I need a single gpu card. I want to get the best one out. I am gaming on a 720p 32" Dynex Monitor. However, my Dynex tends to force 1080p mode, so I probably need a card that can play at 1920x1200. Be nice if the gpu was quiet. I'd be running a gigabyte x48 board and a e7400 at 3.2-3.4.

If your screen is a 720p, then you wont be running 1920x1080. It'll be 1366x768 or something. What is your budget? nVidia's fastest is the GTX285 and ATI's the 4890, but both would be overkill for 720p.

correction nvidias fastest gpu is the new revised gtx 295

He asked for single GPUs, the 295 still uses SLI even though both GPUs are on the same card.

If you're using this on a 32" 720p screen quality is going to be pretty poor...and if you're running straight 720p that resolution is very low, you don't need a powerful card at all for that. You said your TV forces you to run 1080p and then scales it...I'd however look into getting a better monitor if you really want to take advantage of a high end video card.

gtx 285 is the single fastest. Costs ~330 new for a top tier, lifetime brand, XFX, EVGA or BFG.

The fastest best value card is the hd 4890, since you can often find for around 200 or less for an XFX, the comparible nvidia card is the gtx 275, which runs for ~220ish.

A gtx 260 would be overkill.I ran my old rig off of my 720 p tv sometimes and a 9800gtx was running COD4 like butter at that res.Dont waste money on a high end card when it wont do anything more then a $150 card will

He could pick up a good $100 card and run it just incredibly fine. We're talking 720p here which is 1280x720.

OP, why/how does your TV force 1080p? You just said it was a 720p TV so what's 1080p doing there?? Either way, buy a 4850.

A 4850 is more then enough. If your tv is 720p then no way is it forcing 1080p.You may mean 1080i which on a 720p tv is something funny.I cant remember the res but it's like 1920x 4-- something

Technically it is but I think he means single slot GPU.

he said "single GPU card."

"single slot GPU" in my mind would be a card that only took up one expansion slot (single wide, rather than double-wide), so i don't even know what the heck you're on about.

Technically he asked for a single-GPU card, not a single PCB card. You assumed single PCB, I assumed he doesn't want to mess with SLI/Profiles or deal with the cost a a dual-GPU card. You could still be right however.

I agree with the rest, GTX 285 is of course the fastest for Nvidia, HD 4890 for ATI. I'd definitely save the bucks though and go for a GTX 275 which when overclocked will be biting at the heels of a GTX 285.

Get a 4890 or a gtx260 core 216. The 4890 is a faster card, faster than two 8800gtx in sli for average frame rates and has a much better minimum frame rate. Will play practically anything on the market at 1080p let alone 720p.

The nvidia gtx260 core 216 is slower but not much so (and won't be noticeable at this resolution), it is a little cheaper. Do not spend the extra money for a 275 there is no need with your monitor.

You need a 100 to 150 dollar card for your monitor, the most in my mind I can justify spending with your monitor is 200. After that spend the money on something else, in this case a better processor will matter more for frame rates than a better gpu (due to higher minimum frame rates.)

If he is talking about the 32 inch dynex from the BB deal for 300, I have gotten mine to get to 1600x1200. I don't know how, but it did. I haven't managed a 1920x1080 as of yet though.

please show me a review where the 4890 is faster than 8800gtx sli. that would make the 4890 twice as fast as the 4850 which I know it isnt except in cases where a 512mb version of the 4850 runs out of vram.

Honestly? Forget about the video card and replace that Dynex. 32" at 720p is horrid visual fidelity for a PC game, and Dynex is literally one of the two or three worst quality brands. Buy a quality 24" or bigger monitor, or a Westinghouse 37" 1080p LCD. You'll thank me later.

Please note that cards that run multiple GPUs in a single "card" (295, 4870x2, etc) still work on boards that don't support sli or crossfire. Sli and xfire are only needed if you have two completely separate cards.

The best single GPU card is the GTX 285. The best single card is the GTX 295.

The best high end value for money cards are the 4890 and GTX 275. And everyone who mentioned the GTX 260 or 4850 are just plain wrong (or answering a different question).

the only time 4850 and gtx260 are mentioned is to say that either would be enough for 1280x720 which they basically are.

for that res gtx 260 and hd4850 are plenty.. don't listen to echn111

He asked for the best card and I gave him a straight answer. Not a patronising hand holding, under the assumption that the OP doesn't really know what he's asking.

At a low res, any card is decent. But keep in mind that there are a number of plasmas with native 720p screens that react far better to a true 1080p signal being sent through.
