With the machine in my signature, will stepping up to a 4870 allow me to max this out or close to it at 1680x1050?
4890 maybe, but you'll be seriously limited with that Q6600 at stock clocks.
We decided to release an updated patch 1.02 build 58134, please visit
http://www.arma2.com/support/updates...4.html?lang=en
for more information about the patch and available download options.
Few notes:
* our main reason to release an updated 1.02 version is newly implemented full support for anti-aliasing in this build that we believe increases visual quality significantly without any major performance impact
* this patch is compatible with all previously released versions (1.00, 1.01 and 1.02)
* all versions 1.02 remain compatible in multiplayer and also savegames from various versions 1.02 are compatible so the transition process to this updated version 1.02, build 58134 should be as seamless as possible for all users
Change log for build 58134 from the previous patch 1.02:
* Fixed localVRAM detection on Vista x64 systems with 8 GB RAM and more
* Enabled MSAA in Video options
* Fixed possible crash in Radio target reporting for NULL target
* Fixed DOF always enabled on game start.
* Added safeguard againg frequent reset into RequestFlushMemory as well.
* Improved Cannot create surface Rpt messages.
* Relaxed reset recovery conditions to that "profylactic" reset happens less often.
* HC command - enabled page selection
* Commandline parameter -netlog available in retail version again
* Editor fix: modules info serialization
* Fix: weapon fire effects in MP

you won't be able to run the game at max settings, even with a 4890 (unless you can tolerate framerate in the teens). like SoFGR said you're Q6600 is your limiting hardware. i also agree with Bigbacon, this game feels very fluid at 30+fps.
without dumping the money into an i7 build, what would you suggest? 4870 + new cpu?
There are some great deals on 4890's right now, and you should be able to OC the 6600 quite easily.
no it aint. 3rd person lets u see more of your surroundings
i try playing the demo and i get this error message
i tried reinstalling and got the same message
I got the same error in XP...help???
BTW a couple of people so far have had a launch error with the demo: "Demo failed to launch, X3DAudio1_6.dll was not found" You need to make sure you have the latest Directx 9 Redistributable installed: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-B1E8-248D43270D5F/directx_mar2009_redist.exe
Performance is horrid on my machine with the demo, granted it's older, C2D T9300, 4GB, Sli'd 8800GTXm' on my XPS m1780 Laptop. It's just not playable at all for me.
What are the nvidia folks using for drivers?
New patch:
I'm using the latest ones for Win 7 186.18. Make damn sure you turn off Ambient Occlusion, AA and AF on Auto, and Max prerendered frames to 8 (apparently it helps but I didnt notice a huge difference).
I'm playing at 1920x1200 lowest settings / 7-8k view distance. Q6600 @ 3.2 GTX285. Situational Awareness and playability are more important to me than shadows and AA.

Anybody know if this new patch is available for the Steam version yet? As in, if I go home and download the game at lunch today, will I be able to have AA tonight?
Whats your fps because i have the same specs. And when you mean low, how low?
most ppl here need to get rid of their e-penis and understand that high/very settings in this game are for "future hardware" only !! heck i even play with terrain detail set to very low in order to remove grass and post proscessing effects disabled so there's no HDR DoF and motion blur to restrain my already bad visibility due to crappy AA support ( i got that disabled too since it can't get rid of all jaggies no matter the setting )
Here's my settings http://img524.imageshack.us/i/armasettings.jpg/ http://img395.imageshack.us/i/benchmark.jpg/ ok I agree it looks like crap with all those jaggies (this is not 1999 anymore), but there are many deeper flaws in this game that make want to unistall the demo and go back to original OFP or ArmA 1 with cold war rearmed mod
Specs : E6600 @ 3.3ghz EVGA 192 @ 676 / 1158 / 1457 182.50 forceware 4gigs of DDR2 XP SP2
Eagle156 has totally nailed it for me http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1034280922&postcount=649
Unless you do own one of the aforementioned imaginary graphics cards and a 5GHz Core i9 CPU then you just won't be able to run Arma II smoothly at a high resolution at maximum detail settings. It is worth pointing out though that Arma II is one of the few games that really benefits from a quad-core CPU and a powerful graphics card - put that in your pipe and smoke it Nvidia!
Bohemia Interactive has a history of supporting it's games with patches and free downloadable content for several years after release, and we have no reason to expect Arma II to be any different.
Conclusion
Given the shortage of hardcore PC-only games these days it's refreshing to see an independent developer such as Bohemia Interactive striving to achieve such a lofty goal - that of a fully immersive military simulator playable on a standard (albeit powerful) PC, not a supercomputer. One can well imagine the technical and gameplay compromises that would have had to been made if Arma II was a multi-platform title for both PC and consoles. As it is, the game struggles to run at a decent frame and uses pretty much every keyboard combination you can think of.
Ultimately, while Arma II isn't the most realistic tank or flight simulator, these elements are of secondary importance compared to the infantry warfare gameplay. What's more, I can't remember the last time a company released a proper tank or flight sim on the PC, let alone one that simulated combined-arms warfare.
Yes, Arma II still has a fair number of bugs, yes it runs like a one legged drunken horse from time to time but no game, civilian or military has come this close to simulating the terrifying, vulnerable world of the modern infantryman. Poor bloody infantry indeed.
No, only Steam today. Is it released in stores today too!?
Despite having created the English language, the guys over at bit-tech supposedly don't know it. Bah!bit-tech said:Bohemia Interactive has a history of supporting it's games with patches and free downloadable content

some interesting parts:
Reviews like this make me wonder if they even bothered to play the game for more than a couple hours.

Well, I tried ARMA 2 after all the hype here and I have to say i'm really dissapointed. The game is incredibly broken. When I do the First Aid Training and I put the guy on my shoulders and carry him, he literally slowly slides down my body onto the ground. The whole body glitches through my body. I also can not move when I pick him up. When he slides through me, I am stuck in that spot..
At least with this game. It is not worth it.this really is your best bet, without going to an i7 build. you still won't be able to max the game out. i'm still toying with going to an i7, but i'm having a difficult time justifying the cost. when it's all said and done i probably will just keep truckin along with my Q6600.

It still runs like shit.
This is on a fresh install of Windows 7 build 7234.
Everything runs smooth as butter, but Arma 2 runs like doodoo.
I'll install fraps again and give it another go.
