I am calling you on that speedtest on WISP there is no way you can get a 8mbps connection on wireless. heck I work for local ISP as a tech support and the fastest wireless connection that I seen was 1.5mbps.

Yep! Absolutely, positively, completely no way to get 8mbit WISP!
I'm sorry for any customers who reach you on the phone, with that attitude

first rule - pics for clicks
This is the "core" of my network in my apartment.

I've gone all gigabit ethernet, along with CAT6 wiring and enabling jumbo frames on all gigabit devices, which is very nice compared to my old ghetto 100mbit network :D

IMG_8141.jpg

I've got the following gear that you can see (top down, left-to-right):

  • Actiontec M1000 DSL Modem (running in ATM passthrough mode to my pfSense router)
  • NetGear GS108 Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch, for 100mbit wired devices
  • NetGear GS108T Managed Gigabit Ethernet Switch for gigE wired devices
  • Linksys WAP54G v2, running the DD-WRT firmware [ overclocked to 240Mhz! ], for wireless haxx
  • Linksys BEFSR4 router that doesn't do anything but make a high pitched squealing noise when plugged in.

I've also got two NetGear GS105 unmanaged switches elsewhere in my apartment for additional network connectivity.
Maybe if I ever get a wide angle lens, I'll have some pictures of the 4 servers I have jammed into the same closet :p

Very Nice setup Sir.... I like. I wish I had room in my basement for a 42u rack. Half Racks work for now.

Also how do you like vSphere? I assume you have 64 bit hardware in that white box? I can't use vSphere yet because we only have 32 bit servers.

Here's my contribution, I got a litle carried away ebay shopping for switches for studying with LOL. couldn't resist lots that were real cheap. anyway...

2x catalyst 1924
4x 2924mxl (the only reason i have four is one i bought didn't work so the company sent me a new one without needing to return the other, needless to say i fixed the old one LOL. Don't remember why i got the bottom two though.)

I've got some other stuff coming in the next few weeks as well that i'll get pictures of when its all put on.

Yep, dual quad core xeon 64Bit procs. Ive always likes ESX but one thing ive noticed recently... and im not sure if its because now their encrypting all the soap calls and data delivery to the client but its SO friggin slow. Thats my only big complaint, then theres always the little lssues like having to clone through vcenter or using the CLI... love the new features(FT, ParaV support, video acceleration, and of course the N1kV). Haven't gotten a chance to play with the 1kv nor video yet.

hehe yeah, even though its loud it helps me sleep better...... the only drawback is when i want to watch a movie or listen to music, gotta turn it way up, i like that but parents dont :D

That's why humans invented the basement. Go put all that crap down there! :D

well then they didn't invent them early enough LOL, our house doesn't have a basement, just a crawl space, its an very late 1800's house
Well your house doesn't have to be old to not have one. My house was built in 2000 and I don't have one. It's because in some places, like here in Texas, the ground is way to hard that it's not worth the effort.

Okay, here is a somewhat updated picture of my network at home.

Motorola Cable Modem with the VoIP service through MediaCom
Buffalo WHR-HP running in AP mode
Cisco 3524XL-PWR
Untangle 6.2 UTM (Rackable Systems P4 2.66GHz/1GB RAM/40GB SATA)
ESX01 (Rackable Systems 2x Opteron 270/8GB RAM/160GB SATA)
ESX02 (Rackable Systems 2x Opteron 270/8GB RAM/160GB SATA)
WHS (Rackable Systems 2x 3GHz Zeon/3GB RAM/4x 250GB SATA in RAID5)

Not pictured is my Napera Cobalt Beta switch which I just threw in the rack last this morning after I took pics last night.

I'm also working on building a home brew NAS/SAN box running FreeNAS or OpenFiler so I can do HA/VMotion on my ESX hosts, studying for VCP.

I know its messy but I'm waiting on a 1000VA UPS that is supposed to show up tomorrow and I want to get a PDU to stick in the top of my rack. Once I get that crap in there I'm going to pretty up the cables and maybe get some organizers or something. Rack is a little over 1/3 of a telco rack that my neighbor got free from his work. He didn't want the whole thing so we cut it up and I took the bottom part and bolted that pig to the joists in my basement. :D

May I recommend OpenFiler for this task? We are doing this at home now using the iSCSI..

