I am looking to swap out my stock cooling for the Scythe Mugen 2 has anyone here had any dealings with this cooler? I have read a couple of reviews and it gives some of the other more popular cools a good run for their money at a fraction of the cost.

Outstanding cooler. In my opinion the fact that it beats, matches or is close to the top 3 spots in pretty much every test Ive seen at the price, makes it the best bang for the buck cooler.

I'll be fitting my new Mugen 2 to my new Q9550 the day after tomorrow, I'll let you know! It is very big though, much more so than photos suggest, so make sure it will fit in your case before you order one...

I've been running a Mugen 2 on my i7 for roughly 5 months now, it's a great cooler for the price.

I've been able to achieve 4.0 Ghz on my i7 with good solid temps using the Mugen. My only complaint is really the bitch that is mounting this cooler. :p If you can get past that, you should be in good shape. :)

Crackbone,

I'm interested in this cooler for the i7 too. What kind of temps are you getting at 4.0GHz, during OCCT or Prime?

I've got the Thor's hammer, and just realized that the 4 surface heatpipes don't really run accross the cores the way I would like them and have to orient them in a different manner. I have to turn the cooler in a way that the hot air won't exhaust out the back in order to get the heat pipes to work in the best way. Right now I'm running at 75-80C on a D0, that's at low Vcore (1.28-1.3V) too!

The flat base on the Mugen 2 is probably better for my current setup.

Let me know. Thanks!

I put my order in yesterday I will report back with my findings. My goal is to be able to run 3.8-3.9 and cores be under 80.

I'm @ 1.35 on the Vcore, @ 4.0 Ghz. My idle is in the low 40s (Antec 1200 case + Mugen2). My load is 80C. I think that's acceptable, considering it's summer, high V, high clock.

The Mugen I received was a mirror shine on the bottom, no lapping, no issues. The only thing, as I've said before ,that sucks about this cooler is the mounting process. It's a bitch, and there's really no other way to describe it.

Just a word of warning, if you want to use this cooler, be prepared for a somewhat frustrating mounting process. Oh, and once you get it mounted, you'll never want to take it back off. :p (It's not TERRIBLE, but it's defnitely time consuming. I'd allow yourself at least an hour to get it on properly. )

Yeah I heard about that mounting thing. 80 is not bad at all for summer.

I looked through the mounting, but I can't imagine it being that much worse than the Thor's hammer, I got the DFI UT board too, which has tall heatsinks galore, and Xigmatek had to supply a special tool just get that puppy on, it took me an 1/2 hour the first time, but did the board and cooler re-mounting last night in 15 mins.

I'm hoping that my AS5 just needs a few more cycles, but if I don't get results by this week the Thor's hammer is going back.

I wasn't happy with seeing a few shiny impression marks on my processor. That's a tell tale sign that the metal ridges between the heatpipes have contact "priority" over the heatpipes, so the mirror base plate may do me good. I've been happy with my scythe's in the past, although I did have a shuriken with a concave base.

Great cooler. Mounting is very solid, but like others said, it is a pain. I get around 60-63c under load with Intel Burn test @3.8Ghz on my Q9550. My ambient temp is around 72F. I just leave the fan full speed. The noise has not been a factor for me.

I get ~72C load under OCCT on my i7 920 @ 4.0 1.34v. I used X23-7783D thermal paste instead of AS5 this time (not sure if it works better or not). I replaced the stock mugen II fan with a scythe s-flex 1200rpm. I will say I hate how the mugen II mounts, it's a pain to put on without three hands, and you have to pull everything (mobo, gpus, cabling etc), just to remove or re-seat the cooler.

Silversierra,

The temps of 72C under OCCT are they for 4.0GHz on a closed case?

I just did an OCCT run with HT on at 4.0GHz, 1.33 Bios, for 20 mins and my 920 went 90C!!! In a closed case with blowhole (100CFM fan) and without HT on I got 77 or so.

The Thor's hammer has potential, but I'm not too keen on seeing the non copper parts make marks (light scratches, nothing major) on my 920 Heatspreader. I've loosened and remounted, and re-AS5'ed.

OCCT with HT on and no case panel got me 80-83C at 4.0GHz.

72 with HT on at 4.0GHz case closed would be... Uhh... Case closed for me...

Let me know about the conditions you ran it under. Thanks!

