look for a setting somewhere about Automotion Plus, and turn it to a lower level or off completely.

Check out TweakTV. They give you the basic baseline settings, and you can adjust your TV from there, depending on your viewing conditions. Here is a model similar to yours.

After you enter the settings you get from TweakTV, you might want to give the AVS HD calibration disc a try.

My thoughts too, although we dont know what brand of cheese he has yet :)

Most likely the AMP setting is indeed the culprit in this case (menu -> Picture -> Picture Options -> 100Hz Motion Plus on my Samsung 40A866).

For watching movies I set my LG 47LH90 to 60Hz.

For regular TV broadcast (unless it's a movie) I set it "240Hz" (it's really 120Hz + backlight strobing on this HDTV for sharper images).

You are seeing what is known to most as the soap opera effect, found on lcds with 120hz refresh rates, but what specifically causes it is the motion interpolation implemented by manufacturers to provide a smoother looking picture intended to reduce blur and film judder. In this case, it is samsung's automotion plus, or amp technology, that is giving it the look you currently despise. As suggested, go into the menu settings and look for where you can turn off the amp setting. If you have more questions on the set, you would best be served on the avsforum under the lcd section.