Edit... Are those fiber gbics for copper??

but you can't be l33t and use zfs, omfg!:p

Capt. Im using the beta for freenas, its rock solid so far and I can run zfs :p, its a shame they still haven't implemented dynamic raid-z pools yet :( But my vote is for freenas for ZFS and ease.

I need to do NFS and iSCSI so I was looking at OpenFiler. The last I checked I didn't think FreeNAS would do both at the same time or something? Or maybe I was reading that wrong and they just have to be separate volumes or something. I dunno. One of my 250GBs is crapping out on my home server so I may just be forced to replace all those drives with 750GB and a "new" LSI raid card and turn that into my SAN. Then I can run WHS in VMware for HA!! :D

I think the newest version of FreeNas is suppose to have better iSCSI support. Have not looked at it in a while since we decided to go OpenFiler anyways. A few articles we could actually pointed us away from FreeNAS into using OpenFiler.

And here in Annapolis, it's way too wet.

yeah, i keep meaning to diagram my stuff and get some pics to post, but i still haven't bought a decent camera and been too lazy to install visio.

wow, this thread is friggin dead.

I don't have much to update. The only thing since the last pictures is the layer 3 switch and the new 1751 for the peerix stuff..

Come one guys bring back the network p0rn here!

i guess to help this thread out a bit i'll post up my most recent network diagram

network-2.png

all the PC's with the ??? for the IP's are DHCP and i'm to lazy to look them up LOL. the dell switch though i need a serial cable so i can actually configure stuff on it, for now its operating however the last owner had it configured.....

The 1924's and 2924's are currently not hooked up due to needing another circuit needing to be ran to my room to plug them in LOL.

eventually i want to install CME express on the 360 as soon as i can find someone selling a copy or something. in the 3660 as well i'm gonna install a NV-2V module with FXO and FXS cards to start setting up VoIP, first goal is to be able to call off to the PSTN and once i have that mastered move onto VoIP so we can ditch the landline phone serverice altogether. if anybody has a recommendation for a VoIP provider that will allow me to use CME and my cisco phones i would love to hear.

I've been running 3 fileservers in my place with FreeNAS and ZFS, and I've got no complaints as yet. The biggest fileserver I've got is running 10x Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB drives on two of this PCI-e SATA controller

Code:
antares:~# zpool list
NAME SIZE USED AVAIL CAP HEALTH ALTROOT
storage 7.25T 1.94T 5.31T 26% ONLINE -

FWIW, this PCI-e SATA controller works awesome, and is great for being fully supported by FreeBSD, Solaris, and of course, ZFS.

(Supermicro calls it a "universal I/O" card ... but it's just a PCI-e x8 card - you just have to put the correct chassis mounting bracket on it)

So, are you guys using the RAID on your controllers or using the software RAID in FreeNAS to server up the volumes, etc like on a SAN?? Just curious. Got my new chassis and LSI RAID card coming in this week. Still need to buy drives for it yet, though. Will probably stick in an 80GB and 160GB SATA I have laying around for now, then I'm going to pick up 4x1TB drives.

Peplink with 2 10/1 and 1 6/768 =

the network, I fixed the cable managment. It looks better then before. :)

For you who have home labs...how much has your electric bill gone up?

The card I got is just purely a SATA controller - although with simple BIOS / firmware updates, you can give it hardware RAID.

I'm using ZFS' built in raidz2 functionality since it blows away the RAID functionality of any sub-$300 RAID card, plus ZFS has some very nifty features.

RaidZ:D...

Cleric, I approve :p

:D

Hmmm, I'll have to look at that then. I picked up an LSI MegaRAID 300-X for my NAS/SAN box

Next time someone tells you that power surges won't hurt your gear via Cat5e, show them this:

lightning.jpg

We had one of our buildings struck by lightning a few months back, that night we lost a few Catalyst 3550's and over the following couple weeks, their replacements died as well. As it turns out, the power surge struck someone's PC, then traveled through the cat5e drop in the building and did a number on the patch panel and the gear behind it.

The immediately surrounding ports on the patch panel are ruined, some are melted, others have missing pins (who knows what happened to them)

Remind me not to stand near a rack during a lightning storm...
