Best racing game on Steam at the moment?

At the moment the best "sim" racers dont have the graphical pleasantness of Codemaster's Ego Engine (Grid/Dirt). Most of the development has gone under the hood. Grid is somewhat between a "sim" and an "arcade" racer imo somewhere around a 40/60 mix of "sim/arcade". Their cars drive differently and wear and tear affect performance. When I got the demo, it took me a while to get used to it and when I started playing other people who havent played it, I would just stop and look at them in my rear view, hoping they would eventually get off the grass and in the right direction.

The only racing game I know of that has a next gen graphic engine and is targeted at as a sim is the Formula One game Codemasters is working on, tentatively dated for sometime in 2010.

Meh. I was actually playing GRID today, but IMO the sim/arcade mix is probably closer to 20/80 or maybe even more... I say that because there are absolutely no options for settings on cars, nothing to customize or tweak.

Also, cars don't drive much like they should. I'm not even talking about the feel of the car, but the speeds of the cars and how they drive. I was doing a drifting competition in an RX-7, and I didn't have to shift to 2nd gear until 90 km/h... not only that, I could pop it up to 3rd gear, spin out to a completely stop, then stomp the pedal while still in 3rd and spin out like crazy. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me...

Despite all that though, it's a pretty fun game and I enjoy it.

I think that's one of the issues I've run into.

It's like some of the "sim" guys get so hung up in the number crunching that they forget an awful lot of ACTUAL RACING is in WHAT YOU CAN SEE.

And that's why the "100% sim" games...but ancient games...like Richard Burns just don't do it for me. I'm sure the physics are dead on, but it doesn't look anything like actually being on a track. Visibility is WAY the hell too good, and that just comes from an older graphics engine.

GRID/DiRT really nail it as far as what you can see, and the damage model on them is unbelievable. It's just so frustrating that the way the car handles feels so...off.

I think iRacing is the best Sim out there. It looks great and has amazing physics. But if you arent going to be competitive in a series or two and try to upgrade licenses, its probably not worth the cost.

Dirt is a great game. I played it for countless hours.
I remember on one map I finished the race and all of a sudden my eyes were watering so badly. I hadn't realised it but I hadn't blinked for the whole race and my contacts kept me from noticing it while I was concentrating on getting through without a single bit of damage. The GFX are some of the best I have ever seen.

How is Need for Speed Undercover?
As good a underground 2 or as bad a carbon?

underground 2 was bad.... the first underground was way better IMO.

ACTUAL racing is 99% design, manufacture and tuning. But that said, in a racing sim, I prefer the driving to screwing around with all the other stuff, but thats probably because I've pulled far too many all nighters trying to get a car ready for the track :p

Ahh...yeah, for 'track' racing, that's true. I keep forgetting that the racing I'm into isn't the entire sport. :p

For rally and 'street' racing, manufacture and tuning matters (of course), but the better driver is the one who pays attention more to his environment.

Anyway, I picked up Test Drive Unlimited cheap (not Steam I know) and have been enjoying it so far outside a couple of small bugs that piss me off.

I saw a YouTube video of this game, and it sold me. Really fun game, even my GF was playing for a bit on my wheel with a huge smile on her face. She normally dislikes games minus Sims series. :c)

I can't wait for Dirt 2 guys, coming this September! Suppose to have MUCH better multiplayer support.

rfactor people :p

I have... it's not on Steam. As the OP was asking for.

It's a good base, but annoying to have to download gigs upon gigs of mods to be able to get into even half of the multiplayer games.... and a burden to say the least. It's great if you get it right though, especially after all the realfeel FFB stuff as well...
