I'm looking to start wiring my place in the next few months and was wondering if anyone knew of any particularly "cool" (low power usage) switches. I've come across green switches, but I'm not sure if it's marketing or if there's any truth in there.

The motivation here is basically that the thing is gonna be on 24/7 and it can get pretty hot out here in the summer.

if you have the money i hear great things about the HP 1800-24g, i'm looking at getting one myself real soon, don't like having 2 8 port switches for the network LOL.

HP 1800-24G. I've got 1 and it's the coolest running switch I have. Touching it, it's hardly above room temp. I had it running in my garage last summer for something I was working on. It would get to about 115-120 in there and it never had a problem. It's about 72-73 in my home office where it's at now though.

I second the HP1800 series switches. They are also leaps & bounds better than the Netgear/Linksys/D-Link drivel.

Typical home usage, the dlink is more than fine. They are very low power / low heat switches.

Note, it does not have a wirespeed backplane although you will probably never remotely come close to hitting a bandwidth problem.

slightly off topic but still related, where can one find a good deal on a new 1800-24g? i will only use ebay as last resort even though people want almost retail on there even.

If you get one with a fan it will be noisier but plenty cool running .

HP or Dell are both good options though. Netgears, though I love them and use them all the time, tend to run hot so I would stay away.

I'll 2nd this.. I have a 48port netgear running at a clients and it is hot to the touch. It also doesn't help that the network closest is in the same area that the thermostat is ran by women.. Temperature all over the board..

I have a dell 3024 at home. The fans are going out so they are loud, but they aren't so bad. If I wire up my house putting ethernet in rooms that would be my first choice as the switch for it

I have a Dell 2724 at home that I use. Never skips a beat. 24 ports of 10/100/1000 and 2 SFP slots.

These can be had for under $200 on ebay, I snagged mine for $140 shipped. These are also available in smaller versions. I have 5-8 open ports left on mine and have a drop in the areas that need network. Eventually I plan to do a few drops up stairs and in my daughter's room.
