I will agree with you there. I would rather have a little lower graphics and better physics in-game. That just brings the game to life that much more than awesome graphics but stale environment.


Who hates playing these war game shooters and you have a bad ass tank but it can never blow up the outhouse or fence no matter how many times you shoot it, but then it can blow up another heavily armored tank no problem :rolleyes:
 
If I'm trying to build a new computer within the next week or so, is this reason enough to hold off on buying a video card? I'm going to be putting it all into a SFF, and was originally planning to go with the 4890. The new cards will probably be beyond expensive though, and I would still get many years out of the 4890 right?

These are going to drop the prices of older cards and I'm sure they'll have midrange stuff that clobbers 4000 generation cards, so I would seriously consider waiting if you can.
 
Or if you prefer nvidia, buy evga and use their step up program, assuming their new cards come out in 90 days....
 
I will admit that I am getting a bit jaded about new hardware. I think it's mostly down to the games. Used to be, there were all sorts of new killer games and upcoming games that were 'just playable' with current hardware, especially with the resolution and features jacked up, and you couldn't wait to buy that new card and really enjoy the games.

Now, I feel games are lagging the hardware, and other than a smattering of titles, nothing challenges the cards. At today's prices you can buy a SLI/CF setup pretty cheap that does justice to most games. The single exception may be Crysis and Crysis Warhead, but these games are now old and the prospect of playing them again but smoother and with more eye-candy is not quite as exciting. Maybe Rage will change my mind, but I have the feeling that it will scale well because of the mega-texturing engine and the console development cycle.

I miss the golden age of PC gaming - seems like it's the age of the console now. I think we are still one or two full video card cycles away from the point where PC games are again an order of magnitude visually superior to their console equivalents, and if that's accompanied by games that can only be experienced at their best on the PC, I will get excited once more about new hardware releases.

30% improvement and DX11 compatibility? Yawn. Hope I'm wrong though.

If there is a new 400 dollar card. It should be able to at least contend with the GTX 295. I don't think DX11 alone would justify such a price.
 
The new 5800 series is for sure worth waiting for, it will be ATI's 9700Pro ass kicking all over again

Word on the Rage3D site is saying the 5870 card should be 70-80% faster than the 4870x1gb and that the 5870X2 will be like 75% faster than the current 4870X2

So if true that's a killer step forward and I think pretty realistic. So that should put the single 5870 card easily 50% + faster than nVidia's top single card GTX-285. Again this could be all BS I just read it on the rumor forums at Rage3D, so who knows ? They just said it was based off early hardware samples and early drivers, that performance was expected to be much better for retail.

So I am expecting close to twice the performance compared to current stuff. So the 5780 single card better be twice as fast as the 4870 or close to it, any less is a huge disappointment.

Pretty rare lately of first official announcement and release at the same time. Seems to always be the hype to sell it first, then they bring it out to retailers a few weeks or month later. I think realistically it won't be in our hands until early October. I hope in time to play Operation Flashpoint 2, that game will need some major horsepower.

I'm thinking the card itself will begin to show on vendors on the 16th or 17th, with newegg/all vendors to follow in the days after.
 
Are the budget cards usually released right away? If it comes out next month and the cards are all 300-400$, I probably shouldn't hold my breath. I can get the 4890 right now for a little less than $170 after the bing cashback.

If anything, would I be right in saying that the 4890 could hold me over at least a year? I'm putting together a SFF system and I usually don't upgrade/rebuild until 2-3 years after my last one. I've been gaming on my laptop's 8600m gt for the last two years, and an X800XL the two-three years before that. Is the 4890 a solid enough deal to jump on in light of the new cards if I'm on a budget? Sorry to divert the topic so much, but being a student with relatively low income, I'm just all frazzled about how I can best stretch my dollar.
 
Hopefully this will kick Nvidia in the ass. Maybe they'll drop the elitist attitude and actually price their cards competitively.

