Ok, so I have bought into the hype, and I need a new phone anyway, so I plan to get the new iPhone. My questions:

1. I see two data plans, Individual and Enterprise. As far as I can tell, the enterprise allows exchange server connections and Individual doesn't. Any other important differences?
2. Texting: Can you use like an IM client to text?
3. Did you end up texting more once you got iPhone?
4. How well does WiFi connection work?
5. Anything else a person should know on data plans etc...?

Thanks.

1. Not that I know of. I've been using the regular data plan for the past few years with no major complaints.

2. Like AIM? Yes however it doesn't run in the background so you wont know if you got a new IM unless you open the program and login

3. Yes and no. Since it doesn't support MMS it's kind of moot, but it's still nice to txt when you don't feel like talking

4. eh, it's so-so... it's not bad, but it's not great either. The signal is usually pretty weak compared to my netbook (for instance). If you're close to the router, it's not bad at all.

5. it's expensive. Together with my discount, the data plan and the extra text message service (I was getting hit with overages) my bill is around 110 a month. Watch out in the future too, I can imagine that we'll see ATT starting to crack down on the amount of data used.

1. Not really.
2. Sure, but only while logged in directly - it doesn't background. Yet (this changes in 3.0).
3. Absolutely. 1500+ a month.
4. great, except for WEP + shared key. WEP with an open key works great, but the shared key doesn't.
5. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Thanks! On point 5, with my discounts, data and voice (individual and 450 cheapo) plans come to $50 a month plus taxes.

Any other gotchas to look out for?

1) I have the individual data plan and i use exchange all the time.

2) You can, and you won't waste any SMS "credits" if you do it that way (the recipient will, though)

3) no. Had it for almost a year, and I think i've never sent more than 10 texts a month.

4) WiFi works decently well, though it does seem a bit slower than a laptop/desktop connection. could be just me though.

The 16 Gig Black 3G S. If I decide I need the 32 gig version, I can have my gf buy it and trade. ;)

Exchange ActiveSync connections are just SSL connections and there isn't really anything special about the connection itself besides the heartbeat between the Exchange server and your device, so there is no way for AT&T to filter this. Maybe packet behavior, but you could always be connected to a hosted provider and using it for personal mail.

For my 450 plan with data and 200 texts, my plan runs around $67 after taxes with my work's 19% discount now. My discount just increased this past month.. yay! So check with your work and/or school to see if they have an AT&T discount. If you want to find out you can go here: http://www.wireless.att.com/businesscenter/ and type in your work/university e-mail address.

Totally didn't think about that. Just checked my email and it qualifies. So I'm using it when I purchase my 3G S in the next few weeks; upgrade from the original.
