What to get for 1920x1200 gaming?

Your decision just got easier...

HIS Hightech H489F1GP Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card
$249.99 - $25.00IR - $25.00MIR - $10.00 promo code "HARDOCPVGA5261" = $189.99 with free shipping
Promo Expires on 6/1/09

I got the 275 because of reward zone coupons I had that made it cheap. But at 189.99 with free cheaping, that is a steal. Seeing this deal makes me wish i could take my 275 back. I'm playing at 1920X1080 and needed a card for now until the next gen DX11 cards.

I really dont understand these "what card to get" threads especially from people that have been on here for years and clearly understand comps. can people not look at dozens of reviews and make this decision for themselves? everyones opinion will be different. one person will say a card is overkill while another will say that same card isnt enough. some people want 60fps with 16xAA and others couldnt care less about most iq settings or getting over 30fps. to me its simple...just look at reviews and decide for yourself based on your own games, iq preferences, power and noise concerns.

because reviews are only part of it. the 9800GX reviewed fairly well but really it played like crap. the 4850X2 reviewed awesomely, it didn't shine as well in the H real world testing though. there is nothing wrong with getting feedback from users. I agree that everyone opinion will differ but really I would rather get the "feel" of how a product is being received from a board like this then a half dozen review sites

at this point sli "down the road" would be silly. either do it now or dont do it at all. 4-6 months we will have new flagship with new features and technology. adding another gtx285 at that time would likely get you worse performance then that single high end card plus you wouldnt have things like DX11. adding another card down the word is usually not a good upgrade path and its certainly not when a completely new architecture with new DX will be out around that time.

I agree with this. Reviews for the most part. take a numbers angle and tend to have the most up to date hardware to test these cards with. Nothing wrong with that, they want to really see a card's potential. BUT, it is important to see how other people feel about these cards in various systems to give you a better idea on whether you indeed want one card over another, or whether you want to run a single card, or sli/xfire. I tend to google it and see what hits I get on different forums, this way I can see if someone else already asked the question.

I admit "down the road" was a poor choice of words and I should of used ASAP instead. Another thing, he didn't mention anything about future upgrades to the next gen, he only mentioned possibility going SLI.

On the next gen cards, do we know if their high end version will completely blow 285 SLI out of the water & be relatively cheaper than both of them? On DX11, will every gaming company start producing DX11 games by the time the next gen card is released? DX10 is out but some companies still produce DX9 games.

I could of stuck with my 260 SLI and waited for the next gen cards to come out, but I didn't. I wanted the best single GPU card solution from EVGA and went with a 285 FTW with an option to go SLI. I'm happy with the choice I made.

It's all a matter of opinion and its up to the OP on which way to go.

I've got an ATI Radeon HD4890 and I am happy with it for 1920x1200 gaming.

Look at me sig? I get about 60fps on most games such as cod4 with all settings on highest..

I disagree. "Down the road" the new single high end card will easily cost twice what the gtx 285 does at that time. And IF he has the PSU to pull it off, I would suggest using a 285 now and adding another one when he starts playing something thats stresses it. Two gtx 285's in SLI are a formidable graphics solution and will continue to be in the future. Even now 8800 ultras in SLI handle most things very well and look how long they have been out (2 years).

so what? it would be smarter to sell the gtx285 at the time and get a new card. the next gen isnt just a small change like the gtx280 was compared to the 8800gtx. this is supposedly a completely new architecture that will support things like DX11. also the gtx285 will likely be discontinued before it drops much more in price. that happens quite often as even back when the 8800gtx came out the 7900gtx cards were still fairly high priced.

I'm currently running an HD4870 / 1GB at 1920x1200, it does fine! ... for one display. The drivers are the issue in this instance..

That is so strange, I have always heard problems about dual+ displays w/ ATI cards, yet have never had any issue.

Since day one with my 4870 1GB I have plugged both a 24" and 20" monitor into it w/o any issue whatsoever...

Even w/ diff resolutions (1920x1200 vs 1680x1050) there have no issues.

Oh, and I would recommend the 4890 as my 4870 seems to be more than enough for 1920x1200, so a 4890 should last you even longer.
Edit: nice price on your hd4890, you will enjoy it!

And this helps the OP how? Your little 8800gt and quad will choke on new games at 1900x1200 (and there is no point even arguing this point).

My BFG GTX280OC was getting over 200fps (with vsync off of course)((before it died)) in L4D at 1920x1080 with everything maxed. Even with cresendo events, it never dropped below 150fps. Hope this helps....

never below 150fps maxed at 1920? thats total BS and you know it.

here even an i7 and gtx280 doesnt even average but 133 at just 1680x1050 with no AA or AF. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?b=48

here a gtx280 even at just 1680x1050 and this time with 4xAA knocks out just 93 fps http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3501&p=7

that sure must be one special gtx280 that can get a higher minimum framerate at 1920 then all the others can even average at 1680.

I suggest you pick up 2 evga gtx 260 c216 55nm , overclock and sli them. I'm running a pair of these with an [email protected] on a 1920x1200 display and they are fantastic. I broke 20k in 3dmark vantage and thats with a puny c2d! You can get 2 of these for like 300 bucks now and it beats a single gtx 285 , rivals a 295. At least for nvidia it seems to me like the most cost effective option.

he already ordered a 4890.

I use a T260 at 1920x1200 with a BFG GTX260 Maxcore. The only game Ive played that even thought about dropping the fps was Far Cry 2. But it is playable maxed.

It would make sense if you can find a 2nd hand card at a large discount IMO. Granted this would make it very much a crap shot.

I play cod4 and tf2 and crysis at 1920 x 1200 with no prob well not crysis. Why are we worried about dx11?Have we truly seen anything worth a shit in dx10?

please not that tired old argument. the 8800gtx kicked ass in DX9 as well as DX10. you didnt have to play a DX10 game or have Vista to enjoy the 8800gtx now did you? DX11 is only part of the equation of the upcoming newer cards.

4890 is certainly a great choice. Probably the best price/performance card out there. If I hadn't gotten a very good deal for my GTX 285, I certainly would've gone with the 4890 myself. Enjoy! :)

I think your going to be happy with that 4890. Thats a heck of deal. I like nvidia a little better than ATI but I would have jumped on this deal.

?eh? what are you talking about? PLp keep saying dx11 this and that.Shit Im still waiting to see dx10 content worth a shit ie:I spent the money for a dx10 card but found no greater joy because of it.Sell me a card that I can play at 1920 x1200 maxed out online with a steady 60fps then Id be happy.Even though I play cod4 id perfer 125 fps but lets get real.

Just because very little was done with Direct X 10 in games does not mean that something more profound will not be done with Direct X 11.

Funny thing is thats what they said about dx10.Hey, I love hardware If I didnt have kids Id probobaly be buried in it right now.Id be happy with better games than a card.

I was saying dont really worry if DX11 is great or not. buy this next gen stuff because its powerful and delivers a better gaming experience. most people that bought 8800gtx didnt give a rats behind about DX10. the 8800gtx was vastly superior to the 7900gtx and DX10 was just simply a bonus if you had Vista and wanted to use it.

Whether Direct X 11 gets used by future games really isn't the point. The newer cards that are Direct X 11 capable will also support previous versions of Direct X at faster speeds than current DX10 hardware can today.
