Penn and Tellers opinion on violent video games

you can see jack thompson has a ps3 and a 360 controller in the video.

They were @ssholes at the end, but i guess they needed to show that last video to drive the point home.

BTW, i grew up playing Doom, Quake and CS, and they're technically more violent than what we have now coz it was time before FPS's violence was desensitized.

Come to think of it, i'm not sure what you guys do in college but we have ROTC and i'm a BSCS. Know what that means? We have a battalion of computer science geeks with extensive experience in CounterStrike, and they give us M1 garands to practice rifle handling and required to shoot live rounds with M16's.

The military guys overseeing us didn't look worried.

edit: Then again, they probably have rifles hidden somewhere ready to shoot us on sight.

I hope they gave that kid a sweet console with some games or some money or something. The kids at his school are going to mock the shit out of the poor kid.

Good show. I liked it.

Off topic, but the 'suits' in the middle of video 2, the guy is Dr. Lawrence Kutner. He shares the name with Kal Penn from tv's "House M.D." Pretty crazy.

Thanks for the links, watching this now.

edit: I think a handgun would've garnered a couple more shots.

Looked to me like the kid got hit with the butt of the gun when it discharged.
I think that's the main reason he didn't like it/cried. lol

FPS didn't teach him how to handle a gun apparently. Big surprise.

the video game episode was pretty good, but i still think that on a whole, they're jerkoffs

Enjoyed this episode, but outside of their usual rampant cursing and insulting they didn't do that great of a job proving their point.

I like how much of a hypocrite that fat guy was with his Fire Triangle.

"To make fire you need Fuel, Oxygen, and Heat." Ummm yah seeing that in primitive times, you needed Wood, oxygen and friction to make fire. Unless they had Shell stations back then that I'm unaware of.

Um...wood is fuel...and friction (a la rubbing two sticks together) creates heat. He was right about that bit, even if his wording was poor.

He was just wrong about everything else.

Sorry, they tried to ban Warner Brothers and shit saying it caused violent behaviour

Cartoons in the 80's and 90's were far more violent then alot of the soft crap these days, and i am not killing anyone.... yet/..

it is bullSHIT

sorry to me all this "tv causes violence" is simply an excuse for parents who have no control over their kids, period., blame it on everything but the actual problem!

Jack Thompson " Video Games are the Greatest threat to children since polio" lol wtf? did he really make an analogy of something that happened in real life as opposed to a fantasy world and expect people to take him seriously?

That's like saying. Don't throw your old car batteries away because it could poison the water supply and kill Oscar the Grouch.

Eat shoe and die!

The guy who said guns + video games = killers is really stupid. Especially since he owns guns himself. And guns were part of his retarded triangle.

As a gun owner (Romanian AKM, or AK-47 for those that know nothing about guns) and gamer, I find all of those anti video game people retarded.

I'd venture to say that was part of the point. Playing a video game doesn't mean you know what the fuck your doing as well. At least that's the way I took it.

That made me really want to try installing FEAR on my Win7 machine..

but I freakin can't find it....

Must kill......

I know for a fact that playing Fantasy RPG's all day helps me use my lvl 3 fireball spell IRL more effectively.

I've been playing HAWX all weekend and i'm pretty confident i can take on the entire US airforce if i can get my hands on an F22.

Pyro simulator!

Surprised there wasn't anything about Manhunt since the only reason to play that game (in my mind) is trying out all the various ways to kill people with different objects.

I didn't see the USMC guy help the kid or tell him to pull the weapon into his shoulder or anything.

When my dad taught me to shoot a shotgun when I was 12 or so, he told me eactly how to hold it so it didn't tear my shoulder up.

It was probably half the noise/shock of shooting a real gun that made him cry. I remember I was shocked the first time I shot an M16 in basic, wasn't expecting it to be that loud, and I was 20 years old at the time lol.

I've been playing Super Smash Bros. and I'm pretty confident that I could kick anyone's ass in an action figure fight. I'm such a menace to society.

precisely...everyone holds a gun wrong the first time they pick it up....whether it be a handgun or rifle. without proper instruction on how to handle the weapon, you will not be accurate, and have a good chance at hurting yourself more than anything down range.

no video game can teach you these things. so how can a video game alone raise super accurate hybrid human killing machines with instant response times? at best, video games raise downrange perception and response time - and an individual was properly trained outside of the "video realm" in how to handle a weapon. (sidenote: the properly trained probably won't go postal at their work or school either). Regardless, the game didnt teach them anything to promote the violence or enable the act. It is completely controlled by outside circumstances beyond the games...

Not only do I disagree with this argument against video games because of violence, I can barely comprehend their points about it. Usually I'm very good with seeing both sides to an issue despite my stance on the issue. I can recognize concerns and agruements even if I disagree...but I can NEVER make a fucking ounce of sense out of the sensationalism spewed over this particular topic...

I was disappointed they still referred to jack thompson as an attorney since he's been disbarred and all.

the videos are no longer available :(

Weak :(

I should have it downloaded at home soon enough... anyone know an easy way to stream video over the internet so I can watch it now? ;)

*EDIT* Apparently Winamp remote does video too, going to try that...

they sure liked getting footage of jack thompson feeding his fish...

They were just filming him. Why would someone feed their fish during an interview? Jack Thompson reminded me of a Bond villain except stupider, and without any charisma.

Videos are gone due to "Copyright claim by CBS." when I try to play them :(.

EDIT: Friend has it recorded, going to watch it... ;).

Just finished watching it... that was an excellent episode. They raised TONS of good points about a lot of things ranging from parenting to children learning the difference between fantasy and reality early, as well as research studies and what actual research was done/not proven by them. I *loved* the ending to it... hilarious and extremely accurate.

The profanity in Bullshit is what makes it great.
