YouTube Video Makes Airline Take Responsibility

FedEx is actually good about handling packages, probably because they really pay out claims given acceptable proof of value. UPS OTOH doesn't care one bit.

Great video and all, but these guys are IDIOTS. Why would they check their precious guitars on a passenger airline. EVERYONE is told when they check a fragile item on a passenger airline that the airline DOES not provide insurance for these items. The airlines make you sign a "Limited Release Form" that clearly states the carrier is not responsible for breakage. If I really cared about the guitar, I would've driven or shipped the guitar by FEDEX or UPS with insurance.

I agree. We do a LOT of shipping here. FedEx is generally pretty cool and our normal driver seems to actually care about his job and our stuff. UPS is a different guy every other day and they are usually lowlifes that don't care about anything, let alone your goods. We've had monitors delivered with forklift holes punched through them, accordioned boxes, you name it, from UPS. FedEx delivers a slightly damaged boxes from time to time but the goods are usually intact. We also deal with freight companies when moving around big machinery... some of those guys are like straight out of jail and really don't care about your equipment. I've seen them push a piece of machinery (worth about $500k) about as big as a car off the back of their flatloader and it flipped over. Good thing they have insurance. I wanted to make the delivery guys pay for it themselves as they are the ones pissed at life or whatever their problem is.

Come to think of it... maybe people just don't give a shit about ANYTHING anymore if it doesn't belong to them.

To start off, the rolex's were mine.
They were my aunts which she would have given to
my relatives as gifts for coming back to our home country.
My aunt is a jeweler (not sure what the job is called).
I was around 15-16 of age at the time. So I had little to no interest of the matter.

As for the proof of them being there, It was technically my luggage
but my aunt decided to put them there since she had little space
on hers. I don't have technical proof of it being there,
but I do have a first hand witness (me or my aunt) of it being placed inside.
Although I have no proof of seeing anyone actually do the "stealing"
other than having my lock clipped. Only the watches were stolen but my
clothes were not (of course, who wants 15-16 year old clothing anyway).

And I think that my aunt did file a report but I'm not sure how that turned out. (Aside from the fact that she never did get anything back).

As to why you are being so negative about my experience with airlines is a mystery to me.

The way I see it, the only thing the airline owed you, was for the replacement of the clipped lock as that falls under damage to your baggage. They would not have taken your bag if they knew they were going to be liable for the contents being worth in excess of $6000. Why should they? I guess they can start jacking up the prices of everyone elses checked baggage to cover losses of the people who decide they don't want to carry insurance on their own stuff, does that sound fair?

When I fly, nothing of value ever goes into checked baggage, period, even if it means I have to carry an uncomfortable 20lbs of glass and metal in my camera kit with me as carryon. If you are ok with losing it, check it in, just remember your reimbursement maximum is only like $500 a bag(whole bag has to be lost) or something like that. Your Aunt should have known better as a jeweler then to check in uninsured valuables, her fault, not the airlines. People are more likely to lose or get stuff broken in checked airline baggage then by USPS, yet they almost always insure their packages. As much as I have flown international and domestic, I have had more then my fair share of bad experiences from lost bags, damaged bags, flight delays, cancelled flights, spending nights in airports, being seated next to big fat, stinky guys who take up their own seat and part of mine. Despite all this, my valuables stay with me inflight and because of that I have never lost anything except clothing and a few travel souvenirs. I did have my Samsonite replaced(2 buckles on 1 side got sheared off, but the other clips held it together, nothing lost) courtesy of AA.

Lets face it, damage in transit happens and airlines are not UPS or Fedex. If people expect the same level of care, they are going to be limits on what can be checked in. No odd size baggage like god forbid a freakin guitar case. Valuables would have to be adequately bubble wrapped/packed in foam to prevent damage(try bubble wrapping your guitar and packing it in foam in an oversize box next time) and of course fully insured in order to get full reimbursement. If you had to do all this for all checked baggage, then maybe you can have the right to start casting stones at the airlines.

Airlines are not a damn cash cow which shit out money on demand, they have been losing money for years now. Only a handful are making any money.

Flying is outdated anyways. It is about time to start building speed trains from state to state.

Yes but who would ride them? Too many people want to drive their own vehicles because gas is still too cheap. The only reason it is so succesful in Europe is the truly outrageous price of gas there.

Fedex drivers own their own route and are independent contractors. Too many complaints, damaged or lost packages and their history. I don't know about UPS.

"I explained that I didn’t sign a waiver and that no waiver would excuse what was happening outside." What Dave (song writer) stated.

Sad but true, and now that America owns Iraq gas will continue to be under 4 bucks a gallon for a while.