I'm hoping I can get this chip cooled down, I'm really considering goin' H20 again... This processor just did a linpack (within OCCT) with 90% of 12GB DDR3 for an hour with no errors at 4.0GHz, so I'm pretty psyched to get this thing running.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the specifics. I have HT off, otherwise my max is 3.6ish to keep in the mid 70C range. I also have turbo boost off, but the rest of the cpu features on. I know people say HT off is like "cheating" or "that you might as well be using c2q," but I find I get slightly better results in games with 4ghz HT off, than 3.6ghz HT on. My case is an Antec 300, I'm running it closed, with the back and top fans on "low" and one front 120mm at low (1200rpm). I'd imagine if I would crank my fans and use a high flow fan on the cpu I could do a tad better, but I like a quiet machine. :)

I have a coolermaster 590CM case and a asus P5Q PRO mobo
i just got a Q9550 cpu and my ninja mini push pins fell apart i need a new cooler
i like this coolers prerfoamnce but will it fit ? and or is this there a mini verison of this cooler yet ?

I have one, very good cooler, but very big. Almost covers my ram slots on my Asus P5W DH Deluxe.

So I'm now in the middle of my first OC attempt with my new Q9550 and the Mugen 2. So far at 3.6GHz (425x8) at stock volts (I'll play with that later), 4Gb Crucial Ballistix PC6400 @ 850MHz, 2.0 Vram.

Temps under Prime95 load: 64, 58, 60, 59 (CPU is 49) with mobo controlling the cpu fan - it only gets as high as 879 rpm, so if I decide to go for a bigger OC then I'll just set the fan to full...

Undecided whether to reapply tim and reseat (I used MX-2), or if I can live with these temps. Early days yet, so we'll see if I decide it's worth the hassle of dismantling the entire case!!

I just installed mine on my i7 yesterday and I was around 71-73C after about 5m of Core Damage @3GHz stock voltage. I have it at a low clock because I didn't want to try anything with the stock cooler. I'll try higher clocks when I get a chance. I'm idling at around 39-41C. Does that seem normal? I'm wary that I may have botched the thermal paste when I was trying to screw down the heatsink. The HS is on there nice and tight now, but I think it may have made contact with the CPU, spread out the paste and lifted back off during install. I don't really want to reapply the paste because I'll have to take my whole mobo out again!

Hi guys, after looking at all of the named best budget coolers, I'm considering the
Scythe Mugen 2
Xigmatech dark knight
sunbeam core contact

the last one looks to need an i7 mounting adapter.
I haven't found a review comparing them all, any idea which is best?

planned build:
core i7 920 D0 OC to 4GHz CPU
Asus P6T SE motherboard
Antec P182 case
2x supertalent ultradrive ME SSD raid0
2x 1tb 7200 WD
mushkin 6-7-6-18 1600 3x2GB RAM
corsair CMPSU-850tx

I also had problems finding any decent comparisons on these coolers. From what I can see on the Xigmatek website, the Dark Knight does not fit on the i7 socket; the Mugen comes already with the 1366 adapter. I chose it because of the reportedly good temps on Q9xxx quads and i7's (so I can upgrade my cpu and keep the Mugen), and the price. Be warned, though, it is very big and very heavy, and installing the mounting bracket is a pain, but since I don't plan on removing it for a few years until my next upgrade it's not an issue for me....

I can't speak for the Sunbeam myself, but I'm really happy with the Mugen 2 so far. With a 3.6GHz oc on my Q9550 core temps hover between 56-60 degrees C now that I've lowered the Vcore (Prime95, 10 hrs and running)....it's also very quiet, even at full load I can't hear it over my under-volted Yate Loons.

The Dark Knight does fit the 1366 socket.

Compatibility: All IntelSocket 775 CPU Core2 Extreme/Quad/Duo Pentium Extreme Edition / D Celeron D All Intel Socket 1366 CPU Core i7

I had this cooler as my buy for a few days until I found the M2. I agree with others the mounting of this cooler is such a PAIN its not even funny. Its one of those one shot to get it right deal because redoing it again would force you to remove your motherboard.

As of right now I am letting my TIM setup a bit before over clocking but I can say just the cooler alone has dropped my temps 30c at stock speeds.

I heard the asus P6T had hole for 775 style coolers so the sunbeam core contact may still be in. Only issue is it appears to only have a 3 wire fan.

These coolers will probably get reviewed in the upcoming HasrdOCP roundup, too bad it's so far away!
