I thought my search had ended with the Dell M1330, but I think I need something better than an 8400M GS. Any thoughts? I'm willing to spend $1,000 at most, and I want something that doesn't get too warm and doesn't make a lot of noise.

Thanks.

I don't think that person wants to game as much as I do...

An 8600 would be fine for me though.

I think if your willing to move up to a 15.4inch you will be much better off. plenty of slim and cheap systems with at least a 8600 class card.

I've been looking at laptops in roughly that range too (got my own thread to boot), and you're not really going to do better than GeForce 8400 / 9400 in a 13 or 14" laptop, and if you can: it'll be a damn sight more than $1000

15 and 17" are you best choices for gaming laptop

MSI has a GT620 model for $1100 with a 1050p 15" screen and a 9600 GT GPU, I think they have a slightly cheaper variant of the GT620 with a 768p screen.

Take a look at Sager too, again: if you accept a less-dense screen (something I can't do :-P) you should be able to get a 9600 GT for your price (in 15" trim).

ibuypower has 15" with 9600 GT and ATI 4650 for under $1000

pretty sure Asus has some stuff in that range too.

You can get a used 14 inch Thinkpad T61p for around $1000. Comes with Quadro FX 570m graphics, which is based off the 8600m GT.

Asus F6Ve 13.3" is based on a Radeon 4570, roughly 3300 in 3D Mark 2006, it is above the $1000 price range

Yes but it only has 64bit memory interface and not the full 128bit like the 15inch model has.

Dell Studio XPS 1340. Has 9400m + 9200m in hybrid SLI. I just bought one. I get about 120 FPS in CSS with everything maxed, and 2x AA and AF. 60 FPS with the same settings in TF2, and around 90 with those settings in DoDS. L4D gets about the same as TF2. COD4 runs pretty good as well too. I got mine for $900 in the Dell outlet.

Dell outlet? So you got it used?

Refurbished actually. I'm actually looking to sell it at this point. It's just too small for my needs. I got the LCD and motherboard replaced a few days ago due to some problems though. so it's basically new, lol. PM me if you're interested, I'm thinking around $950 shipped with a carrying case and mouse.

What's the noise and heat like on a 1340? My current HP laptop is like a fucking radiator with an exhaust, christ.

EDIT: Looks like Dell doesn't sell this anymore. Where can I still buy it?

www.dell.com/outlet

Items there are either refurbed or remanufactured, sometimes just dinged up with slight cosmetic damage, a busted box, dropped, etc. Either way, they're fully functional, "fixed" as required, and they come with the exact same warranty as buying a brand new product from Dell, and the cost savings cant be absolutely tremendous.

Example: currently the base model Latitude XT2 (the tablet) runs about $1999 or so out the door... you can get one from the Outlet for roughly $1039 most of the time, then just add RAM/hard drive as you see fit after the purchase to save even more. That's nearly 50% off the same hardware, in the same box, with the same goodies, and the same warranty.

The downside - if there is one - of using the Dell Outlet is the inventory sells so fast, if you see something you really like, you can "save it" in your cart but it'll only stay there a few minutes. If you do find something, you have to buy it basically right then and there or someone else will snag it.

Tremendous savings, great machines... you could do a lot worse, that's for sure. :D
