I'm working on a friends laptop (HP Pavilion zvt5000) in which Windows runs super slow on it. Instead of attempting to do a clean install of Windows XP I want to install Ubuntu on the laptop since she is not really computer savvy. The BIOS setup states that it is a P4 3Ghz, with 384mb of RAM (128 dedicated to video). I'm wondering if Ubuntu would be the best option and if so which version number? Also will the wireless card work in Ubuntu in the HP?

Thanks for your thoughts

Given the low RAM on that laptop, I would give Xubuntu a try. Its updated to 9.04 levels and running XFCE which is less of a system load for an older PC like that.

Since your friend isnt computer savvy, i'd also recommend Xubuntu. XFCE is nice and light...

... but, if you teach her enough, try Arch!

as asked before does Xubuntu have support for wireless cards?

For the cards Linux supports natively, the support is great, but for those that don't, you'll have to mess around with ndiswrapper, which I've found to be quite hit and miss.

Short answer, it depends on what card you're talking about.

Seems like I'm going to have to mess with installing a driver for the wireless card. Has anyone used the GUI form of NDISwrapper? Ndisgtk and NdisConfig?

Well you all were right Xubuntu runs great on her system. It's very snappy and clean. The only thing I'm having problems with is getting the wireless to work. If anyone has the INF file for this computer that would be great as it seems that it doesn't want to work. Also is there a utility to detect wireless networks similar to how Windows XP does?

Thanks.
