What the best Directx10 video card that produces the least heat? I have a first generation ATi 4850 that crashes even with the fan on 100% because it gets so hot. Air flow in my case in pretty good but this thing is just crazy hot.

yeah the 4770 isnt far behind the 4850 while using much less power and running cooler. OP I sure hope that HD in your sig isnt the only one you have.

It is, but I forgot to update it.

Also, how is your GTX 260?
technically the gtx260 uses much more power but its cooling solution is very effective. it idles in the mid 40s and rarely gets much over 70 during intense gaming. unless I manually adjust it the fan always stays at stock 40% setting even under full load and its probably the quietest card I have owned.

160gb hd is still really small so how do you get all your stuff on there? I only have 110gb free on my 640gb hd and I dont have anything but basic apps, some games and a little porn. lol

My question is how do you use up that much space with those things. I have basic aps and games and they only take up about 80 gigs. Office, 3 games (5 gigs each), a few more basic apps (1 or 2 gigs each), and Vista Ultimate. That just doesn't add up to 500+ gigs.

used to be 500gb+ i've been deleting stuff as well and if you store good/great movies/anime/documentaries/top gear space fills up.

surely you arent calling your 160gb hd large are you? 160gb is extremely small for a modern hd and is hasnt been common even in low end machines for several years. I am a gamer and some games take up quite a bit of space plus I have Vista and Widows 7. on the Widows 7 partition I only have the OS and 4 games and that took 65 gigs right there. I dont see how a modern pc user especially a gamer could get by with only a 160gb hd.

I'm not calling it large at all. I'm just calling it enough for a few games/ applications (e.g. Office)/ browsing.

I guess I don't download movies or music so maybe that's where I'm saving all the space. One observation I've made is that people who watch Anime download a crap load of it.

I dont have any music or movies either. I probably dont have any more games than the average gamer and in fact I dont even have all of them installed. just Strangelhold, BS Area 51, Fallout 3, Crysis, Warhead, Riddick AoDA, Mirrors Edge, and Dead Space are 70 gigs right there. with an OS and 10 modern games your hd would be more than half full.

Yeah, so where are the other 450+ gigs is my question? An operating system does take more than a big game.

I was just giving an example of a few games I have. do you want me to list every bit of porn, games and apps I have? also remember I have 7 and Vista 64. remember to that a hd is actually much smaller than its advertised size. 10 modern games and an os would wipe out more than half of your 160gb hd so I still dont get why you bought such a small one.

Three words: Akasa Neo Vortex :) Puts that nasty heat outside the case and in my case my idle on my HD 4850 is now @ 39* C vs 72* C with the fan at a still quiet 2500rpm and my load is only 70 - 71* C vs 89* C :) @ 1500 RPM this thing is dead silent and my temps are only 2 - 3* C warmer which is still great.

If you do get the Akasa you need to cut the VRM part of your stock heatsink off and leave it on the card or you need to get some sinks to put on the vrm's and such. I went with a ZEROtherm ZH100 kit as I didn't want to cut up my stock heatsink just in case :)

i love my sapphire 4670 gddr4 version

its all i need for my gaming needs (tf2 and dota) and the best part: its running at 34 deg C at 34% fan speed all the time, auto clocks down in 2d mode, and no need for extra power

also, its on sale at newegg right for an awesome price... i overpaid for mine:

It did wipe half of my HD but with everything I need on it, I still have half left so whats the problem?

I dont know what else to say to you. I was just showing you that only a few modern games and your OS will use half of your 160gb hd. if thats acceptable to you then so be it. most people on these forums could never make it with just a 160gb hd.

Why does it matter to you how much hard drive space he has? There is no rule that you must have >50% free space. There is just no point in that. If you only like using half your space, that is fine. He chooses not to go to the extreme.

well what does what I am saying to him matter to you? taking a comment out of context for a conversion that doesnt involve you is kinda silly. I never said he needed 50% of free space on a hd. the point I was making to him was that surely he will want more games and such on his hd and only 160gb that doesnt allow much room.

why not just spend 30 bux on a decent cooler for that card rather than spending over 100 on another card you won't know for sure will suit you?

do people really not swap out the vidcard cooler? I always do, or at the very least I take it off make sure it has good contact and then reapply some thermal grease to it.

if it is that hot it sounds like you aren't getting good contact with the heatsink as it is

You seem way too worried that his small hard drive won't hold enough porn and, actually, that's kinda freaky.

this thread really took an odd turn.

people on the internet are weird, pretty much across the board I am realizing.

why would you say that since I never said one thing to him about his hd being too small to hold enough porn? looking back through the thread I believe porn was mentioned once followed by an "lol" in this comment right here. other than that I talked about games and apps in all the other posts while discussing his hard drive.

besides the somewhat ridiculous comment by evilsofa where did this thread take an odd turn and who is acting weird?

