Oh, just mentioning one final thing: Opinions are like assholes, everyone has them, everyone thinks everyone else's stinks.

Any smart person can have an opinion you call dumb, how does that change their actual intelligence?

My opinion of you guys is your scum who steals without caring what happens. How does that change my ability to process math and physics?

You kiddies need to learn this wonderful thing called 'opnions' if you want to pass 6th grade.
 
I will also remind all of you children that some of the worst opinions in the world were also made by highly intelligen peoples (Nazis, anyone?)

in great part i agree with him.

you get on the internet and you want what you want and you want it now. ok thats fine. and you want it free. ok thats fine too but that doesnt mean you should get it.

so youre a business. you sell things. lets say you sell movies. ppl want them. theres a demand. so you make them for the market. the market wants to be able to see them where they want when they want how they want and hopefully for free.

so you set things up for them to see them in theaters. you set things up so they can see them on your tv - you can rent from a store or rent from tv or rent from netflix. you set things up so you can rent them from amazon or rent them from itunes. or you can buy them from amazon or itunes or the store and own it.

they'd like to make it so you can play it anywhere you want but guess what happens as soon as they do that? it gets bought by one person and then given to 1000 others. so instead of selling it for a price that would keep your business afloat - a price that 1000 people would have paid for - you sell it for more to try and make up the loss of those 999 people not buying it.

you hate drm? well you figure out a way to keep ppl from stealing.

i hate it too. i hate how i cant just buy a movie and play it on anything i want or make a backup copy of it in case something happens. i hate how much things cost. and why is all this so? because too many ppl just like who he was talking about are out there wanting what they want immediately and not wanting to pay for it and NOT paying for it.

i say get rid of drm and lower the prices of everything. movies are 5 bucks now instead of 15 or 20. games are 30 isntead of 50. take a little less of the pie if your an upper level admin or a start. i dont know. they could argue they deserve to get as much as they can. that they deserve to charge as much as the market will bare.

long post. sorry. but i can see his point. we'll sell to you on the internet so you get what you want and we get what we want but dont steal our stuff. if you do we'll do the best we can to keep you from doing that and we'll raise the prices to make up the difference as best we can in our losses.

think of it this way. think of a real store. you walk in. browse. find something you want. see the price. good deal. so you goto checkout and buy it. someone else does the same thing. and someone else. as a business youre making money and the customer is getting what they want. win win.

now think of the internet. its a store too. you walk in. browse. find something you want. see the price. good deal. so you goto checkout and buy it - download i. and then you set up your own store and let everyone else who wants to download it do it for free. pretty soon you have ppl going online and not even going to the stores that sell the original products. no they go to the other "stores" where they can get a copy of the product for free.

This just shows how out of touch Sony has been, in every market segment, for years. From all the stupid comments from Kutaragi on the Playstation to the audio division and their root kits, to the film industry. I hope they all die.

No, but most schools with business degrees would try to install ethics in their business students. If you need to insult anyone just because they have morals, you may need to insult more then half the world.

Wish I could say that was the case...

Let's take Forrest Gump for example. Whether or not you thought the movie was schlocky... It was a fairly well made film and did well at the box office.

$329,694,499 domestic take, $347,693,217 foreign take for a total of $677,387,716 worldwide. (Box Office Mojo) Its production budget was $55 million. None of these figures have been adjusted for inflation. This does not include rentals.

Now, a movie that does this well... a second book HAS been written, but why has there been no sequel?

For the film that was made, he agreed to a net points deal, a percentage of the profit on the release. He has received nothing. The film, according to the bigwigs, has yet to turn a profit.

He has refused to sell the screenplay rights to the novel's sequel, stating that he "cannot in good conscience allow money to be wasted on a failure".

A bit of a different issue altogether, but still needs to be point out. Just because of the way the system is set up, a hugely successful film doesn't mean it will go on the books as making a profit.

My reference on 'script kiddies' is because of the fact most pirates don't create their own stuff, they just use what is already out, which in all honesty, makes you just like a script kiddie.

And sorry to say, but I do know what goes on on torrents. Very few actually make the stuff that millions pirate.