Man I want some specs and benchmarks soon so I can decide whether or not to put some cash aside. If the flag ship card can deliver decent 2560x1600 performance and maintain an efficient power/thermal profile, I'm buying one at launch :).
 
I'm buying one of these at launch unless they actually perform worse than the 4800 series (lol). I've been holding onto my x1900 so long they stopped making drivers for it. It's time to upgrade.

My money on a paper launch with lift of NDA on reviews. I would assume most reviewers already got cards since Gary Key from AT got his already.
 
The only thing that sucks about these new cards on the rise is I have no games to use them with. What do I mean by this you ask? I've already played through Crysis and any other visually stimulating game that my GTX 280 couldn't quite wrap it's meaty paws around!

Hehe, I'm still going to get a new card any way :) And I'll reinstall Crysis just to turn that sucker up some more!

No one really has a clue how the new cards will perform, it's all wild speculation at this point... And beyond a few titles like ArmA/Flashpoint 2 it doesn't seem like there's any huge performance hogs on the horizon a-la-Crysis either, I could be mistaken tho, I'm not very up to date on gaming news. Point is, if you're gaming at 1920x1200 or below ('specially if it's below) then a 4890 will definitely handle almost all current and incoming games just fine...

They're not gonna release next-gen mid-range parts next month and completely undercut the huge stock of GTX 260/275 and 4890/4870 cards that are still selling very well (heck even stuff like 4770 is still moving)... They'll release, as usual, the high end parts and we might see the mid-range at year's end, at best. Again, that last bit is half speculation, but half is just common sense based on past trends.

I don't think a 4890 for $170 would be a bad investment right now, at all... Unless you're gaming at 1680x1050 and you can find a GTX 260 or 4870 significantly cheaper.

Well, that is what most speculate aswell. That this will be a paper-launch, with actual availability in the next couple of weeks, maybe beginning of October. And RV870 is not a new architecture.
 
DX11 seems like a big step in the right direction, ie: performance tricks that were only previously available on consoles can now be done here.

Some interesting stuff.

I won't be buying the first generation of this though. I can't say I'd look forward to getting smacked with DX 11.1 which needs a new hardware revision. I hope DX11 has the longevity of DX9 though.

Have you seen Operation Flashpoint 2 due in October. Uh I think that will need some beast of a VideoCard. And the new game Borderlands will need extra horse power I am sure too. Left 4 Dead 2 in November with an enhanced Source engine.

that chart doesn't say much, id bet the vast majority of income is made on cards under 150$ where there both very competitive in terms of price/$

I do home AMD made some good cards again, competition is good for all of us

Businesses don't give a hoot about product performance! If so, then Wal-Mart wouldn't be... Wal-Mart...

If you're winning market share and outselling your opponent and/or making them bleed/playing on your terms, that's kicking ass to them!

I'm going to be getting a card this gen not for DX11 but for all the older games. I would like to be able to play Crysis and Stalker CS smoothly with all the eye candy.
 
I'm pretty sure the game Project Offset will utilize DX11, and I believe that the next gen consoles will be out November/December 2010, which will undoubedly use DX11.

the quad core was at 6.6GHz 3dmark06 is greatly influcenced by a quad core, and thus gets bloated marks.

I would say late 2011 or 2012. No way are the next consoles coming in 2010. I'd say a PS3 slim or 360 slim, and a black Wii w/ DVD make it to the market in 2010.
 
Exciting stuff.

That being said, I think I'm going to skip this generation (or at least wait until the lower-priced refresh comes out). I still love my GTX 260s too much to trade them in just yet. Especially considering I got them both for ~$300.

Unless one of these cards will offer 150% to 200% of the performance that I'm getting with with 2x GTX 260s, then I might just cave in.

My sweet spot for upgrading will likely be when this generation reaches ~$200 or below.

Then again, given that I'm trying to play games at 2560x1600, maybe I'm looking in the wrong price bracket.
