Hi, I have 2 computers with Vista Home Premium x64 bit installed and they both experience the same problem. Attempting to reboot either computer results in a long wait. half the icons in the taskbar dissapear but the computer just sits there and I can still click the start menu and browse through it, yet I cannot open a file, or right click. After about 2-3 minutes, the computer then goes to the "logging off" screen and remains there for a further 30 seconds before finally rebooting. Shutting down is similar, the computer sits there for several minutes before shutting down.

What is the cause of this? Is it a common problem? I've never experienced it before in my 2 years use with Vista.

There's your problem right there.

Not at all, I've been using it for years, not many problems with it, it certainly isn't as bad as Windows ME was. If you can not help me, do not reply, I don't need silly comments like that, they aren't helpful.

using vista ultimate 64bit for almost 2 years and did not faced any such issue.

I might be wrong but did you try updating the bios ? it might help you?.

Any recent software or driver installations?

And yep, the forum needs to be pruned from time to time.

So sensitive... some people just can't take a joke.

Sounds like something you've installed on both the PCs is getting hung up on the shutdown sequence. Try eliminating every running process until you find the culprit.

Ok, I will try that, thanks and I will look for common software installed on both machines such as Catalyst drivers could be the cause maybe.

Yes, one of the computers has the latest BIOS.

OK, I tried rebooting and when it didn't reboot, I tried to close running tasks one by one but the Task Manager refuses to open. What now? Both PC's have lots of common software installed, it would be hard to elimate the cause.

You're gonna want to stop the process before you try to shut down. Manually shut down a single process then reboot, see if it get's stuck. If it does, then try a different process, reboot again. Tedious, yes, but it's the best way to narrow it down. Start with stuff you've installed yourself i.e. Anti virus, control panels, any background apps in general. If it started recently look at any apps you just installed, or updates you've made.

If all else fails you could try reverting to a previous restore point if you have one.