Lets make something clear guys. Why I've given on these topics is my moral opinion.

It's one thing if you disagree. It's one thing if you attack my opinion. But attacking my intelligence just because you don't like my opinion really shows that you guys are children throwing a tempur tamtrum.

I've tried to be nice about the intelligence attacks, but it's getting fucking old. Try to stay within discussion, and leave the personal attacks somewhere else. Or I will be showing you how intelligent I am and you will end up with your foot in your mouth.

You're also making sweeping (and no doubt inaccurate) generalizations about the people on this forum. Seems like you've got a chip on your shoulder, or a lot of anger for some reason. Have you read those quotes from the Sony exec? Claiming that nothing good has ever come from the internet, and that it's only used for piracy is a laughably false claim. I don't care who you are, making a claim like that will draw some well deserved flack. I'm not sure why you're so up in arms about that.

A last note, unless you're a genius of some sort, repeated proclamations of intellectual superiority are rather bizarre and hard to take seriously. Since none of us knows you in person, your intelligence cannot be proven satisfactorily to anyone here, and therefore your repeated offers for a "battle of the brains" has no place here.

If you're going to continue posting, try to chill out a bit. No one's looking to start a flame war.

If you're done ranting now,it's obvious you've completely ignored the main point of discussion in order to start a flame war.Sony's CEO saying no good has come from the Internet is an idiotic and self serving statement,and deserves blasting.And intelligence is useless without maturity.

First, it is obvious the man was speaking from a perspective of people stealing people's property online, and a large number of people think it's okay, it's what the internet is for.

Secondly, you're the only person using profanity and personal insults to try and start a flame war. Relax. This guy believes "nothing good has come from the internet" and by disagreeing with him that doesn't automatically infer that anyone is a pirate. You're focusing on that last part as opposed to everything he said as a whole.

But yeah, he's completely wrong. The internet has provided us access to information that we never would have been able to get 10 years ago. If I want to know anything about a movie, sports team, genetic research, how to tie a knot, or how to make an omelet I can go look it up now. I'm sure all the publishers for "how to tie a knot" books freaked out at the thought of "those damn pirates wanting to get everything for free!"

We pay our ISPs monthly for access to that information. If you agree with the guy then maybe you should just hop of the internet and these forums for good. The very fact that we're here talking about these ideas and how they affect us is evident that the internet has done a lot of good by connecting users around the world.
 
My theory is that most people didn't want to buy music in the first place and now that it is available for free, they realize how silly was to pay $15 dollars for each album.

Anyway, all this talk about profits, illegal downloading, etc., is all about the producers and the distributors; musicians have been screwed by them from the very beginning. And when it comes to movies: small/independent movies have always struggled with revenue and the big ones have been making the same stories with the same plots with the same actors over and over, and they expect to win more money by just doing that.

Moral or not, the current scheme invites people not to pay for entertainment, especially when everything is made for a profit now, from water to expensive hospital services, where, no matter what, the customer is always the one getting screwed.

Do you want to check out this tv series without the constrains of tv programming? Alright, just buy this overpriced set where you have to buy the whole season, just to realize it was crap. Thank you and goodbye.

Actually, how you express yourself in your native tongue is a very good indicator of intelligence. I am so sick of this, "well I can code, and I did well in math, so I can write like an illiterate and you are a grammar Nazi" bullshit. Express yourself clearly, or people will rightfully assume you are an idiot. There are people for whom English is a second or third language who write better than you, and that should embarrass you. I have absolutely no respect for anyone who writes like a retarded 8 year-old. I have a friend who is a college math prof with like a 185 IQ and he writes eloquently, with perfect grammar and diction, so don't give me the left brain, right brain bullshit. There are plenty of tech people who can write well. Maybe if you could, you would be at MIT instead of Devry, since those math SATs were apparently so high.

Intelligence is a prerequisite to the formation of an opinion. A bagel, for instance, lacks intelligence completely and is therefore unable to form opinions about its baker/production line overlords.

There is opinion and then there is well-formed opinion. These are, as seems obvious, wholly different things.