WOW! Using this guys example, I can buy a busted 60's Stratocaster off ebay, throw it into a guitar case and check it in next time I fly. Fast Forward a couple a weeks later after my video makes its rounds on Youtube, I get my $8k check in the mail. It won't even be insurance fraud cause I didn't buy any. The jokes on them.

No thanks. I like driving my own vehicle listening to my own music, stopping when I want, you know... being free. I do not like being crammed into a metal tube like cattle with a bunch of smelly losers.

That part I don't believe. NO airline rep will accept a guitar without the passenger signing a "Limited Release waiver". No signature, no acceptance of baggage. These guys were just smart to do a video to capture the attention of United, but dumb to have checked their most precious asset. Would Picasso have checked his Mona Lisa? Clearly not.

Seen an expressive telescope (not mine) pass through one time on a trip. Lady took one look at it and passed it off without any additional paper work. So I can believe it can be done, but yes a waiver is needed.

Funny a waiver was never said by the United...unless Dave missed explaining that part.

Probably not, as he'd have stolen it. Having been painted a few hundred years before he was born and all.

There are idiots in every industry. I believe that the idiots are more plentiful than the smart ones anymore.I work for a moving company, and you would not believe the morons that I see every day. Not just our employees either. We get some real winners as customers too. Believe me when I say that the smart ones are truly outnumbered on planet earth.

Anyone know what I would get busted for if I booby trapped a briefcase with a spring loaded knife set to go off in the opening of said briefcase? would it count as assault with a dangerous weapon even if I wasn't there?

unfortunately it is all about intent

Heh, again like many of the others, not a fan of this kinda music but the quality and message (and utter catchiness) is going to ruin United. Obviously why now all of a sudden they are scrabbling hand over foot to get him to stop.

This just reminds me of my poor ol' Ultra mid-tower that I checked a few times when traveling cross-country. Eventually it got so banged up that the side panel no longer fit on it.

The best part was when they didn't even bother to unscrew the thumbscrews in the back...they just cut them or broke them off.

if you look on his website, it indicates that he's from nova scotia (canada). i was unaware that they were into country music

Yeah, shocking how his place of departure (Halifax), which was mentioned in the film, would also be near his place of residence...

As for country music in NS, music is a large part of life in the Maritimes. It's not altogether surprising that they'd be into music of all sorts, though one would expect country music to me more popular in Alberta ;) The artist however, doesn't seem to limit himself to just country, there's plenty of videos they've uploaded to show this.

Holy crap. Heck of a good song. Catchy tune, and will make me think twice about flying United, especially when packing my guitars. :D

Good that he got the issue solved, and clearly in an entertaining way. Although it's not nice that it took so long.

Yeah, never mind the intent of the guy opening your luggage to steal your stuff. The rights of the criminal trump the rights of the citizen in this day and age. Sad times...

I would think they could even hold you as a terrorist and send you to gitmo even if no one got hurt. Part of the TSA's job is to randomly inspect baggage. If it was found in your baggage they would have a case against you that you intentionaly tried to cause or kill a TSA worker. Forget about Bubba for a cellmate and say hello to Khalid Sheikh Mohamed for me.

I saw this yesterday on this site, when the video was at 530,000 views. Now it's probably over a million higher! Talk about a quick following.

They kept playing the video on Good Morning America this morning. I don't know if he was on there, but they did have a response from United saying they wanted to resolve the issue. GEE REALLY?!?! Now that 10,000,000+ people know about this, they want to resolve it?! Who would have guessed?!

Really though, this is the best thing that has ever happened to this guy, and you can tell that he knows it if you read his site. He went from being a small time musician to having his story heard by millions. I'm not really into his type of music, but I think the song was exceptional, and the video was hilarious. Props to this guy :D

Come to think of it... maybe people just don't give a shit about ANYTHING anymore if it doesn't belong to them.

Considering our economic mess is caused by people buying things they can't afford, I'd say people don't care either way.

or a Republican

How do you figure? Someone wants public transportation and apparently wants higher gas prices to force it... Doesn't sound republican to me... sounds commie. If it was higher gas prices for higher profit than I'd agree with you.

I thought we were discussing the differing points of view on who would want $4 and higher gas. Tree huggers would like it, the Republicans would hate it, in the short run at least.

Higher energy costs would actually be good for the economy in the long run as it would

1) Reduce comsumption($4 gas destroyed the SUV market)

2) spur developement and make alternatives like wind and solar power to become more viable, so that our money stays in America, instead of the $300 billion leaving every year.

Yeah but this is America and as much as I love capitalism, you and I both know the increased revenue would go to government programs and to corporate rich guys to buy more houses and yachts.

Nice music video. The funny thing is I bet he spent a lot more than $3,500 to make that video. But it was an investment to his music career and it looks like he's getting a lot of notoriety thanks to United breaking his guitar.
