Norco/WHS controller card Question

I was just wondering since I am planning to use WHS what sort of controller card would be good to buy? Obviously I will not use RAID with WHS so cheap 8 or 16 port cards would be ideal.

Also how loud is the Norco? Im about to swap my server with a quieter and less power hungry replacement and I would like to use this case.

Looking at the Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 21610SA card at the moment, seems cheap.

The norco is not quite by any stretch of the imagination. There are people at avsforum who have mosses their fan setup to hold 120s but to have the static pressure necessary to cool the 20 hdds you need good thick fans and generally they are all loud. Some are less loud than others but don t think you can put 3 yateloons in there and have 20 drives in the 30-40*C range.

There is a balance with drive temp and noise

Thanks for the help guys some good reading there.

Shame about the noise, 'Im throwing up whether to buy a Norco now or not :(

Those things are Effing Terrible.

Ockie used one of those at first and had problems and he warned us.
But I decided that maybe he had a bad one, so I bought two of them.

I should have listened.
You will have nothing but problems, and frustration and time wasted with that POS.

Get a Supermicro, SAT2-MV8(PCI-x but works in PCI), or a Supermicro SASLP-MV8(PCIe).
For a WHS there is really not a better choice.

O yea the noise:
Its not quiet, but its not supposed to be I mean its a rackmount what can you really expect.

Like Adidas4275 said there are some people who have modded it to take 120's but they are taking a hit on temps.
The real key to keeping temps down tho is component selection.
Like one of those Supermicro Atom boards, plus a Supermicro MV8 controller, and WD green drives should be a pretty cool and quiet setup, and then you could prob get away with slower 120's for quieterness (yea i just made that word up).

And since this will prob run 24\7 I recommend getting a 80Plus Gold PSU, yea it will cost you more upfront but in the end you win.

I just want to second this. I had a 6 port version that I got really cheap and the speed was absolutely horrible... I'm talking 15-20 MB/sec read and write speeds  Sure, it did hardware raid 5, but I replaced it with the Supermicro SATA card when I installed WHS and it is now sitting on the shelf. I don't even feel right trying to sell it to some other poor shmuck, if that helps you get an idea how horrible it was...

Hi guys thanks for the info, we don't get Supermicro stuff in Australia. I managed to find a SAT2-MV8 on ebay and he ships worldwide, so bought one. Thanks!

To be fair, if it's a server, it isn't as if you need to keep it in your bedroom or lounge. It can be stashed somewhere where no one will care how loud it is, as long as you've got a network cable that reaches and a power socket.
