alright, i know you guys are probably thinking not another 24 port recommendation but i have a few more specific items that i want to address as well.

1) It needs to support gigabit on all ports
2) be easy to use when i start to play with VoIP phones if possible. Right now i don't have any but when i do i would like to have them on our main network instead of a seperate switch.
3) Port security features like cisco has if possible
4) Will play nice with my other cisco equipment.
5) Jumbo frames- around 9000 if possible
6) i don't plan to spend more than 400-500 if possible, after all this is just for home use.

I've looked at like the cisco 3560's and such but those are way to much for me currently. THanks for your time.

Get a used HP 2824

It meets all of your requirements and can be had for 350. Bought one myself and I LOVE it.

HP ProCurve or Dell Powerconnect be my vote.

Which exact model I will let some of the more in depth experts answer ;)

how about a dell 5324? a friend said that would probably be a good switch based on the specs. he told me a place that has one pretty cheap as well.

HP ProCurve, done!
Lifetime warranty
I install those things and never have to come back 'n reboot them or anything like that for years on end (unlike some other brands), absolutely rock stable.

so no thoughts on the 5324? well i have been looking at buying a new HP 1800-24g as well, i think i like the looks of it as well.

As a side question, can you guys recommend a serial to usb adapter that will actually work with tera term in vista 64? i bought one and installed there latest drivers and everything but cannot get it to work properly, kinda need it so that i can setup my cisco router LOL. There is only one computer in the house that has a serial port and i'm not gonna run back and forth when i need to use console port.

I've got a Belkin one that has worked with everything I've thown at it. Of course, I haven't tried it in anything other than WinXP.

I also just picked up a Dell 5324 on eBay. I have to say that the setup is way above my head at the moment, but that's what learning tools are for right? I've got it up and working on my network with link aggregation and LACP so far. VLAN's and STP are next on my learning curve.

I've got an HP 1800-24G as well and have nothing but good things to say about it.

I've been running a 1800-24G for 2+ years now. Just as stable as HPs higher end ProCurve switches at a much lower cost. You still get the lifetime warranty.

1800-24g is nice. I'm currently using one at home. If you can live without a console port and a few features that you would get out of a fully managed switch, then it's a great switch.

what are the few features that its missing, its not gonna affect my decision at this point but i would like to know.

i have a dell powereconnect 2724... no managment port.. but web based setup...

pretty nice... 24 x gigabit ports...

STP would be the deal breaker for me, i would rather have a switch with it due to the fact that i will be running many different switches off it, i doubt i'll have any looping but would rather be safer than sorry.

yes i did actually, i found a real bargin on a dell 5324 switch, has all the features i need and is gigabit :d what more can i say.