I don't know.

one dude told another dude he had a small hard drive and then the guy with the small hard drive got a little defensive at the insinuation.

I don't know man, if another man told me my hard drive was too small I am pretty sure I would get wierded out too.

god help me if my girlfriend told me my hard drive was too small, I don't think I could handle that.

well that sounds like the weirdness is coming from you then. lol. he had an 80gb hd listed in his sig which seemed out of place so I questioned him. he then said he upgraded to a 160gb hd which still seemed kinda of small for a modern pc so we commented back and forth on that. nothing weird about that.

he seemed a little touchy about his small hard drive then the next thing I saw was two or three random people telling you the size of his hard drive was none of your business as though you had wronged him.

I suspect the guys that questioned you may have the smallest hard drives of all.

and yes I am being the weirdest person in this thread.

that is a very large hard drive you got there...

I guess I just didnt notice all that. lol.

Dont you hate it when you walk into a room full of guys comparing hard drive size :p

Anyway... why the heck did your 4850 overheat at 100% fan?? That sounds more like a fault in that particular card rather than 4850s in general. Unless you have some crazily poor airflow in your case, overheating should not be a problem when running at 100% fan speed.

Guys, there are 2 rules you should always obey on [H]ardforum: never comment on the size of a man's hard drive, or discuss the length of his gpu... :p

OP: Does this problem only occur when you're stressing the gpu (such as when gaming)? Any idea what your gpu temp is when it crashes? I suggest testing to see if heat really is the problem. You can do this by taking the side panel off of your case and directing a box fan on your gpu to see if that takes care of your problem. If it does, then I would suggest either taking the stock cooler off and re-applying some decent thermal grease on the gpu, or do what others have suggested and get an aftermarket cooler. It also could be that your card is already damaged from overheating prior to you turning the fan to 100%.

I used a 60GB drive for year's just fine. It's aN absurd assumption to think that everyone has 5-10 or more game's installed.

I'd consider myself an average gamer and I only have 2-3 games that take up together around 20gb's...plenty of room for anything else in a 160gb. I may install a game, play for a while, then uninstall once I'm done with it. No reason to waste space if I'm not going to use it again.

risqu3- if you're having that much trouble figuring out where it's all going just go download a hard drive mapper, something like SpaceMonger should work.

The best is any gtx200 variant with accelero extreme coolers... they load at 50ish... amazing!

Would all this facination about another guys hard drive size make you Dual Boot/Curious?

Idon't see why there's issue about it, I have two 80GB Hard drives in RAID 0 configuration = 160GB, I have Office 2007, 3 installed games (Velvet Assassin, Cryostasis and Wanted Weapons of Fate), lots of programs like Nero 9 Ultra, WinAVI, 30GB of music and some crap in the temp folder and It doesn't exceed the 90GB threshold, as soon as I download a game or a movie, I burn it into a DVD, I just don't trust in the hard drives reliability, specially in RAID 0 Mode and that the SMART report can't be seen in RAID mode.

well I install my games and just leave them there unless they really suck. also I have lots of mods and such that would be a pain in the butt to install every time I felt like playing. its 2009 and I just dont see the point in buying a relatively tiny 160gb hd anymore if you game or do anything else besides surf the web and send email. the cost difference is very minimal to double or triple that capacity. that gives the person much more room for future storage needs too without the need to upgrade during the typical hd life span.

I know its dragging this horrendously derailed thread even further off track (sorry for that) but there's more to HD size than just the capacity. A bigger drive is usually cheaper per GB and due to the sheer density of the data, will often have a higher transfer speed too.

For example, the 1.5TB drive I just got, gets 100-60 Mb/s from spindle to edge in Sandra. In comparison the 250gb disk it replaced got 60-30. (I've not looked into it, but I'd expect the 1TB version has the same density platters, just less of them, so its likely the same speed)

Of course, if you've got a perfectly adequate disk setup, that's no reason to change it, but its worth bearing in mind when choosing an upgrade or replacement.

1.5 TB is significantly more space than I'm likely to need for a long time, but its 3x the space of the 500gb I was planning on getting, for the same price i was expecting to pay before I actualy looked at current pricing (and only around 2x the price of a 500)

and if it's porn anime then they are quite literally pasted to it, lol. :)

lol that's gross.

Though I must say that I've gotten to the point that I've been more hoarding anime and not actually getting around to watching it. *Decides not to join in the "screencap 1upping game" and derail the thread even further*

errmmm, on topic: my 4850 singleslot is a nifty spaceheater.
