OS 3.0, first impressions

I ike 3.0 but damn it's lagging a lot. Spotlight lags everytime use it after coming out of standby. When I flick right it lags as it's appearing. The Settings app takes a few seconds to launch.

Did they add the iPod track shuffle by shaking the phone in 3.0? I think so. Anyhow, after I shook the phone to shuffle, it's not showing album art while the track is playing. Guess I'll try a reboot.

Edit: Still jacked... Shows the artwork in landscape mode, but nothing in portrait while the tracks are playing. Nice, crApple! The phone seemed to boot up slower also.

If I have a bluetooth stereo in my jeep (Kenwood KDC-BT838U) does that mean I can stream music to my head unit without having to plug in the iPod cord? Or is bluetooth stereo a seperate type of bluetooth (i've only ever used it for making/recieving calls)?

For those with the iPod Touch, you can actually download the 3.0 software from Apple for free here. (This is for 2nd Gen iPod Touch and yes, it's hosted on Apple's own servers.) Link for 1st Gen iPod Touch.

To install:
Plug into your computer, open iTunes.
Select your iPod
Hold 'Shift' while clicking Restore
Search for file, continue as indicated

I'm enjoying 30 on my iPhone though. As others have said, most of these features should have been implemented from the start, but it's great to finally see them on the platform. Copy/Paste works very well and easier than I thought it would be.

I believe those links are against TOS of Apple and per the terms of this forums that can be consider WAREZ/Illegal software. Bans have happened for less. I'd recommend you edit your post while you still can.

so uh.... for the people that upgraded to the new os, can you search web pages?

No. Why would spotlight search web pages?
Spotlight is a local search.

If you need to search a web page, there's a browser with a google search in it.

There's also the google.app that searches web pages.

no, not searching the internet, I mean searching individual webpages (ctrl+f) for specific keywords.

local search is ok I suppose, but having the ability to search a page would of been key :( edit: right now the only way to do it is via a second website and it's very counterproductive (think viewmymessage.com)

I have the same lag with Search coming out of standby which is annoying. My settings app does take a second or two but it doesn't seem any different then the previous OS.

Search works rather well. I like that they allowed us to customize what it actually searches.

I like the update to the Stock app. Voice memos...well maybe I'll find a use for it someday. Cut/Copy/Paste though is a friggin godsend.

Oh and AT&T can kiss my ass when it comes to tethering and MMS.

That would be a function of the Safari browser then, not spotlight.

Which I agree, it should be something they implement

on 2.2 I had no jailbroken my phone (company phone), but now with 3.0, and tethering being currently buried, I am planning on using ultrasn0w (supposed to be released tomorrow) to jailbreak it, to get at the tethering.

anyone have any info on this? I know the suspicion is that AT&T is just trying to figure out how to screw us all over, and I'm not arguing against that assumption.

any performance difference .. ( on last years 3g ) ?

Performance differences in what way? 3G download speed is the same. Some people report that wifi performance on the 3GS has increased over the 3G, but it's unknown whether or not that's due to OS 3.0 or the new hardware in the 3GS. Opening applications (Messages, Contacts, etc) is much snappier on OS 3.0: the performance enhancements they promised with OS 2.0 finally arrive.

Overall performance seems to have been given a shot in the arm, but full performance enhancement will require buying a 3GS, since it has more RAM and a faster CPU over the 3G.

The gf upgraded her iPhone 3G last night to 3.0 and I must say, it's been a good experience. Landscape keyboard ftw. My big hands have way more accuracy with it. Copy/paste is nice (about time), and other things are nice too (Google search bar in Safari is new I think). I should have more to say tomorrow after I get my 3G S. :) But yeah, 3.0 is definitely a solid upgrade.

So, I had no issues upgradeing my 3G.

Boot is a little slower, yes. but in general, I swear my netspeed is better, apps seem to open faster. I was getting, according to the speedtest.net app, over 2Mbps with 5 bars of 3g. I never had the test app before, so not sure, but email, (gmail ) loaded allot faster, and web browsing, even from the same location ( signal strength, location ) than prior to the upgrade

I swear the screen is a little more crisp..maybe a delusion, but it does "seem tighter"

All in all, seems good. supposedly a bunch of security fixes too, so thats good.

you dont even need to jailbreak it to enable tethering :D go to www.modmyi.com and you should see the directions in one of the top most "news" stories.

however, apparently O2 (uk) found out about this and is giving people a stern warning not to use it. They said that they'll either charge you extra or drop your service if they find out. I'm sure ATT will announce a similar plan shortly if they havent already

edit:

with that said, I'm going to stick with version 2.2 and PDAnet for a month or two.

I've been running 3.0 since beta 1, the final is a little bit snappier and the reception in weak 3G areas is much improved over the beta release. Overall it's not really mindblowing since copy and paste should've been there to begin with. The thing I'm looking forward to are all the new addons since Apple now allows to use the charge port to connect peripherals. Tom Tom FTW.

No I'm from the states. I swear they said it's a new feature in the new up date.

It is. OS 3.0 has built-in support for MMS.

The trouble is that AT&T needs to manually enable MMS on every iPhone account in order for the feature to work, and they won't get around to that until later this summer.

since update to v3.0 my iPhone is much slower, glitches a lot. Mms is nice, copy past not so easy to use but its not hard eider. The only reason why i didn't go with jailbreak because it was to slow/glitch and i hate that!! now i have official update and does the same thing ( not cool apple not freaking cool @ all )

ps
i thought we are going to have video rec with this update (3g)? and turn gps. Or its only with (3gs) ??

Slower in what way? What kind of "glitches?" 3.0 should give you faster speed both when browsing the web via wifi and opening apps.

3GS only. Video recording requires new camera hardware, thus the 3G cannot do it.

I'd be interested to find this out as well. I do expect it to be slower than 2.x was, since there's more stuff/functions that will be running on it but not sure how much slower.

for video recording, just wait until you can jailbreak it and use one of the many video recorders off of cydia. :) I'm still a little pissed that apple didn't include support for the last 2 generations (I wouldn't care if we didn't get video editing)

3.0 is actually faster than 2.0. Apps open faster and web browsing speeds are quicker, though it seems like booting takes a few seconds longer.

Warez or Illegal software? What are you talking about? It was the 3.0 software HOSTED by APPLE themselves but it doesn't matter anymore as they have removed the links.

Any software that is being given away by a third party (yourself), but not intended to be given away is considered WAREZ no matter where it is hosted.

On my 2nd Gen iPt, I notice volume is quite a bit louder through headphones and the built-in speaker. Turning it up all the way is unbearable now but wasn't before. As for speed and performance, I do not notice that it's any snappier but everything seems to be working smoothly for me.

I find stuff to be a tad bit faster, mailand stuff definitly is faster. Boot, as mentioned seems a bit slower. all in all, fine.

wow.... just.... wow
