Seagate Low Power 1.5TB HD $109.99 shipped @ Egg

Are these more reliable than the 7200 series 1.5TB drives that were pretty unreliable?

I'd say anything's more reliable that those...

That being said, this is a much better deal than the 15-day refurbs being mentioned someplace else 'round these boards...

The lower power draw itself will make up the $20 difference over the life of the drive...

I'm wondering...

Plan is to pick up an SSD for applications (new intel ones) and use 1TB drives to store movie rips I've been planning. (Ripping my whole dvd/br collection.)

How would these drives fair when playing movies from them? They won't be constently in use. Just for my movie rips, photos, music.

I agree.

Perfectly fine. I connect to my server to play BD Rips and regular DVD rips and even on a 100Mbit connection it is perfectly fine. In fact, I have a 25/25 Fios connection and my buddy has a 20/20. We have a VPN bridge set up between us both and my BD Rips play with no frame loss at all over the Fios connection. Seems to only use up about 15Mbit max at times.. So a local hard drive would have absolutely no issues at all.

I'd stay away from the Seagate 1.5TB drives peresonally. You can get the same thing in a Samsung drive for $109 with dirt cheap shipping as a woot side deal as seen below...

They also sell the 1TB Samsung drives for $79. The Samsung drives have much better performance numbers in terms of efficency dollar for dollar.

My 7200.11 1.5TB has been good, my 2 Samsung F1s haven't been (well they ran well but had a resonating sound that could drive a cow crazy). If the F2 doesn't have the pulsating resonating low tone, that'd be a pretty good buy.

The Samsung F2 green drives are significantly louder than the F1 series, upwards of 8 decibels. I used to be a big Seagate guy but I've gone over to the Western Digital side of life the last few years and they haven't given any reason for me to look back so far.

That is a great price on that Seagate, although I still havent recovered from the Firmware stuff.

Yes the F2's do seem to be louder, kind of a bummer becuase i really liked the F1's.

As Far as WD is concerned when you have to do an RMA it will.
I love WD and its what I buy cause I think they make the best drives ATM.

BUT there RMA process sucks, and sometimes you dont even get the same drive back.
Last year I had to RMA 2 drives. It took two Months for them to get it right.
I had a two of the WD3000BLFS...the ones without the icepack. They shipped me GLFS's which is a big problem cause they didnt fit in my servers backplane.
I sent them back, they sent me HLFS's, they sent me more HLFS's.
this got so out of hand that I told them I am keeping all the drives until you send me the right stuff, and if you charge my credit card I will just deny the charge.
They finally got me the right drives, and told me I had to pay to ship the other drives back I was at 7 at this point that i had to ship back. I told em I wasnt going to pay because they screwed up. So they sent me 5 shipping labels, and I kept an extra Two drives, and they have no track of them.

Bottom line WD RMA Dept = retards

I just noticed you can get the Samsung F2 drives with a nice quantity discount if you buy at least 2. The price is $119 each but 17% volume discount so $99 a drive with free shipping. The Western Digital 1.5TB drive has much better performance in terms of I/O operations but the Samsung is the king of seq reads so it's one of those scenarios where you get to pick and choose but how can you say no to 6 cents a GB?

Never had an issue with the 1.5's personally, but then again I burned a new firmware on them and all is well.
