A few months ago I was pretty into WAW but I stopped playing after I re-installed my operating system. I just reinstalled it and restored my profile and had a look at my stats. Apparently I have nearly twice as many deaths as I do kills. A few things I noticed while playing was that most often in hardcore mode it took me too long to recognize friend from foe, and I usually ended up getting killed. Second, I tended to try to unlock the stuff for the trench gun, and I wasn't very good at it. I usually missed at range and by the time I sprinted up to someone I was dead. Third, I tended to do my own thing and run around on my own, which also led to me dying. Now I am a little hesitant to get back into it, seeing that I suck pretty bad, but I did enjoy the rush of playing.

My question is, is there a good way to improve my skills apart from just finding a server and throwing myself into the grinder? What do the players here do? Thanks for any help.

to help you figure out which guy is on your team and which one isnt, I would try Team Deathmatch with FF off. #1 you can play it alot, unlock guns etc and level up. which will also help you practice to know who is your on team and who isnt. If you wanna play hardcore TDM you can, but its alot harder to play hardcore then it is regular TDM.

Thats how I did it, but i did this in COD4 before i played COD5. I do admit it is hard to see who is a teammate and who isnt, but I just played alot of TDM, then I got used to who is who.

Good luck, and happy hunting :)

Thanks. I see that quite a lot of the TDM servers are hardcore now, correct? And is FF a server-side setting? Thanks again.

Yea there are alot of hardcore TDM. But every once in awhile you will find a 24/7 TDM non hardcore server that is usually always full. FF is a serverside thing. Its friendly fire. You dont want to play on a FF on server if you are trying to practice figuring out who is on your side and who isnt. :p

Something else that might help.... find a map you like and really play the shit out of it. Knowing the choke points and favorite camping sites (of other players) as well as where to take cover, etc. can really help. I haven't unlocked MP in COD5, but I've played COD4... too much. I absolutely suck at some maps, but am really good at some too. Which weapon and perks you use in a given map make a real difference as well - experiment. Sometimes the most obvious choice is not the best.

Most of all, don't get too frustrated. Remember, there are people whose life evolves around gaming (or just a game) and unless you devote your life as well, you will likely get owned by them. Don't worry about it. The more pissed off you get, the worse you do, so just have fun - you'll certainly get better! Just keep at it...

Happy fragging :p

I hate TDM. I prefer to play everyone for themselves, then you don't have to worry about friendly fire. Just kill everyone..muhahaha.

What to run out into the middle of the field without dying? Run with smoke and run from cover to cover in short distances. Even without smoke, its very possible.

The biggest help is: Don't be in a rush!

Before you run for another spot. Stop...look around out the windows or holes you can see, see where the fire is coming from, watch the other nuts run out in front of you and see where the shots come from. To keep from dying a lot, you need to know what's around you and what's around your next cover spot.

I don't have a great kill/death ratio, but I'm a lot better than I was when I first started playing WaW. It's how I played COD4 and was pretty good at clearing out the area and capping the flag in dom.

The two weapon types I have the biggest problem with are the trench gun and a bolt action rifle. I love both weapon types but when I use them I most often get shot like a dog. For the trench gun, I have to run up to someone and hope they don't see me, and for the bolt action rifles, if I'm even remotely out in the open it's a death wish because the rate of fire is so slow. What situations do the players here use these guns in, and what are some pointers for proper use? Thanks for the replies so far.

I use the bolt action a lot with iron sights. Unless your in a spot and setup to shoot, run around with the pistol. I've got a lot of kills with it and there is one guy in our community who is something like a pistol expert. I've never seen someone kill so many with a pistol on both WaW and COD4. Also, don't forget that any perks you have for your bolt action transfer over to the pistol (at least that was the conclusion we came to when a few of us were talking about it the other night). Having smoke helps too. It keeps you from being picked off by snipers or others that see you if you have to cross a large open area.

Also, considering the following loadout:
Gewehr 43
.357
Stopping Power
Last Stand (VERY helpful if you play with friends)

The Gewehr is like a semi-auto, high cyclic rate, sniper rifle. It does massive ammounts of damage and is very fast with little kickback. It also has EXCELLENT iron sights. Every single class I have has the Gewehr. Since switching, my normal K/D has gone from 1.3 to around 2.5.

Yea I second the Gewehr 43. I havn't unlocked the .357, but I did pick one up off the ground. While it does a better job of stopping people, the rate of fire and reload are just not worth it.

Any of you use the Type 99 as a machine gun? I like it but the iron sights are hard to use on this particular weapon.

Bumping this instead of starting a new thread...please excuse my noobness!

I am new to PC gaming, but not to COD. I really enjoy playing mulitplayer but there are somethings I don't know, like server rules? Is there any where I can go to tell me what is proper gaming etiquette for joining a server and playing?

For example I was playing last night and the rules kept popping up on the side saying for new players to read the !rules before playing on the server, but I had no idea how to get to the rules! I don't even know how to type messages while playing? I see other people can as the messages scroll on the left side...what am I missing??

The server rules are what come up in the messages from "console". Just follow them as best you can.

Well before playing you can spectate and see what server messages pop up then when they repeat and you understand them, then go ahead pick a side and play.
If your not able to spectate at first, pick a side, spawn then change team and choose spectate.

I would hope good servers will at least scroll some of the more import rules, like those that get you kicked/banned. I think it's pretty much universal that team killing on purpose and mouthing off when asked to stop something will get you at least kicked pretty quick, if not banned.

Use "t" to type in game chat as that is the default key.
The clan/community tags of the server your in should be on the bottom of the score list in brackets "[ ]". Looks for players with these same tags as they are the ones who run the server(s).
Don't complain about the rules, it's their server, not yours.

Always remember that your in someone's server who's clan/community members have put up their money out of their back pocket to have the server out there for others to enjoy. While you might not agree with the way they run it, it is still their server they paid for and have been gracious enough to allow others to play on it. What would you do if you invited someone into your house and they destroyed the place while you were there?

If all else fails, ask and be specific about it. Otherwise they will tell you to go to the website, which I hope they tell you. Usually, you'll get warned before you get kicked if you violate rules. If it was an accident, apologize about it as it will show them that you're not there to cause problems, and try to keep from doing it again as best you can.

Last advise is be conservative when you get on a server you're unfamiliar with. Best to watch others and see what they are and are not getting warned about. This is what I do when I go to other servers as since I'm in a community, I'm also representing us when in other servers.

I play in non-hardcore matches and consistently rank near the top. I won't say im an amazing player but i can hold my own.

I recommend taking a bolt action rifle and stopping power and extreme conditioning. Practice using the iron sights to kill people under fire. Of course, since your rate of fire is miserable compared to everyone else, taking cover, leaning around corners, moving quickly, and staying on the move is key to success. If you can start getting better with this loadout, you can easily switch to a Gewehr or Thompson (my two favorites short of the kar98) and be even MORE successful.

Building accuracy with your bolt action rifle is the key to playing, in my opinion. Any idiot can empty a drum magazine to kill someone, but someone that can drop you with one or two shots will be far more useful.

What files do I need to backup for waw and cod4 when reinstalling games on new pc?
