Have Vista x64 (Ultimate) set up nicely on a 1TB C: drive. Not raided or anything.

I then have x3 1TB that I have set up as a 3TB Striped volume using Vista Disk Management (no hardware or software RAID used - just the Vista "Dynamic Disk" functionality ).

Now I want to reinstall Vista x64 Ultimate on my 1TB C: drive as need to replace the motherboard. If I plug the same three drives in to the new motherboard will my 3TB Striped volume reappear in the new Vista install?

I know the following is true of server products, but I have not verified this on Vista myself and searching isn't turning up useful information.

Microsoft does not allow you to use a striped, spanned, or RAID-5 volume as a system volume (ie, the volume you install Windows on). For recoverability reasons, they only allow Windows to be installed on basic disks, GPT disks, dynamic simple volumes, or dynamic mirror volumes.

Thanks. But not going to reinstall Vista to the striped volume. Going to reinstall to my Drive C:. I just would like to know that my 3TB striped volume will be "preserved" (ie, that the new Vista install knows that three SATA disks make up a single striped volume and get recognised).

Thanks. I'll give it a whirl. Might try installing the new motherboard first without reinstalling as they're both P45 chipsets so should work.

Just reporting back. Both the Vista reinstall and a later install of Window 7 recognisd the striped disk without issues. Very clever.
