Submersion : Thinktank Revision 2.0

It's not often welding is a part of a case 'mod' :D

---

I can now do yah one better.

Basic steel forging :

---- Finished pump mount ;

:D

*giggles like a little girl*

This really has to be one of the coolest mods ever, simply because it's so... different :D

*wonders what'll be next*

Thx everyone !

----

Took a grinder-powered-wire-brush to the keg ;

tt2_374.jpg

-----

The pump enclosure is being fabricated , once it's done I can start plumbing for the first liquid tests......

:D

*claps hands excitedly*

Oh~ plumbing :D

Good luck ;)

Look at those poor neglected golf clubs on the back wall! They are screaming out "use me, use me"...

no, theyre saying "sell me on ebay so you can buy more fun stuff!"

Its people like you that give me the energy to just annodize and make simple modifications (that usually never get finished). How you do it is beyond me. However this has got to be the most ambitisous cooling project i have ever seen.
Maybe I missed it but where/how did you charge the window panels with nitrogen? It is a great idea and should help with keeping all that cooling energy in the case.
Very cool keep it up.

hehe

Thx !

How do I do it? well...it's a 2 year project so far....that helps....

Hey they're not neglected at all....I am full on spending too much cash on golf already.(for a hack)

:p

--------

I'm in the process of wiring/plumbing......more pics soon.

:D

More More More!!!! Subscribed because you have very much so sparked my interest, mainly because your case mod involves a keg, but also because I would like to see the finished product and how well it will OC!

See the two right angle connectors at the top ?

tt2_250.jpg

-----

Those allow me to fill the space between the inner and outer glass layers at will , with whatever gas.....

:D

:D

Waits for them to be filled with SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride) gas.

Heheh....... :D

------

Vacuum Dewar finished ; 2 pieces ,

tt2_397.jpg

-----

silicone sealed.....I am using the air pump to inject moist air into the space between the tanks....there's also a 'vent' hole to allow silicone cure by-products out......

tt2_398.jpg

Vacuum tank test in a week mebbie....

:D

Ok....

Both kegs are finished ;

a.k.a. the fast-flow-solvent-recovery-tank and the vacuum Dewar....

I have gotten them relabled at Wildrose brewery...

Here's a shot of the kegs and some of my friends at wildrose ;

tt2_406.jpg

That shot is from inside the brewery.

Left to right :

Andrew , aka 'level 80 beer slinging paladin' , Darin 'King shit of turd mountain' , myself (holding the big keg) , Mike 'The owner' (seated) and Ryan , taproom manager.....

I'd also like to thank Nick from Wildrose for the stencil work , and Tina from Wildrose for taking the pic !

-----

I'm just doing the last seal on the tank proper.....liquid tests coming soon !

:D

Looks like you can barely hold that keg in the picture ;)

Making nice progress, keep it up :D

I believe he is leaning up again the table behind him since one foot is on top of the other, could be wrong though.

Yeah, he might also be in the process of falling backwards :D

hehe , no had'nt had THAT many beers.... :D

I'm actually kinda sitting on the corner of the table.

-------

I put the very last coat of silicone onto the thinktank proper last night....last of about 25 ...

I should be doing water seal tests this weekend !

Thx !

....Aha , not likely.....my projects are all beer fueled.

:D

-------------

The water test of the thinktank 2 'glass tank' is underway :

tt2_410.jpg

-----

So far so good.No seals are leaking......I'll leave it overnight.

Operational capacity is 16.5 Liters.

----

So the next test for this tank is , of course , to see if it'll still do it @ -70 c ish when it's full of Isopropanol.

More stuff to do before then tho....

:D

Awesome......tank passed the leak test.

quick pic :

tt2_411.jpg

----------

I'm setting up the full cooling system water test now......

:D

I'm half done the setup for the loop test.

I've also tested out the Dewar.....It totally holds vacuum !!!!!

----

tt2_413.jpg

----

It's holding -20mm HG there.......

It's a long way from [H]ard vacuum , but not bad for my first try.

:D

Thx !

Circulation test is complete !!

My math is apparently pretty good......The calculated level was 3/8" to 1/2" from notch depth.....

tt2_430.jpg

It's 1/4" to 3/8" so thats pretty good.

---------

No leaks anywhere that matter :

---------

Please don't link that.Come here and view it.

------

:D

-----

Next : final teardown , cleaning and reassembly.

:D

I don't know what's more awesome: what you're attempting to do, or that it's basically made from a beer keg. :D

Thx ! beer keg was a natural choice.

:D

-----

I have my coolant :

edit :

I almost forgot , The thinktank 2 will run for the first time in 28 days......july 31.

=D

Insane! Insane! This project belongs in the extreme section, next to defusing IED's and sculpting with C4. Looking forward to 31 July. If reports of Canada dissappearing surface, I'll know who's responsible. LOL! Great work!

Ah ye of little faith.

:p

Are you sure this is going to work? :p

No I am not.

That's what 'expanding knowledge' is all about. This has never been done before , so who knows.....It won't explode or anything like that , but there's ten other ways it could just 'not work'...

we're gonna find out !

:D

Heheh......I actually do know what it tastes like.

I have a friend who's one of those 'crazy-drinkin-buddies' who actually did a shot of 99% Iso.....he made such a face , I had to know , so I tasted like 2 drops.....Take my word for it , you don't wanna know.

It's about 50 times worse than pure anhydrous ethanol....ick.

:D

At 99% I don't think it takes much to poison yourself... so as a warning to those feeling adventurous: don't go drinking this stuff lest you become the next Darwin Award winner :p

Did your friend experience any after effects, BrainEater? :)

*doesn't drink regular alcoholic drinks already due to the horrific taste of alcohol*

Well my concern was for the rubbing alcohol frying the equipment. I have seen it kill stuff in my days of electronics engineering at the college. Sure we used to clean off the flux etc on the PCB, but we always made sure it was dry before turning on the DC. :p

Ahh I see......

Yes in fact a computer will run in 99% Iso......I've done it before :

-----

That rig quit at -52 c , but worked just fine again once it warmed up.

Nothing more than the hangover he had already earned by the time he tried the iso.

:D
